Overview
An Ebola outbreak was confirmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Uganda in May 2026. The Bundibugyo species of Ebola involved is one for which there is no vaccine or specific treatment, though work is ongoing to test promising candidates. The outbreak is occurring in a challenging context: humanitarian crisis and a remote and densely populated area, combined with insecurity and high population and trade movements. WHO is scaling up support to the governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, strengthening surveillance, contact tracing, clinical preparedness and management, delivery of supplies and community engagement, and cross-border preparedness. Community engagement will be key. It is only when communities are engaged in the response that such outbreaks are brought under control.

On 5 May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) was alerted of a high-mortality outbreak of unknown illness in Mongbwalu Health Zone, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), including deaths among health workers.
On 14 May 2026, the Institut national de recherche biomédicale (INRB) Kinshasa analyzed 13 blood samples from Rwampara Health Zone, Ituri Province. Laboratory analysis confirmed Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) in eight of these samples on 15 May, a species of Ebola.

As of 27 May, a total of 906 suspected cases and 223 deaths among suspected cases have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As of 29 May, a total of 134 confirmed cases, including nine in Uganda, with 18 deaths among the confirmed cases, have been reported across both countries. This is an additional 49 confirmed cases, eight confirmed deaths, 160 suspected cases and 47 suspected deaths since the last update on 21 May. The current Ebola outbreak in Central Africa is not another distant public health headline. It is a test of whether the world has learned the lessons of 2014–2016: act early, fund the basics, protect health workers, and move science fast enough to matter.
This outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola for which there is still no licensed vaccine or approved treatment. The newest DRC public health updatereports550 cumulative confirmed cases, 101 deaths among confirmed cases, 309 patients in isolation or hospitalization, and 19 cumulative recoveries, yielding an overall case-fatality rate of 18.4%. The virus strain involved, called “Bundibugyo”, is unusual in that there is no available treatment or vaccine, unlike the “Zaire ebolavirus” strain, the most virulent, which was responsible for most of the previous epidemics.
