Ebola outbreak - DRC 2026 - World Health Organization (WHO)
Ebola outbreak - DRC 2026 - World Health Organization (WHO) The Democratic Republic of the Congo, 2026 Overview An Ebola outbreak was confirmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in Uganda in May 2026. The Bundibugyo species of Ebola involved is one for which there is no vaccine or specific treatment, though work is ongoing to test promising candidates. The outbreak is occurring in a challenging context: humanitarian crisis and a remote and densely populated area, combined with insecurity and high population and trade movements. WHO is scaling up support to the governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, strengthening surveillance, contact tracing, clinical preparedness and management, delivery of supplies and community engagement, and cross-border preparedness. Community engagement will be key. It is only when communities are engaged in the response that such outbreaks are brought under control. WHO adds first diagnostic test for Ebola Bundibugyo virus to its Emergency Use Listing Patient enrolment begins in a scientific trial to identify the first effective treatments for Bundibugyo virus disease WHO issues comprehensive guidelines on filovirus…

Muslims in DR Congo's Bunia mark Eid under Ebola restrictions Muslims in the eastern Congolese city of Bunia marked Eid on May 27, under strict hygiene measures, with worshippers wearing masks, using hand sanitiser and praying in smaller gatherings as authorities sought to curb the spread of Ebola. The celebrations come as the Democratic Republic of Congo battles a worsening outbreak that the World Health Organization says includes more than 900 suspected cases, at least 101 confirmed infections and around 220 suspected deaths across Congo and neighbouring Uganda. The outbreak, centred in Ituri province where Bunia is located, involves the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine.

Ebola's Warning Shot: The Bundibugyo Outbreak Is Moving Faster Than the ... Published June 10, 2026 By Syra Madad, D.H.Sc., M.Sc., MCP, CHEP The current Ebola outbreak in Central Africa is not another distant public health headline. It is a test of whether the world has learned the lessons of 2014–2016: act early, fund the basics, protect health workers, and move science fast enough to matter. This outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus disease, a form of Ebola for which there is still no licensed vaccine or approved treatment. The newest DRC public health updatereports550 cumulative confirmed cases, 101 deaths among confirmed cases, 309 patients in isolation or hospitalization, and 19 cumulative recoveries, yielding an overall case-fatality rate of 18.4%. The numbers are moving quickly, and they likely underestimate the true toll because some earlier deaths remain under investigation. The epicenter remains Ituri Province in northeastern DRC, but cases have spread across Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, with Uganda reporting imported and linked secondary cases in Kampala and Wakiso. This is not only a rural outbreak. It is unfolding along corridors of insecurity, mining-linke…

The current Ebola outbreak is a public health emergency of international ... Download PDF The Ebola outbreak reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on 5 th May is now believed to have resulted in 139 deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The current outbreak is of particular concern due to the high fatality rate of the causal Bundibugyo strain, its spread into neighboring Uganda, and the absence of an approved vaccine or targeted treatments. Following the WHO’s declaration on 17 th May that the outbreak constitutes a public health emergency of international concern 1 , we outline the urgent need for sustained research into diagnostic tools, life-saving vaccines, and antiviral therapies directed against this virus. The Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) is distinct from the Zaire Ebola virus strain, which has been responsible for the majority of documented outbreaks, including the 2014–2016 West African epidemic that resulted in more than 28,000 cases and a fatality rate of 63% 2 . In contrast, BDBV has demonstrated lower viral replication compared to the Zaire strain 3 , a comparatively lower fatality rate of 30–50%, and has previously been associated with only two Ebola outbr…

Ebola - Statistics & Facts | Statista
Ebola - Statistics & Facts | Statista Health, Pharma & Medtech › State of Health Ebola - Statistics & Facts As of May 17 2026, a new Ebola outbreak in the eastern DRC has been declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) after spreading across the border to Uganda. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or targeted treatment is currently available, though supportive care remains critical. As of June 9, around 654 confirmed cases and close to 129 confirmed deaths had been reported, with most cases taking place in the DRC . Out of the total, 16 cases and one death took place in Uganda. The Ebola virus disease (EVD) The Ebola virus disease (EVD) was first discovered in Zaire, today the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 1976. The virus takes its name from the Ebola river as the first cases of the virus were reported in an area along this river. Around the same time, the Ebola disease was also identified in parts of Sudan (in what is today South Sudan). These first two known outbreaks caused 318 cases and 280 deaths in Zaire, and 284 cases and 151 deaths in Sudan. Thus, the Zaire Ebola virus showed a significantly higher fat…

Bundibugyo Ebola Strain Sparks International Concern
Bundibugyo Ebola Strain Sparks International Concern Ebola crisis: a new strain with no vaccine or treatment 3 min. 20/05/2026 Caption Ebola virus protection equipment, training session in Kinshasa © WHO-Eugene-Kabambi Share Facebook X WhatsApp Email Print Ebola is far from new in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). So why has the most recent outbreak been declared an international health emergency ? The virus strain involved, called “Bundibugyo”, is unusual in that there is no available treatment or vaccine, unlike the “Zaire ebolavirus” strain, the most virulent, which was responsible for most of the previous epidemics. While 30 confirmed cases had been recorded in Ituri as of 19 May, suspected outbreaks have also been reported in neighboring North Kivu, a region already marked by previous health and security crises. There are more than 500 suspected cases and 130 suspected deaths, stated on 19 May the head of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus . An American national has also been confirmed positive and been transferred to Germany. International concern has intensified following the confirmation of two cases in Kampala, the Ugandan capital, among travelers returning from the…
