UN warns Ebola outbreak could cost Africa up to $3.6 billion
ByAgencies
Geneva. The United Nations has warned that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Central Africa could cost the continent up to $3.6 billion and lead to the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs, raising fears of a wider economic and development crisis if containment efforts fail.
The warning comes as health authorities struggle to contain the rapidly spreading outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and neighbouring Uganda, with international agencies calling for urgent financial and logistical support.
Speaking on Tuesday, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in the DRC, Damien Mama, said the outbreak posed a threat not only to public health but also to economic growth, livelihoods and long-term development across Africa.
"If we have the resources and we step up, we can contain this outbreak and prevent further losses," Mr Mama said.
"If we do not, this health emergency risks becoming a much deeper and prolonged development crisis across the region and potentially the continent."
According to recent estimates by the World Health Org…

Congo suspends funeral wakes and big gatherings due to Ebola outbreak
BUNIA, Congo (AP) — Authorities in northeastern Congo banned funeral wakes and gatherings of more 50 people Friday in an effort to curb a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in a region where medical workers have struggled with a lack of resources and pushback from angry residents.
The World Health Organization said that the outbreak now poses a “very high” risk for Congo — up from a previous categorization of “high” — but that the risk of the disease spreading globally remains low.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said 82 cases and seven deaths have been confirmed in Congo, but that the outbreak is believed to be “much larger.”
There is no available vaccine for the Bundibugyo virus, which spread undetected for weeks in Congo’s Ituri Province following the first known death while authorities tested for another, more common, Ebola virus and came up negative. There are now 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths, though more are expected as surveillance expands.
“We are trying to catch up,” Congo Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner told the AP. “It is a race against the clock.”

Sophia Mulei, a laboratory technologist, works with a control sample inside the Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Laboratory at Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe, Uganda. The lab is one of the primary centers for the testing of Ebola samples.
Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo began worrying about possible Ebola cases in mid-April. Deaths in the northeastern part of the country that seemed like they may have been caused by the deadly virus prompted officials to take samples. They then sent them to the lab in Bunia.
"The first samples were tested on April 30th," says
Jean-Jaques Muyembe
, general director of INRB, DRC's national biomedical research center. The lab ran the samples on GeneXpert, a machine that automates the process of detecting specific bits of viral DNA. The results came back negative for Ebola. So did more samples a couple of weeks later.
Eventually, officials sent samples hundreds of miles away to Kinshasa for more speciali…

An Ebola epidemic in Africa has become a public health emergency of international concern, the
World Health Organization (WHO) announced
on Sunday (May 17).
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported more than 390 suspected Ebola cases and over 100 deaths in the outbreak,
Dr. Jean Kaseya
, the director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention,

This particular outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo virus,
one of three species of virus
known to spark large Ebola disease outbreaks. There are no licensed therapeutics or vaccines for Bundibugyo virus. However, prompt medical care to treat people's symptoms and stabilise their vitals can improve survival, according to the WHO.

How worried should you be about Ebola? | UC Berkeley Public Health
On May 15, researchers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) identified an outbreak of a rare strain of the infectious disease Ebola, which has now caused 540 documented cases of infection in the DNR and neighboring country Uganda, with 130 deaths. Experts believe the actual totals may be higher. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17.
The United States has instituted travel restrictions, banning non-U.S. citizens who have been in the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan (considered a high risk area though there have been no reports of infections in that country) in the last 21 days are barred from entering the country. Citizens who have been in the region are required to land at D.C.’s Washington-Dulles airport for a health screening.
The Centers for Disease Control is currently reporting that the “overall risk to the American public and travelers remains low.” We spoke with Infectious Diseases expert Dr.
Charles Whittaker
to discover more about the outbreak, what’s being done about it, and how worried we should be in the United States.

"Widespread transmission is very unlikely with Ebola,"

The Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has yet to reach its peak, but treatment centres are already at saturation point, with health officials warning that far greater urgency is needed to contain the virus.
Since the outbreak was first declared in May, there have been more than
1,700 confirmed cases and 580 deaths
from the Bundibugyo variant of the virus – for which there is not yet a dedicated treatment (although
trials are underway
) or a vaccine. Neighbouring Uganda has had 20 confirmed cases and two deaths.
In the DRC, contact-tracing coverage stands at around 60% of cases, leaving thousands of contacts undiscovered. That makes breaking the transmission chain all the harder, deepening fear and stigma.
The emergence of Ebola in areas marked by active conflict, displacement, and overstretched health services complicates the humanitarian response. But funding is also an issue. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) h…

CNN is tracking the locations of confirmed cases in the outbreak, as well as historical cases and deaths. This page will be updated as further details become available.
While the global risk remains low, WHO has called the outbreak a matter of “international concern.” The United States has

travel restrictions for certain travelers coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and South Sudan. Historically, nearly all Ebola outbreaks, cases and deaths have been concentrated in western and central African nations.
An outbreak last decade was the largest and most devastating in the history of the disease. WHO has warned that the current outbreak could be on track to be among one of the larger ones, given the pacing and increasing of deaths.

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo began worrying about possible Ebola cases in mid-April. Deaths in the northeastern part of the country that seemed like they may have been caused by the deadly virus prompted officials to take samples. They then sent them to the lab in Bunia.

A new UNDP assessment warns the outbreak could cost the DRC more than $1 billion, eliminate 55,000 jobs and trigger billions in economic losses across Africa, even if the virus is contained.
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) could push nearly one million more people into poverty while costing African economies billions of dollars, according to a new United Nations (UN) report.
The findings, contained in the "Rapid Socioeconomic Assessment of Ebola Outbreak in the DRC" released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), show that efforts to contain the virus, including disruptions…

There's a new outbreak of Ebola in Africa. Here's what you need to know
Médecins Sans Frontières/AP
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
has declared
a new Ebola outbreak in Kasai Province. It’s caused by the most severe strain: Zaire Ebola virus.
This outbreak
began
with a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital on August 20 and died five days later. Two health workers who treated her also became infected and died.
By September 15, there were
81 confirmed cases
and 28 deaths, including
four health workers
.
The DRC has had 15 prior Ebola epidemics, with the
largest in 2019
and the
most recent
in 2022.
But genetic analysis
shows
the outbreak likely began after a spillover from an animal to a human, rather than a continuation of earlier outbreaks.
How does it spread and what are the symptoms?
Ebola virus disease was
first identified
in 1976 in a village near the Ebola River in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) and Sudan (now South Sudan).
Fruit bats are the natural host of the virus. Humans may become infected
after contact
with animals such as bats, chimpanzees, antelope or porcupines.
Ebola
mainly spreads
through direct contact with blood or o…

A month after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared an international emergency, the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain has grown to more than 800 confirmed cases, with warnings mounting that it could become the worst on record, surpassing the 2014-16 West Africa epidemic that killed more than 11,000 people.

Health teams are so stretched that tens of thousands of contacts of those cases remain untraced, Jean Kaseya, director general of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, told Reuters, pointing to insecurity and the urban, mining-heavy setting of the outbreak as central obstacles.

The head of Africa’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warned that the

outbreak in Congo could be the worst ever, saying on Tuesday that it could cost billions of dollars to contain later if critical weaknesses in the response are not addressed quickly.
More than 830 cases of the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no proven treatment or vaccine, have been confirmed in Congo, 196 of them fatal. The disease, transmitted through body fluids even after death, is spreading fast across three provinces in the Democratic Republic of Congo, government data shows.
“If we don’t stop the outbreak very soon it will be worse than what we had in West Africa and eastern DRC,” Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya told a virtual meeting of African heads of state and donors in Burundi.

Africa CDC head warns Ebola outbreak could be worst ever
Today the head of Africa's Centres for Disease Control and Prevention warned that thousands of case contacts have not been traced in the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
“If we don't stop the outbreak very soon, it will be worse than what we had in West Africa and eastern DRC,” Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya, MD, MPH, said during a virtual meeting of African heads of state in Burundi. Kaseya was referring to an outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in 2014 to 2016 thatkilled more than 11,000 people.
The outbreak currently has at least827 cases and 194 deaths, but it is largely uncontrolled in North and South Kivu and Ituri provinces. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which has no vaccine or treatments.
Children diagnosed as having multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) following COVID-19 infection are more likely to have new and lingering health conditions than those not diagnosed with MIS-C, according tostudypublished last week inPediatrics.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is facing an unprecedented Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak, confirmed in May 2026, which has exposed major weaknesses in the health system and global response. While treatment centers in Bunia and Rwampara are caring for patients and some recoveries have been reported, the limited availability of specific medical countermeasures remains a major challenge. Efforts to control the outbreak are further complicated by the lack of a vaccine, ongoing research by Moderna and CEPI, and the need to manage both the spread of the virus and the care of affected individuals. This crisis highlights the urgent need for stronger preparedness and health infrastructure.

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo began worrying about possible Ebola cases in mid-April. Deaths in the northeastern part of the country that seemed like they may have been caused by the deadly virus prompted officials to take samples. They then sent them to the lab in Bunia.

"Act now or pay a much higher price later."
The Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has yet to reach its peak, but treatment centres are already at saturation point, with health officials warning that far greater urgency is needed to contain the virus.
Since the outbreak was first declared in May, there have been more than1,700 confirmed cases and 580 deathsfrom the Bundibugyo variant of the virus - for which there is not yet a dedicated treatment (althoughtrials are underway) or a vaccine. Neighbouring Uganda has had 20 confirmed cases and two deaths.
In the DRC, contact-tracing coverage stands at around 60% of cases, leaving thousands of contacts undiscovered. That makes breaking the transmission chain all the harder, deepening fear and stigma.

Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo –Sadiki Patrick, 40, is still grappling with the loss of his 15-year-old daughter, Judith, in Mongbwalu, a mining town in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Judith is one of the latest victims of Ebola as the country battles yet another outbreak, the seventeenth in just 50 years.
“It is heartbreaking to lose my third child in the prime of her youth,” Patrick, whose name has been changed to protect his identity, told Al Jazeera.
“I sent her to school so that she could be educated and become a valuable member of society. Now, she is a thing of the past,” he said, his voice heavy with sorrow.
He described the situation in Mongbwalu as dire, accusing authorities of failing to act quickly enough to contain the outbreak before it had spread.
According to Congolese authorities, Mongbwalu is where the first cases of the new Ebola outbreak were reported. Residents describe daily deaths in the village, while local health services struggle to respond.

[Independent (Kampala)] As the number of Bundibugyo Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) pushes past 1,000, doctors continue to fight the disease without a vaccine or cure. But the country's top Ebola scientist tells SciDev.Net "there is still hope for this epidemic". The outbreak detected in early May has spread rapidly across the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu in Eastern DRC, and into neighbouring Uganda, with fears that it could cross to South Sudan.

The WHO updated the risk assessment at the national level as "very high."
TheEbolaoutbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is "spreading rapidly," according to the head of the World Health Organization.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned during a Friday press briefing that the U.N. health agency has upgraded its risk assessment for spread at the national level from "high" to "very high." At the regional level, the risk remains "high" while the global level is still "low."
There have been more than 900 suspected cases and 115 deaths from Ebola reported in the DRC, the WHO and the country'sMinistry of Communication said on Sunday. The WHOconfirmed 101 casesas of Sunday, Ghebreyesussaid in an X post.
Ghebreyesus described the situation in neighboring Uganda as "stable" with five cases and one death confirmed. At least some of the cases were people who traveled from the DRC.
The outbreak is currently active in 3 DRC provinces: Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu. The epicenter is in a "highly insecure" area -- the DRC's eastern provinces of North Kivu and Ituri -- where ongoi…

On 15 May 2026, authorities declared a new Ebola outbreak across several health zones in Ituri Province, in north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The outbreak is unfolding in a region already stretched thin - a health system weakened by staff shortages, supply gaps, and ongoing insecurity.
Red Cross volunteers are on the ground.
The Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (CRRDC), supported by the ICRC and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), is working alongside Congolese health authorities to respond. In Bunia - one of seven health zones currently affected - teams of volunteers are carrying out safe and dignified burials and running community awareness sessions.
When someone dies of suspected Ebola, how their body is handled matters enormously - both to protect those left behind and to contain the spread of the virus.
Raphael Olangi leads the CRRDC's Dignified and Safe Burial team. His team works with precision and care. "The first thing we do is take a sample from the deceased person in the form of an oral swab. Then we stabilize the b…

DR Congo: Authorities struggle to contain fast-moving Ebola outbreak
Uganda has confirmed two new Ebola cases among healthcare workers in Kampala, bringing the country’s total to seven, all linked to the outbreak in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. In eastern Congo, where more than 900 suspected cases have been identified, authorities and volunteers are struggling to contain the spread amid limited resources, ongoing violence, and the absence of a vaccine or treatment for the rare Bundibugyo strain.
Addressing the Ebola Crisis Amid the Humanitarian Emergency in ...
Addressing the Ebola Crisis Amid the Humanitarian Emergency in ...
The new Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo is exploding and could reach the scale of the massive 2014 outbreak in West Africa.
This outbreak will be uniquely difficult to contain, both because it is occurring in the midst of a major conflict-induced humanitarian emergency and displacement crisis, and because many of the institutions that supported previous complex Ebola operations are badly degraded or outright gone.
Only twice before has an Ebola outbreak exceeded 425 cases, and both of those outbreaks posed huge operational and contextual challenges that allowed the virus to achieve explosive transmission. While national ministries and local frontline health workers are always the core of any successful Ebola response, they need extensive international support when outbreaks reach large scale. This new outbreak combines some of the greatest difficulties of both previous large-scale Ebola responses: an insecure setting with widespread violence and displacement; low community trust and rampant misinformation; an outbreak that has achieved unprecedented momentum; and no proven vaccine or treatments.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared on May 17 that an
outbreak
of a rare strain of Ebola, known as the Bundibugyo virus, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda constituted a public health emergency of international concern. While Ebola is significantly less transmissible than many airborne viruses, there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
said
