Tensions rise as Ebola treatment centre torched in DR Congo'
Residents in a town at the centre of an Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have set fire to a treatment facility after being prevented from taking the body of a local man, underscoring deep mistrust and anger around the response to the virus.
The attack took place on Thursday in Rwampara, in Ituri province, where health workers have been struggling to contain the disease in an area with few medical facilities and where many people are displaced by conflict.
Witnesses said a group of young men stormed the centre after authorities refused to release the body of a friend who was believed to have died from Ebola. The group then set fire to parts of the facility.
“The police intervened to try to calm the situation, but unfortunately they were unsuccessful,” Alexis Burata, a local student who said he was nearby at the time, told the Associated Press. “The young people ended up setting fire to the centre.”
An on-the-ground AP reporter saw people break into the building and torch items inside, as well as what appeared to be the body of at least one suspected Ebola victim that was being stored th…

A conflict that has been raging for three decades has left millions of people displaced, some fleeing from one camp to another since they were born. Some of the internally displaced people are now confronting another threat: Ebola. Almost a million of them are in Ituri Province, home to the three hardest-hit towns in the latest outbreak. The Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday said confirmed Ebola cases had climbed to nearly 600, raising awareness within the local population about the importance of safety measures. "If you have a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or severe weakness, you should go to the nearest health center immediately," a governement statement said, urging populations to follow health workers' instructions and not to attack them. Mistrust and resistance have hampered the response, with attacks on burial teams and treatment centres reported.

At least 30 people have died since the start of May in one camp for displaced civilians in northeastern Congo, a death rate that camp officials said was unprecedented, and, because of the symptoms, could indicate Ebola is spreading fast there.
It was not possible to confirm the causes of death because patients or their relatives in Kigonze camp in Bunia - the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo - had until Thursday refused testing the living or dead, a camp spokesperson and aid organisation Caritas said.
However, all had symptoms including headaches, fever and vomiting, which are associated with Ebola, a camp spokesperson, a bereaved father, three aid sources and a civil society leader told Reuters.
"People didn't just die like this before," camp spokesperson Desire Grodya Bapi told Reuters.
The deaths in Kigonze, which has more than 15,000 residents, raise fears that Ebola may be circulating undetected among eastern Congo's over five million displaced people, with resistance to testing compounding the challenge posed by severely limited sanitation measures.

Authorities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are actively searching for a six-year-old Ebola patient and her mother following an incident where armed men stormed the hospital where they were receiving treatment.
The child was forcibly taken from Wanamahika Hospital, located in the city of Butembo, by "very angry" men armed with knives, according to a statement from local health official Dr Lubambo Maboko Gaston.
It remains unclear whether the men had any prior relationship with the child, but widespread suspicion and fear regarding Ebola treatment centres have been prevalent during the current outbreak.
In an interview with the news agency, Dr Gaston appealed to the child and her mother to return to a health facility, warning that they risked "worsening their health" and "infecting th…

Authorities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are actively searching for a six-year-old Ebola patient and her mother after armed men stormed Wanamahika Hospital in Butembo, where they were being treated. Local health official Dr Lubambo Maboko Gaston reported that the child was forcibly taken by "very angry" men wielding knives. The situation raises concerns about the safety of Ebola treatment facilities amid ongoing fears and suspicions surrounding the outbreak, which has resulted in nearly 200 deaths and over 840 confirmed cases.
What We Know So Far
The incident occurred on Monday, with the child and her mother now unaccounted for. Dr Gaston has urged them to return to a health centre, warning that their absence could worsen their health and pose a risk of infecting others. The ongoing Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, has seen a significant number of fatalities and cases, particularly concentrated in the provinces of Ituri, South Kivu, and North Kivu.

Tensions are escalating in northeastern Congo as fear and anger over the Ebola outbreak spill into violence, with two treatment facilities attacked within days and health workers struggling to contain the spread of the virus.
In the mining town of Mongbwalu, enraged residents stormed a medical facility late Friday and set fire to a treatment tent used for Ebola patients. The structure, operated by humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders, was part of a hospital treating suspected and confirmed infections, AP reported.
The attack triggered chaos inside the facility, forcing patients and staff to flee. While no injuries were immediately reported, hospital officials said 18 people suspected of carrying the virus escaped during the panic and remain missing.
Hospital director Dr. Richard Lokudi condemned the incident, warning that the disappearance of suspected cases could worsen transmission in surrounding communities.
The violence followed another attack a day earlier in another town, Rwampara, where an Ebola treatment centre was burned after local families were prevent…
