Congo’s Ministry of Health on Sunday said 72 new cases were reported in a 24-hour period, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 782. Those include 181 confirmed deaths, with 29 new ones.

A further 94 suspected cases and 101 deaths have been linked to an outbreak of Ebola
On 15 May, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) declared an outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
While 550 have so far been confirmed, a further 94 suspected cases have been reported in Ituri Province, situated in the north-east of the country. Sadly, 101 people are confirmed to have died.
On Saturday 23 May, the Africa CDC warned that ten other African nations are at risk of Ebola. The ten countries include Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Zambia.
In the past week, the numbers linked to the outbreak have changed. More cases are now confirmed and fewer are listed as suspected. This is mainly because testing has improved in Ituri. Before, tests had to be done over 1,500 km away in Kinshasa.
The number of confirmed cases and deaths is still increasing and needs urgent action. It is still not known how widespread the outbreak is.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has become the largest ever recorded, with more than 1,400 confirmed cases and more than 400 deaths across affected areas.
The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Mohamed Janabi, said this on Friday during an online media conference on Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda.
Mr Janabi described the outbreak as one of Africa’s most serious public health emergencies this year, urging sustained global support to contain the virus.
According to him, despite rising infections, the WHO reported encouraging progress through improved surveillance, stronger contact tracing, earlier case detection, and increasing recoveries.
He said the transmission persists in a small number of hotspots, with weekly infections reaching their highest levels since the outbreak began, underscoring the need for intensified response efforts.

The World Health Organization said on Wednesday that the world is "catching up" with the Ebola outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo, where there have been 344 confirmed cases of the disease and 60 confirmed deaths, although challenges remain. "The outbreak had a big head start, and we're still behind, but under the leadership of the government of DRC, we're catching up," WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a press briefing. The outbreak, linked to the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, has spread to neighbouring Uganda where 15 cases have been confirmed, including one death, the agency said.

Yesterday and today, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reduced the official case count of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda from nearly 1,000 cases to321 confirmed cases,including 48 deaths in the DRC.
Another 116 cases are suspected. In Uganda, the new case count is 11 confirmed cases, one confirmed death, one probable case, and one probable death.
But rather than signaling good news, relief organizations caution that the mixed messaging is part of a broader, chaotic picture of an outbreak that may have been simmering for months and could take several more months to contain.
Abdou Sebushishe, MD, from the International Medical Corps in the DRC city of Goma, toldCBS newstoday that as many as 20% of case-patients are healthcare workers and that it could be “beyond six months before this outbreak could be put under control. I think the outbreak is outpacing the current response, and there are adjustments being made to catch up.”

On 1 December 2025, the Ministry of Health (MoH) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared the end of the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak which had been declared on 4 September 2025. The end was declared after two consecutive incubation periods (a total of 42 days) since the last person confirmed with EVD tested negative for the virus and was discharged on 19 October 2025. A total of 64 cases (53 confirmed, 11 probable), including 45 deaths (CFR 70.3%), were reported from six health areas in Bulape Health Zone, Kasai Province. WHO and partners provided technical, operational and financial support to the government to contain the outbreak. This is the country’s 16th outbreak of Ebola.
Although the outbreak has been declared over, health authorities are maintaining surveillance to rapidly identify and respond to any re-emergence. — The
Ebola outbreak
in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda is still spreading one month after the outbreak was declared. The total number of confirmed cases surged between Monday and Tuesday to over 800, an increase of about 300 since last week.
The United Nations' World Health Organization has warned that the virus is still "increasing" in its "geographic spread" in Congo, and experts say it's a race against time to stop it from mushrooming into a wider health crisis.
In the epicenter of Ituri province, Congolese security forces fired warning shots to break up an angry crowd of people trying to take the body of an Ebola victim home. Health workers were trying to remove the body for the community's safety — even in death, victims are highly contagious.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Congolese authorities have reported one of the highest daily increases in Ebola cases in a month-old outbreak as the virus spreads quickly in a remote region whose shifting population challenges efforts to find those exposed.
Congo’s Ministry of Health on Sunday said 72 new cases were reported in a 24-hour period, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 782. Those include 181 confirmed deaths, with 29 new ones.
