WHO published a Disease Outbreak News item on 13 June 2026 about Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, reported by bluesky. The organization said there is no approved (or licensed) vaccine or specific treatment for the virus, a fact corroborated across multiple outlets. WHO announced it was scaling up support to the governments of the DRC and Uganda, strengthening surveillance, contact tracing, clinical preparedness and management, delivery of supplies, community engagement and cross‑border preparedness, and stated that community engagement will be key to controlling outbreaks (who.int).

Accounts of the outbreak’s size differ. One western source reported more than 900 suspected cases, at least 101 confirmed infections and around 220 suspected deaths in the DRC and neighbouring Uganda. Another western source reported that the current outbreak in the DRC has more than 1,250 cases (both western).

The outbreak is centred in Ituri province, where Bunia is located (france24). Authorities sought to curb the spread of Ebola in Bunia (france24). On 27 May, Muslims in Bunia marked Eid under strict hygiene measures, with worshippers wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and praying in smaller gatherings (france24). A health worker in Mongbwalu collected medication for patients suspected of having the Bundibugyo virus the previous month (nytimes). Work is ongoing to test promising treatment candidates for the Bundibugyo Ebola species (who.int).

WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus can be survived with good medical care (hindu).
