Ebola: Uganda to deploy 40 health workers to DR Congo
______________Uganda is set to deploy at least 40 medical experts and a technical response team to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the first phase of a cross-border Ebola response aimed at containing the outbreak at its source, the Ministry of Health has announced. The deployment comes as Uganda's Ebola caseload rose to 19 confirmed infections on June 5, including 13 active cases, two deaths and four recoveries. Across the border, the DRC has recorded 363 confirmed cases and 62 deaths from the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, according to figures released by Congolese authorities.Health officials said the outbreak in eastern DRC is increasingly driving infected patients across the border into Uganda seeking treatment, creating additional challenges for surveillance and containment efforts.

The Ugandan government has sharply criticized the international community for imposing severe travel restrictions on its citizens, arguing the country is being "punished for its transparency" despite running a highly effective containment operation.
The protest comes as the Ministry of Health announced significant progress in managing the current outbreak, which involves mostly imported cases. On Thursday, health officials discharged four fully recovered Ebola patients and released 270 people who successfully completed their mandatory 21-day quarantine period.

KAMPALA – Uganda has deployed 40 medical doctors and health specialists to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to reinforce efforts aimed at containing the rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak that has already spilled across borders and raised alarm among regional health authorities.

Kampala, Uganda, November 5, 2024 —The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is responding to the Mpox outbreak in Uganda where caseshave now risen to 359in up to 35 districts with one confirmed death. The IRC response is part of a broader effort to enhance epidemic preparedness while improving the health and nutrition status of refugees and vulnerable community members across 18 high-need districts. The IRC and its partner Medical Teams International (MTI) are working together on initiatives to lower the humanitarian impact of disasters, particularly in areas impacted by recent refugee influxes and ongoing health challenges. The response involves efforts to identify cases early and awareness-raising activities to prevent the further spread of the disease.
Elijah Okeyo, the IRC Uganda Country Director, said.
“With the increasing number of Mpox cases in the country, attention needs to be drawn to the mechanisms that prevent further spread of the disease. Evidence from our work on the ground shows that refugee settlements, transit centers and Points of Entry still lack sufficient Mpox response capacities, including early det…
