Roy Hattersley, the former Labour deputy leader, has died, with Sir Keir Starmer leading tributes to his “decades of service”.
Known as Labour’s “nearly man,” he failed to gain the leadership of the party he loved and spent more than two decades of his 33 years as an MP on the opposition benches.
Prime Minister Sir Keir wrote on X: “Roy Hattersley was a giant of the Labour movement.
“Through decades of service, including as deputy leader and a minister, he never lost his belief in a more equal Britain.
“My thoughts are with his wife Maggie and his family.”
Mr Hattersley spent much of the party’s wilderness years of the 1980s battling to keep it together just as ideological infighting threatened to tear it apart.

Labour politician and former deputy leader Roy Hattersley has died aged 93.
Born in Sheffield in 1932, the Labour politician, author and journalist first entered Parliament in 1964 as MP for Birmingham Sparkbrook overturning a Tory majority of 900 to record a 1,200 vote win.
He went on to hold the seat for 33 years, fighting off competition for the seat through eight general elections. He served as minister of state for defence administration and minister of state at the Foreign Office under Harold Wilson. In James Callaghan’s government he took up a post in the Cabinet in 1976 as secretary of state for prices and consumer protection.

Born in 1932 to a working-class family in Sheffield, he went on to forge a formidable career in politics after studying economics at the University of Hull.
In 1964, he was elected as the Labour MP forBirminghamSparkbrook, a constituency he would represent for more than 32 years.
Lord Hattersley, who was a respected Daily Mail columnist, held several ministerial positions during Harold Wilson's time as prime minister, including employment minister and deputy defence minister during the 1960s.
From 1974 to 1976, he was appointed by Mr Wilson as minister of state for foreign and commonwealth affairs. The following year he held the position of privy councillor.
And between the years of 1976 and 1979, he served as secretary for prices and consumer protection in James Callaghan's cabinet.
