Sir Keir Starmer has warned his likely successor Andy Burnham it will not be possible to spend less time focusing on international affairs.
In his first sit-down interview since announcing his resignation, the Prime Minister also spoke of his “intensely personal” decision to quit.
Throughout his premiership, Sir Keir has faced accusations of spending too much time on the world stage instead of domestic affairs, with his opponents branding him “never here Keir”.
Mr Burnham, his likely successor in Downing Street, has largely focused on domestic issues as he sets out his stall to be the next prime minister.

But Sir Keir warned that Mr Burnham will not be able to spend less time grappling with the turmoil around the world than he has.
He told the BBC: “If you’re prime minister and you care what bills are going to be like in any household around the country, you have to care about finding a lasting solution to the situation in Ukraine, you have to care about what happens in the Strait of Hormuz.

Pressure is piling on Sir Keir Starmer after Andy Burnham stormed to victory in the Makerfield by-election, with the number of Labour MPs who have called for him to set out plans to quit Downing Street reaching 100.

Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed that he will step down as Prime Minister, after overwhelming pressure from Labour MPs to make way for Andy Burnham to become Labour leader.

He said: "Walking out this street two years ago was the proudest moment of my life, a new Labour government after years of disappointment and despair.

SirKeir Starmerhas insisted that he was a successful prime minister in his first interview since announcing his resignation.
Speaking since his tearful resignation last Tuesday, Starmer claimed that he 'saved' theLabour Partyand promised to 'keep his mouth shut' under his successor, saying he'd 'always got on' withAndy Burnham.
In the candid interview, Sir Keir described the decision to resign after a weekend with his family at Chequers as 'intensely personal'.
Sir Keir said: 'For me, and this may be different for other people, in the end it became an intensely personal decision, and that's why it was a decision taken ultimately when Vic and I were away with the kids, we went to Chequers and just spent two days together as a family, and that's when I came to my final decision.'
He also defended his decision to spend a significant time during his two-year premiership on global affairs instead of domestic issues, hitting back at critics who labelled him 'never here Keir'.

Keir Starmer has announced his No10 exit as his support drained away and the most likely challenger to his leadership arrives later today at Westminster in Andy Burnham.
Voice cracking with emotion, he announced his decision to quit in Downing Street and laid out plans for leaving office and to ensure an "orderly transition" in running the country.
He said: "The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election - I have heard the answer from my parliamentary party and I accept that answer with good grace. I will resign as leader of the Labour Party - I have spoken to HM the King this morning to inform him."

Keir Starmer is under mounting pressure to resign and allow Labour to choose a successor capable of winning the next general election.
The embattled Prime Minister has been in Downing Street for just two years but his popularity has tanked amid an on-going cost-of-living crisis and a series of policy blunders.
He is expected to be replaced in the autumn by newly-elected MP Andy Burnham.
Starmer can point to some successes including boosting the minimum wage for workers, falling mortgage costs, reducing the number of people entering the UK illegally, and winning the respect of other European leaders at a time of global turbulence.
He has also had to deal with the return of Donald Trump to the White House and the US President's erratic foreign policy, including the chaotic attacks on Iran which have caused further price hikes for consumers.
But critics of Starmer have repeatedly claimed he has failed to offer a coherent, positive vision for the UK and has consequently left the field open f…
