British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement last month that he plans to step down as prime minister and leader of the Labour Party has set in motion the process to select his successor.
The successful candidate will take charge of the governing party, which holds a strong majority in parliament, and will become the United Kingdom’s seventh prime minister in a decade.
Here’s what you need to know about the Labour leadership selection process, including how it works and who is in the running.
Starmer became prime minister on July 5, 2024, after a landslide Labour election victory following 14 years of Conservative Party rule. Heannounced plans to resignon June 22 amid growing pressure overpainful local election defeatsfor Labour, domestic policy shifts and Starmer’s appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States. Andy Burnham is likely to discuss the Labour leadership situation directly with Sir Keir Starmer if he wins the Makerfield by-election, a Cabinet minister said.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said Mr Burnham deserves to be heard “loud and clear at the top of politics” if he succeeds in fighting off the challenge from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK in the seat.
If Mr Burnham does hold Makerfield for Labour, he is expected to use his return to the Commons to launch an effort to oust the Prime Minister.

Voters will go to the polls in Makerfield on Thursday in what could be one of the most consequential by-elections in British political history.
Andy Burnham is standing as Labour’s candidate in the Greater Manchester constituency with the hope of returning to Parliament to oust Sir Keir Starmer and replace him as Prime Minister.
Sir Keir said on Wednesday he was willing to offer the Mayor of Greater Manchester a “big” job in his Government, should Mr Burnham win when Thursday’s votes are counted.
But allies of Mr Burnham said he was not interested in the offer, insisting “the benefit Andy has is the wind of change for not having been associated with the Government’s failings”.
Mr Burnham and his allies are reported to be hoping for a “coronation” in which Sir Keir stands aside, rather t…

LONDON, U.K.: Andy Burnham from the Labour Party, who is currently the mayor of Greater Manchester, has won a special election to become a Member of Parliament. This win puts him in a strong position to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for leadership.
Burnham clearly defeated Rob Kenyon from the anti-immigration Reform UK party to win the Makerfield seat in northwest England. The result, announced early Friday, strengthens Burnham's position as a leading candidate to replace Starmer as Labour leader and possibly become prime minister. The 56-year-old politician, known as the "King of the North," received nearly 55 percent of the 45,510 votes cast, finishing more than 9,000 votes ahead of Kenyon.
In his victory speech, Burnham made it clear that he aims to lead the country, not just serve as one of over 400 Labour MPs in the 650-seat Parliament. He said that people feel politics is not working and that the country is not in a good place, adding that this moment could be a turning point.
Starmer, who has said he will fight any leadership challenge, congratulated Burnham and said voters chose Labour's message of hope and unity over divisio…

Andy Burnham said Labour had a “final chance to change” after his decisive win in the Makerfield by-election set up a showdown with Sir Keir Starmer.
Allies of Mr Burnham called on the Prime Minister to hand over power after he defied national trends to increase Labour’s share of the vote in a seat where Nigel Farage’s Reform UK made sweeping gains in last month’s local elections.
The Prime Minister has insisted he will not quit and will fight any leadership challenge.
Mr Burnham defeated Reform UK’s Robert Kenyon by 9,231 votes, up from 5,399 in 2024, and Labour’s vote share increased by 9.61%.
In his victory speech he urged his party to act now, saying there would be no second chance.

Downing Street has rejected reports that Sir Keir Starmer is planning to tell ministers they should quit if they wish to support Andy Burnham in any future Labour leadership contest.
The Financial Times reported that the Prime Minister has taken the pre-emptive action to see off any resignations which could follow if Mr Burnham is successful in winning the Makerfield by-election next week.
But the Prime Minister’s political spokesman said no such conversations had taken place when asked by reporters.
He added: “The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader. It has not been triggered.”

Labour party veteran and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham is looking to win the parliamentary by-election for the Makerfield constituency in northwestern England, so that he can then try to replace Starmer as prime minister.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 am (0600 GMT). They will close at 10:00 pm, with counting due to begin straight away.
Pollsters expect Burnham to win the historic contest, but he faces a tough fight from the hard-right Reform UK party.

Andy Burnham is an affable man. As one of the best known politicians in the country, he has celebrity status on the streets of Greater Manchester. He never refuses a selfie, a handshake, a question on policy.
But when Josh Simons resigned his seat to make way for Mr Burnham last week, the media spotlight became more of an intense experience than he has ever known. Scrutiny of his economic policy, his handling of grooming gangs, even his running gear, all came thick and fast.
He’s taken it all in good part - even admitting that his wife and daughter have long insisted that his now famous short shorts are ‘not wildly flattering’ for a man of his age. But a day after his official selection as

Sir Keir Starmer warned Andy Burnham not to throw the country into “chaos” by launching a leadership challenge if he wins a return to Westminster.
The Greater Manchester mayor hopes to win Thursday’s Makerfield by-election and could then launch a campaign to replace Sir Keir as prime minister and Labour leader.
Sir Keir insisted he would fight any leadership challenge but acknowledged voters’ frustrations with the lack of progress in his efforts to change the country.

The polls in Makerfield have finally closed, in a contest that could shape the future of Britain.
Labour leadership hopeful Andy Burnham is hoping to defeat Reform’s Robert Kenyon, and then is widely expected to challenge the PM.
Speaking on Wednesday, Keir Starmer said he was willing to offer the Mayor of Greater Manchester a “big” job in his Government, should Mr Burnham win, but allies of Mr Burnham insist he is not interested in the offer.
Mr Burnham has declared the race a chance to "write a new script for Britain", and put power in the hands of voters who he says have been ignored by Westminster for too long.

Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield byelection for Labour, gaining 55% of the vote on an exceptionally high turnout of 58.7%. He won 9,000 more votes than Reform UK’s Robert Kenyon, in what turned out to be an unusual byelection swing to the party of government.
The scale of a result like this sends a message of its own to Reform UK, to Labour, and to the incumbent prime minister,
Keir Starmer
. But what can we make of Burnham’s message in his victory speech?
After thanking his opponents for the “civil debate,” Burnham began with a charge that politics is not working. “Everyone can feel the country isn’t where it should be,” he said, adding, “Tonight could – just could – be the turning point.”
A recurring theme was hope for the future. Campaign material urged voters to
“Vote Andy. Vote Hope”
. The emphasis on hope could be read as a rebuke to both Starmer and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. Starmer for his unfulfilled promises in government, and Farage for his divisive rhetoric in opposition.
Another key message was ch…

Burnham wins key UK poll, paving way for bid to challenge PM Starmer
Veteran UK Labour politician Andy Burnham emphatically won a crunch by-election on Friday, securing a parliamentary seat and clearing the way for a widely expected leadership challenge against beleaguered Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Burnham, a former government minister who has been Greater Manchester mayor since 2017, ensured his return to parliament by easily beating the hard-right Reform UK party's candidate in the Makerfield constituency in northwest England.
The 56-year-old longtime figure in centre-left Labour has indicated he will challenge Starmer for the party's leadership, and to be prime minister, and needed to win the high-stakes vote to be in a position to trigger such a contest.
If Starmer does leave office this year, then Britain will get its seventh prime minister in 10 years.
"I do say to my own party, this is a final chance to change," Burnham said in his acceptance speech after securing nearly 55 percent of the vote, beating Reform's Robert Kenyon by more than 9,000 ballots.

In the end, it was not even close. Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election by a landslide, putting him firmly on course to be Britain’s next Prime Minister. The Mayor of Greater Manchester managed to comfortably beat even the most optimistic of polls by winning an impressive 24,937 votes (54.8 per cent), more than 20 points higher than Reform’s Robert Kenyon 15,696 (34.5 per cent). In a distant third came Restore Britain’s Rebecca Shepherd who took 3,111 votes (6.8 per cent), enough to keep her deposit. In an impassioned address, Burnham suggested tonight ‘could be the turning point’ for the country and the ‘final chance to change’ for the Labour party.
It was just six weeks ago, at the local elections, that Labour won just 24 per cent of the vote here in Makerfield. By dint of his stature and status as a PM-designate, Burnham has managed to completely turn that around, winning a majority of almost 10,000 on a 23-point swing. He…

LONDON — Labour’s warring factions can at least agree on one thing: Nigel Farage risks throwing their plans to topple Keir Starmer into disarray.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham looks to have emerged from an bitter internecine battle this week as the best contender to dislodge the deeply unpopular Labour prime minister from office.
But to challenge the PM he must first win a by-election in northwest England that promises to be a political circus like no other.

Farage has vowed to “throw absolutely everything” at the battle to win Makerfield, which is expected next month. There’s good reason to think his surging Reform UK party could win.
Farage’s poll-topping band effectively deployed a “Vote Reform. Get Starmer Out” slogan to triumph at recent local elections.
“You can’t really use that line in a campaign where the Labour candidate is objectively doing that in a much neater way,” said one MP in the region, who was granted anonymity to discuss sensitive party matters.
This will be a case of “Vote Burnham. Potentially Get Starmer Out,” whether the Labour campaign can explicitly say it or not.

Sir Keir Starmer has said Andy Burnham will make a good prime minister as Labour MPs begin formally nominating his successor.
Mr Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, is the only declared candidate for the Labour leadership and appears to be on course for a coronation within two weeks.
As nominations formally opened on Thursday, the Prime Minister praised his likely successor.
Asked whether Mr Burnham would make a good prime minister, Sir Keir told reporters: “Yes, I do.

Labour leadership frontrunner Andy Burnham will pledge to give Britain the “circuit-breaker it needs” in a major speech unveiling his plans for devolution and the economy.
The Makerfield MP will confirm a flagship proposal to create a “No 10” in the North and ambitions for “good growth in every postcode” with what allies say is the biggest transfer of power out of Whitehall in modern times.
In a speech in Manchester on Monday, the former metro mayor will call for decision-making to be pushed back into local communities as part of his vision to “lift Britain back up”.
In a sign he hopes to fight and win at least two general elections, he will set out a “10-year mission” aimed at raising living standards through reindustrialisation, housing, infrastructure and reform of essential utilities.
Mr Burnham, who served as a minister and on the Opposition frontbench before becoming a regional mayor in 2017, will suggest his generation of politicians – himself included – must take responsibility for the loss of public trust in politics.

Andy Burnham has said MPs are privately urging him to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership in an intervention likely to fuel speculation he could be seeking a return to Westminster.
The Greater Manchester
Mayor
and former Leigh MP accused Downing Street of creating a “climate of fear” and said “wholesale change” was required to see off an “existential” threat to the ruling party.
And he set out his vision for how to “turn the country around”, including higher council tax on some homes in southern England and a 50p top rate of income tax, in an interview with the Telegraph.

Andy Burnham’s allies believe Sir Keir Starmer should set out a timetable to hand over the premiership in September to avoid jeopardising Labour’s prospects in the Greater Manchester mayoral race, it is understood.
The leadership hopeful’s victory in the Makerfield by-election has set up a battle for No 10 as the Prime Minister made clear he will fight any challenge to his position earlier on Friday.
Supporters close to the outgoing Greater Manchester mayor are not seeking an immediate transfer of power as they want time to prepare for governing in the event that he succeeds in ousting Sir Keir, it is understood.
Mr Burnham’s election on Friday as the MP for Makerfield also means he is giving up the mayoral role he has held since 2017, with a contest to replace him set for July 30.

Andy Burnham launches Makerfield by-election campaign
The battle for
Makerfield
is no ordinary by-election.
Andy Burnham
, currently the mayor of Greater Manchester, is standing as Labour’s candidate in an effort to return to Parliament as an MP. If he wins, then he is expected to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the
Labour leadership
, although he may not launch his bid immediately.
It means this by-election could help decide who runs the country as Prime Minister. But Mr Burnham faces a challenge from Reform UK, led by
Nigel Farage
, who are going all-out to win the seat and stop his leadership ambitions in their tracks. To make the contest even more interesting, Reform is fighting a battle against Restore Britain, the party led by Rupert Lowe, Mr Lowe, the MP for Great Yarmouth, used to be a Reform MP but had a spectacular falling out with Mr Farage and now leads his own party.

Keir Starmer announced his resignation as British prime minister and Labour leader on Monday, paving the way for a leadership contest that could see Andy Burnham emerge as his successor.
The Greater Manchester mayor, a popular Labour Party figure, returned to Parliament with a decisive victory in the Makerfield by-election last week, removing a key obstacle to a potential bid to become Britain’s next prime minister.
If Burnham ultimately succeeds Starmer, his previous comments about President

In an intervention likely to increase speculation that he is

The interventions have left open questions about how, in practise, Burnham could seek to oust Starmer and lead the Labour Party.

Labour’s leadership elections follow strict procedures. A contest is triggered if the leader resigns or the post is declared vacant. Unlike the Conservative Party, Labour has no binding mechanism for MPs to remove the leader directly.

Andy Burnham faces an anxious wait for the results of the

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage arrived at a polling station alongside Mr Kenyon on Thursday, while Mr Burnham urged voters to “for ever associate this area with having brought a change to British politics”.
If former health secretary Mr Burnham wins, he is expected to challenge Sir Keir for the party leadership.
But Mr Kenyon also has had strong support in polls since the by-election was announced. Reform is worried about

Andy Burnham is almost guaranteed to be the next prime minister of the United Kingdom after 322 Labour MPs nominated him to take over from Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The total means that there are only 81 Labour MPs left who could nominate another contender, the minimum needed to get on to the ballot.
But convention dictates that the outgoing leader does not nominate a candidate, meaning in reality there are no longer enough undeclared MPs to back an alternative to Burnham.
The former Greater Manchester mayor secured the nominations -amounting to 80 per cent of the parliamentary party - by 5pm on Thursday, the first day MPs could formally back a leadership candidate.
Even before nominations opened, Burnham seemed almost certain to enjoy a coronation as Labour leader as the only declared candidate in the race to succeed Starmer.
But the size of his support in the parliamentary party means even a late challenger now has virtually no hope of securing the required nominations.
Starmer said on Thursday as nominations formally opened that Burnham would make a good prime minister.

Wes Streeting indicated he is prepared to trigger a Labour leadership contest as early as next week as he urged Sir Keir Starmer to set out a timetable for his departure if Andy Burnham wins this week’s Makerfield by-election.
The former health secretary insisted he has the backing of the 80 MPs required to stand in a contest as he accused Sir Keir of not listening to the party or his Cabinet in a series of public appearances on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister said he would prove his rivals wrong and “carry on with what I was elected to do” and “bring back the change that people desperately need” as he fights for his political future.

Sir Keir Starmer faces pressure to set out plans to quit Downing Street over the weekend after Andy Burnham stormed to victory in the Makerfield by-election.
The Prime Minister has repeatedly vowed to fight any leadership challenge, insisting he will not “walk away”.
But Mr Burnham’s by-election victory has prompted more backbenchers and Labour grandees to call for Sir Keir to stand down.
Some MPs who had signed a statement rejecting calls for a leadership election last month have now reversed their position while former home secretary Alan Johnson told LBC his message to the Prime Minister would be: “It’s over, Keir.”

LONDON:Veteran UK Labour politician Andy Burnham vowed to put Britain on a new path after winning a crunch by-election Friday as Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged to fight any bid to oust him from office.
Burnham, a former government minister who has been Greater Manchester mayor since 2017, ensured his return to parliament by easily beating the far-right Reform UK party's candidate in the Makerfield constituency in northwest England.
The 56-year-old stalwart of Labour's centre-left is seeking to replace Starmer as party leader and prime minister, and needed to win the high-stakes vote to be in a position to trigger such a contest.
"I do say to my own party, this is a final chance to change," Burnham said in his acceptance speech after securing nearly 55 percent of the vote, beating Reform's Robert Kenyon by more than 9,000 ballots.
"We've been on path for 40 years that simply hasn't worked for people and places in this part of the world," Burnham told cheering crowds on Friday.
"This is the change moment, we have an opportunity to turn the tide," he said, adding: "We're going to lay out a n…

British new Member of Parliament (MP) for Makerfield, Andy Burnham, is sworn in at the House of Commons, in London, Britain, June 22, 2026.
Andy Burnham
, the Labour lawmaker expected to replace
Keir Starmer
as British prime minister, will outline his vision for Britain on Monday, his office said, promising to change how the nation is governed with power moving from London to the regions.
Burnham, who returned to Westminster earlier this month after winning a parliamentary seat, is currently the only declared candidate to take over from Starmer and could be installed in Downing Street within weeks.
Starmer announced last week he would step down, just two years after winning a huge parliamentary majority for Labour, as his popularity sank.
Burnham, who rose to prominence as mayor of
Greater Manchester
and has been dubbed the "King of the North", will use Monday's speech to make devolving power to regions and local communities his flagship proposal.
He will also commit to a 10-year mission to raise
living standards
through reindustrialisation, housing, infrastructure and reform of utilities. The focus …

Andy Burnham, the politician who threatens to topple U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer's leadership, has called for tighter regulation on AI, Big Tech and key industries if he returns to central government.
"Lest we forget: the principal cause of the 2008 crash was a failure of regulation," the Labour Party politician and Mayor of Greater Manchester said in anarticlepublished by U.K. newspaper The Times on Thursday evening.
"So how can a new wave of deregulation plausibly be the answer to the problems we have experienced since? This is … the kind of thinking that would doom us to repeat past mistakes and, if we're not careful, prevent us from protecting children by failing to regulate social media, artificial intelligence and big tech."
Burnham — who is not yet a sitting member of the U.K. parliament — will run in the June 18 by-election in Makerfield, north-west England.
Being elected as a lawmaker in Westminster will clear the way for him to launch a formal leadership challenge to Starmer, whose premiership has been under intense pressure following a crushingdefeatfor the ruling Labour…

With Keir Starmer’s resignation triggering a rapid transition of power, Andy Burnham stands on the precipice of the premiership, offering a charismatic alternative to his predecessor’s managerial style. Yet, as the Labour Party prepares for a leadership transition on July 17, the former Greater Manchester Mayor faces an unforgiving economic reality that will test his popularity from day one.
The British political landscape has been upended. Following weeks of mounting pressure and acknowledging that he was no longer “best placed” to lead the party into the next general election, Keir Starmer announced his resignation on June 22. In the wake of this vacuum, the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has moved with clinical efficiency to set a leadership timetable.
With nominations opening on July 9 and closing a week later, the path is clear for Andy Burnham, the newly elected MP for Makerfield, to potentially be crowned leader at a special conference on July 17.

Starmer rival seeks win in UK poll pivotal to PM's fate - Nst
ASHTON-IN-MAKERFIELD: Britain holds a unique vote on Thursday that could trigger the endgame for Labour leader Keir Starmer's beleaguered premiership, or win him a reprieve.
Labour party veteran and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham is looking to triumph in a parliamentary by-election so that he can then try to replace Starmer as prime minister.
Pollsters expect Burnham to win the historic contest to represent the Makerfield constituency in northwest England, but he faces a tough fight from the hard-right Reform UK party.
"Almost undoubtedly it's in the hands of the voters of Makerfield as to whether or not Burnham becomes prime minister," political scientist John Curtice.
"If Burnham does win, his path to 10 Downing Street looks to be relatively assured. If they deny him the opportunity, it may be that Starmer will survive, at least for the time being," he told AFP.

Wes Streeting
has indicated he could pull the trigger on a leadership challenge as early as next week, as the upcoming

looms over Sir Keir Starmer’s position.
The former health secretary publicly criticised the prime minister on Tuesday, as he insisted he has the support of the 80 MPs needed to officially launch a leadership

The ultimatum comes ahead of this week’s crucial
by-election in Makerfield
, which could see Labour’s Andy Burnham claim victory, paving his way to return to Westminster and challenge Sir Keir.
The mayor of Greater Manchester is widely believed to be the prime minister’s most likely successor, having confirmed he would trigger a contest if he were to win the contest this week.
Mr Streeting expressed his hope that Sir Keir would use the weekend to reflect and choose to depart "on his own terms" following the vote.
But pressed on whether he would trigger a contest he stayed put, the ex-cabinet minister told BBC Newsnight: “We can’t carry on with this uncertainty and paralysis, and t…

He increased Labour’s vote share from the 2024 General Election with a higher turnout. The change Burnham has promised clearly captivated Makerfield’s voters. There are no caveats to his victory.

Such a comfortable result in Makerfield has led to many in Labour believing there should be a swift move, with a belief that Burnham should be elected leader without a contest and become Prime Minister in the coming weeks.
This will be tested in frenetic conversations in the coming days. Keir Starmer has been quick out the blocks to say he will contest a leadership election, as he is entitled to as sitting Leader.
Wes Streeting, the former Health Secretary, has similarly outlined his intention to contest the election in a “battle of ideas” and is adamant he has the 81 names needed.
What is clear, is that this weekend will see Labour lumin…

Former Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham seems poised to succeed
Keir Starmer
after the UK prime minister announced his resignation on Monday, and is widely considered the frontrunner for the role.
Just days ago, Burnham won a crucial by-election, the equivalent of a US special election, in
Makerfield
, northwest England, which had been triggered with the sole purpose of allowing him to run for the leadership as a sitting member of parliament.
Burnham had not even taken his seat in parliament before crushing pressure within the party prompted Starmer’s resignation – and the popular politician’s confirmation he would seek the top job.
Less than two years after Labour won a landslide election, Starmer’s authority has crumbled, while Nigel Farage’s populist right-wing party Reform UK and the populist left-wing Green Party have surged in opinion poll…

LONDON – Andy Burnham, the Labour lawmaker expected to replace Keir Starmer as British prime minister, will outline his vision for Britain on Monday, his office said, promising to change how the nation is governed with power moving from London to the regions.
Burnham, who rose to prominence as mayor of Greater Manchester and has been dubbed the “King of the North,” will use Monday’s speech to make devolving power to regions and local communities his flagship proposal.
He will also commit to a 10-year mission to raise living standards throu…

The Greater Manchester Mayor, widely seen as the

Andy Burnham has won a special election to the British parliament, clearing a path for him to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer for the party leadership.
Burnham, Labour's former Greater Manchester mayor, defeated the Reform U.K. party by more than 9,000 votes, taking nearly 55% of the vote, in the election in Makerfield, in north-west England.
Burnham could now trigger a leadership challenge to Starmer as soon as next week, once he is formally sworn in as a Member of Parliament. He will require the support of at least 81 Labour lawmakers.
A prominent figure on the party's left often dubbed Labour's "King in the North," Burnham said in his victory speech that Makerfield was "not a stepping stone" but a "touchstone," promising to put neglected communities at the center of his politics.
In his victory acceptance speech, Burnham appeared to lay the groundwork for a leadership bid.
He said the win provides the "chance to build a new politics, based on unity and hope", and an opportunity to turn "away from the path that takes us to a divided, dark politics of the kind we see in the Unit…
UNITED KINGDOM appealed in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom (general), United Kingdom
"I have known him a long time, I've worked with him when I first came to parliament, in his team di…

LONDON, June 19 (Reuters) - Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, won a parliamentary seat on Friday, a vital step towards fulfilling his ambition to replace his party colleague Keir Starmer as Labour leader and Britain's prime minister.
The scale of the victory, with 54.8% of the vote, will bolster the view of some in the governing Labour Party that only he can lead Labour to defeat Nigel Farage's populist Reform UK party in a future national election.
That could spur the party to seek a coronation for Burnham, forcing Starmer to step aside in a coordinated move rather than embarking on a months-long leadership contest.
About a quarter of Starmer's lawmakers have urged the prime minister to resign since his Labour Party last month suffered the heaviest local election losses of any governing party in more than three decades, largely due to a surge in support for Farage's anti-immigration party.
Burnham has said he would contest any leadership race, and is the frontrun…

Andy Burnham was sensationally handed a route back to Westminster to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for No10 - by an MP who was a minister and major supporter of the PM until just six weeks ago.
Mr Burnham confirmed he wants to contest a by-election in Makerfield in Wigan, after MP Josh Simons, the former tech minister, revealed he would quit so the Greater Manchester mayor could 'return home'.
Mr Simons, 32, is the former head of Labour Together, a think tank credited with getting Sir Keir into power in Labour, and only entered Parliament in 2024.
And even more astonishingly he was one of Sir Keir's more loyal ministers until March, when he waswas forced to quit after a row over Labour Together spying on journalists.
It is being reported the Prime Minister will not seek to block the move, with an ally telling the BBC: 'Keir is focused on bringing the party together so i…

Sir Keir Starmer has insisted he will stand in a Labour leadership contest, should one be triggered after Andy Burnham returns to Westminster following his victory in the Makerfield by-election.
The Prime Minister is under pressure to hand over power to Mr Burnham, who defied national trends to increase Labour’s share of the vote in a seat where Nigel Farage’s Reform UK made sweeping gains in last month’s local elections.
But Sir Keir insisted he will not “walk away” from Downing Street, setting Labour up for a showdown over the premiership.

The assertions emerge following Labour's crushing loss in Thursday's Gorton and Denton by-election
Supporters of Andy Burnham claim the Manchester mayor would establish a partnership with the Green Party and abolish first-past-the-post voting in favour of proportional representation should he replace Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister.
The assertions emerge following Labour's crushing loss in Thursday's Gorton and Denton by-election, which has intensified pressure on the current leadership.
Despite not holding a parliamentary seat, Mr Burnham has emerged as the preferred choice among both Labour members and the general public to lead the party.
Many Labour MPs attribute the by-election defeat to Sir Keir's decision to prevent Mr Burnham from standing as the party's candidate.
Polling data from Lord Ashcroft, shared with the Daily Mail, reveals that 44 per cent of voters believe the Prime Minister should step down following the by-election loss, compared to just 34 per cent who think he should remain.

Labour’s Andy Burnham has won a special election for a seat in Parliament, positioning him to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer
LONDON --Labour’sAndy Burnham, the current mayor of Greater Manchester, has won a special election for a seat in Parliament that puts him in a position to challenge embattled Prime MinisterKeir Starmerfor leadership of the country.
Burnham decisively won the seat of Makerfield in northwest England over Rob Kenyon of the anti-immigration partyReform UK.
The victory announced early Friday cements the status of Burnham, a 56-year-old politician nicknamed the King of the North, as the top contender to replace Starmer as leader of the Labour Party and the country. Burnham won almost 55% of the 45,510 votes counted, over 9,000 more than Kenyon.
Burnham’s victory speech left no doubt that he wants to lead the country, and not just be one of the more than 400 Labour lawmakers in the 650-seat House of Commons.
“Everyone knows that politics isn’t working," he said. "Everyone can feel that the country isn’t where it should be. Tonight could, just could, be the turning point.”

Burnham, a former government minister who has been Greater Manchester mayor since 2017, ensured his return to parliament by easily beating the hard-right Reform UK party’s candidate in the Makerfield constituency in northwest England.
The 56-year-old longtime figure in centre-left Labour wants to replace Starmer as party leader and prime minister, and needed to win the high-stakes vote to be in a position to trigger such a contest.
If Starmer does leave office this year, then Britain will get its seventh prime minister in 10 years.
“I do say to my own party, this is a final chance to change,” Burnham said in his acceptance speech after securing nearly 55 percent of the vote, beating Reform’s Robert Kenyon by more than 9,000 ballots. Turnout was a historically high 59 percent.
“We must get it right,” he added, saying his victory could be a “turning point” for the country.

His remedy for the UK’s ills also stand in marked contrast to the man who he will replace in 10 Downing Street in less than a month’s time.
Burnham was clear that he wants nothing less than the complete “rewiring” of the way Britain is run, with a huge shift of power away from Westminster to local communities and regions across England.
That, he said, would lead to the biggest council house building programme since the post-war period, economic growth “in every postcode”, lower energy bills and prices coming down in the shops.

UK Prime Minister
Keir Starmer
faces a fight for his premiership after former Manchester mayor Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election on Thursday, returning him to parliament and allowing him to stand for leader of the Labour Party.
Starmer has been on the ropes for a while. Many thought he would go after the
Peter Mandelson
scandal earlier this year, when sordid details emerged about the now-former ambassador to the
US
, an ally of the prime minister and his friendship with financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Labour also suffered stunning
losses
in May's local elections, not least in traditional strongholds in northern England and London.
But Starmer clung on. No one wanted to replace him before the local elections, sources in the Labour Party told Middle East Eye.
Now, less than two years after his landslide general election victory, the prime minister faces two main challengers: Burnham and former Health Secretary Wes Streeting.

The Prime Minister is expected to fight Andy Burnham if a Labour leadership contest is triggered
Nigel Farage's Reform UK is gearing up for an early general election after Andy Burnham confirmed his plot to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the Labour leadership, a senior insider has told GB News.
Mr Burnham, who is standing as Labour's candidate in Makerfield on June 18, has been accused of using the by-election as a "stepping stone" to get the keys to No10.
The Greater Manchester Mayor publicly revealed he intends to enter his third Labour leadership race if voters return him to Westminster for the first time since he resigned as the MP of nearby Leigh in 2017.
However, Reform UK now believes it must prepare for an early general election after Mr Farage claimed a snap poll would be needed if Sir Keir is defeated in a leadership challenge.

The UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer has insisted he will fight to stay in his role if a leadership challenge is launched by Andy Burnham.
The Prime Minister, who has insisted he will not quit and will fight any leadership challenge, praised his rival’s victory, writing on social media: “Congratulations, @AndyBurnhamGM, Labour’s new MP for Makerfield. Voters chose Labour’s campaign of hope and optimism over division and hate.”

Britain has a new
prime minister in waiting. Andy Burnham has wanted to lead the Labour Party for more than a decade, and now the deep unpopularity of the incumbent, Keir Starmer, has created a path to Downing Street for the Manchester mayor. Yesterday in Makerfield, a constituency outside Manchester in northern England, Burnham won a special parliamentary election that basically everyone understood to be both a referendum on Starmer’s leadership and a test of his own ability to defeat the radical right.
He won the by-election in a blowout, and is expected to challenge Starmer almost immediately—by pressuring him behind the scenes to resign or, failing that, by triggering a leadership contest. Either way, Burnham is highly likely to come out on top. The question for Britain is whether his easygoing charm and gift for communication will be enough to successfully lead a grumpy, stagnant country that has already had six prime ministers since the Brexit referendum in 2016.

Two years after a landslide victory,
Starmer is the least popular British leader on record
