UNITED KINGDOM expressed intent to cooperate in United Kingdom
Allies of Sir Keir Starmer believe he is preparing to step down after facing an evaporation of support over the weekend.
A senior government figure toldThe Telegraphthe embattled prime minister was realising that the “game is up” and his thoughts were turning to how he could “shore up his legacy”.
They said there had been “quite a bit of movement” among Cabinet ministers since Andy Burnham’s Makerfield by-election victory, leading Starmer to reconsider his previous commitment to soldiering on.
One Labour MP, who is usually considered to be a loyalist to the prime minister, said he believed Starmer would announce his departure date as soon as Monday, given that his support among MPs was now down to only a handful of “friends and family”.
“There’s no one left. Literally people whose relatives work in No. 10 or people who are long-term personal friends of Starmer’s are pretty much the only ones left,” they said, adding that trying to stand in the way of Burnham’s path to Downing Street was “like trying to fight gravity”.
One government figure predicted that “something will have happened by the end of the week”, warning that if Starmer did not resign “we could end up in mass resig…

admitted he has “got to turn things around” if he is going to remain in post and lead UK Labour into the next general election.
His fragile authority has suffered a further blow with the resignation of defence secretary John Healey and armed forces minister Al Carns over long-delayed defence investment plan.
The prime minister insisted defence spending was a priority and he had taken the “difficult decisions” necessary to keep the country safe.
The timing of the resignations of Healey and Carns, along with two ministerial aides, comes at a moment of peril for Keir whose premiership has looked precarious since May’s election results across England, Wales and Scotland.

UK PM Starmer resigns as Britain faces its seventh leader in 10 years
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will stand down as Labour leader and prime minister, ending months of political turmoil and opening a contest to replace him.
The announcement follows mounting pressure on the prime minister after Laboursuffered heavy lossesin local elections in May and faced an increasingly vocal rebellion from his own lawmakers over his leadership and policy agenda.
The move comes less than two years after Starmer led Labour to one of its largest parliamentary majorities in the 2024 general election.
In a statement outside 10 Downing Street shortly after 9:30 a.m. in London, Starmer said he would remain in his post until any leadership contest is completed, which he said would help ensure an orderly handover of power.
Labour's former Greater Manchester mayor, Andy Burnham, won a decisive victoryin a special election on June 18, potentially setting up a challenge for the party's leadership and, by extension, the U.K.'s premiership.
In a short speech, a visibly emotional Starmer said that entering 10 Downing Street had been the "proudest moment of my life," adding tha…

London
– British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was considering his political future on June 20, after rival Andy Burnham’s decisive election victory to Parliament prompted more ministers in the governing Labour Party to call for him to go.
Struggling with some of the lowest popularity ratings for any British leader, Starmer could decide as soon as June 22 whether to step aside or fight a leadership contest against Burnham, one source said.
The scale of victory Burnham won for a parliamentary seat in northwestern England on June 19 has piled pressure on Starmer, with dozens of lawmakers and some government ministers privately calling for him to set out a timetable for his departure to clear the way for the former mayor.
A source with knowledge of the matter said Starmer was spending the weekend thinking about and discussing his position with his family but that an expected conversation with Burnham would clarify matters.

Sir Keir Starmer is reflecting on the “political realities” he now faces, a Cabinet minister said as he failed to rule out the possibility the Prime Minister could resign.
The Prime Minister vowed not to walk away from his post on Friday, in the immediate aftermath of Andy Burnham winning the Makerfield by-election, but pressure has been mounting over the weekend.
The number of Labour MPs calling for Sir Keir to go has since topped 100 – just under a quarter of the party’s MPs – and includes some who signed a letter warning against a leadership contest just last month.
Labour grandees have also spoken out, with former home secretary Alan Johnson saying Sir Keir should step aside and Lord Falconer saying he has “no authority” because it is assumed he will be replaced.
The Prime Minister is understood to be at Chequers with his wife this weekend.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle told broadcasters on Sunday he had not spoken to the Prime Minister since Friday, when he had a “frank conversation” with him.

Tears, then tea: How Starmer's dramatic resignation unfolded
LONDON — The Keir Starmer era is over. And Andy Burnham is preparing for power within weeks.
Britain — heading for its seventh leader in a decade — has become used to the familiar spectacle of prime ministerial resignations. But the speed of events Monday still shocked even seasoned observers.
Assuming no-one else can muster the 81 MP nominations required to launch a Labour leadership bid, Burnham — the popular former mayor of Greater Manchester who found a path back to parliament through
a decisive special election win
late last week — will now walk to a Labour coronation on 17 or 18 July.

That’s right after parliament closes for recess. If there is a contest, the new PM is expected to be in post once parliament returns on September 1.
Starmer’s resignation Monday capped days of intense deliberations, and months of turmoil in his governing Labour Party, which is tanking in the national polls less than two years after winning an election landslide and desperately looking for a way to turn things around.

U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to set out a timetable for his departure on Monday, reports suggest, kickstarting a process that will see the country appoint its seventh leader in a decade.
Andy Burnham, Labour's former Greater Manchester Mayor, is favorite to replace Starmer after winning a special election in north-west England last week that will see him return to parliament.
Following that result, Starmer had initially vowed to fight any leadership challenge. However, speculation that Starmer may now quit mounted over the weekend.
A number of senior U.K. government ministers have reportedly urged the prime minister to spell out an exit plan, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Energy Minister Ed Miliband.
A heavy defeat in last month's local elections, coupled with sustained poor opinion polling, has steadily eroded the prime minister's authority over the ruling Labour Party.

LONDON — A top ally to Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain refused on Sunday to repeat Starmer’s promise to fight any challenge to his leadership of the Labour Party, a notable shift in tone over whether the prime minister would step aside.
That ally, Peter Kyle, the government’s business secretary and a close friend of the prime minister’s, told the BBC that Starmer was “taking the time to think through what the political realities are today compared to last week.”
He added that Starmer was “making time this weekend to try and reflect on the political challenges that he faces” and that the prime minister would “put the country first.”

Starmer reflecting on ‘political realities’ amid pressure to resign
Sir Keir Starmer is reflecting on the “political realities” he now faces, a Cabinet minister said as he failed to rule out the possibility the
Prime Minister
could resign.
In a clear sign that Sir Keir is weighing his future, his Business Secretary did not shut down multiple reports that he could set out a timetable for his departure as soon as Monday.
The Prime Minister vowed not to walk away from his post on Friday, in the immediate aftermath of
Andy Burnham
winning the Makerfield by-election, but pressure has been mounting over the weekend.
The number of
Labour
MPs
calling for Sir Keir to go has since topped 100 – just under a quarter of the party’s MPs – and includes some who signed a letter warning against a leadership contest just last month.
Labour grandees have also spoken out, with former home secretary Alan Johnson saying Sir Keir should step aside and Lord Falconer saying he has “no authority” because it is assumed he will be replaced by Mr Burnham.
And US President Donald Trump posted online on Sunday that “Keir Starmer will resign”, saying he “failed badly” on energy and immigration, and adding “I wis…

A clear majority of Keir Starmer’s cabinet believe it is now inevitable Andy Burnham will take over as prime minister, according to people familiar with the thinking of more than 15 cabinet ministers, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Friday.
However, as of late in the afternoon, most remained unwilling to do anything about it. Most the cabinet was still not ready to tell Starmer to set out a timetable for his departure, the people said, preferring to wait and see how developments...

Why Starmer is facing fresh pressure to exit after Labour rival Andy Burnham’s victory
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces intense pressure following Andy Burnham's return to Parliament, sparking leadership challenge speculation. Despite denials from senior ministers, Starmer is reportedly reflecting on his position amid Labour's recent electoral setbacks and declining approval. Burnham has signaled his ambition, warning the party needs a "final chance to change." Starmer, however, vows to contest any leadership bid, insisting he will not step aside voluntarily.

Keir Starmer
is understood to be discussing a plan to handover the Labour leadership to Andy Burnham in September amid a growing belief that he will announce his timetable for departure on Monday.
The former Greater Manchester mayor
is understood to want to wait to become prime minister until September and a delay would, according to a source, “allow the prime minister to secure his legacy.” The source said that the
prime minister
is now “working towards” a handover.
But a deal would be dependent on Mr Burnham also securing a deal with
Wes Streeting
who has made it clear he wants to run for the leadership as well.
A number of Labour MPs are concerned that a September handover will provide more delay and uncertainty.
One backbencher said: “Three more months of incapacitated government to go with the five months we've already had building up to this point. The Labour Party doesn't understand the nature or realities of power.”
The revelation came after tech secretary Peter Kyle confirmed that Sir Keir is considering resigning as he spends the weekend “thinking through the political realities” of his situation.

UNITED KINGDOM expressed intent to cooperate UNITED KINGDOM in United Kingdom

Starmer is expected to resign on Monday, but sources close to him say he remains focused on the job.

The Observer reported that Starmer is discussing his political future with his wife, Victoria, before he lays out a timetable for his exit from 10 Downing St. next week.
The news comes after Starmer’s rival, Andy Burnham, won a seat in Parliament in a by-election in Greater Manchester.
A senior UK government source told Reuters Starmer is focused on his job—and that the prime minister isn’t going anywhere.

Burnham, who has stood twice before for the Labour leadership, is said to have the backing of more than half of Labour MPs to mount a leadership challenge to Starmer, the publication said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces resignation
London
— British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he was resigning from his position as the leader of the ruling Labour Party, which will also see him replaced as the country's leader.
Starmer has been under mounting pressure to resign for weeks, and his decision came after a political rival from within Labour, former Manchester Mayor
Andy Burnham, made it clear that he would challenge
the prime minister for his job.
Starmer had
vowed to stay in his post
, but his position became untenable as more and more Labour Party colleagues concluded his time was up. The timetable for his departure sped up after Burnham left his role as mayor and then won a seat last week as a Member of Parliament for his local constituency — a necessary move as prime ministers have long been chosen from among sitting members of the House of Commons.

UK PM Starmer resigns as Britain faces its seventh leader in 10 years
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that he will stand down as Labour leader and prime minster, ending months of political turmoil and opening a contest to replace him.
In a statement outside 10 Downing Street shortly after 9:30 a.m. in London, Starmer said he would remain in post until any leadership contest is completed, which he said would help ensure an orderly handover of power.

Keir Starmer has reportedly told close allies that he plans to step down as Prime Minister and outline a formal timetable for his departure from Downing Street.
According to senior Cabinet sources, Starmer has privately accepted that the current political turmoil engulfing his leadership cannot continue indefinitely. One Cabinet minister claimed the Prime Minister now wants to manage his exit “with dignity” and on his own terms, rather than being forced out by events.
However, there is still disagreement inside Government over exactly when any announcement should come. Some of Starmer’s remaining allies are said to be urging him to delay any decision until polling and canvassing data from the upcoming Makerfield by-election is returned.
Former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney is reportedly among those encouraging Starmer to hold on, arguing that if Andy Burnham struggles in the contest or the race appears close, there could still be a route back for the Prime Minister politically.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing the gravest threat to his leadership since leading Labour to a landslide election victory in 2024, with reports suggesting he could announce his resignation as early as Monday.
According to Britain's Observer newspaper, Starmer was expected to resign and outline a timetable for his exit. However, a government source, cited by Reuters, pushed back against the speculation, saying the prime minister remained focused on governing.
The Observer's report said Starmer was discussing his future with his wife at the Chequers country residence before making a final decision. Senior Labour figures were said to be expecting a clear statement on his intentions in the coming days.
Starmer, however, struck a defiant tone on Friday, saying he would fight any challenge to his leadership and urging Labour not to descend into infighting.
According to a Reuters report, UK business minister Peter Kyle dismissed reports that Starmer plans to resign on Monday, saying he has "nothing" to suggest the claim is true.

fight a challenge
from Labour Party rival
Andy Burnham
.
Starmer has publicly vowed to stay in post, but pressure is building as more and more Labour Party colleagues conclude his time is up. Business Secretary Peter Kyle said Sunday that Starmer is “making time to reflect on the political realities, challenges and opportunities that he finds himself in.”
“I know he is a prime minister who always puts his country first,” Kyle told the BBC, though he said reports that Starmer will resign are “speculation.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke in front of 10 Downing Street on Monday.
LONDON -- Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday he would resign as the leader of his party and as prime minister, setting the stage for the United Kingdom's seventh prime minister within a decade.
"The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election," he said outside 10 Downing Street. "I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace."
Starmer, who had lead the Labour Party since 2020, was elected in 2024. A formal challenge to Starmer's premiership had not yet begun as of Monday, but members of his party have in recent weeks pointed to Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, as his potential successor.
Burnham, who won a special election on Friday to become a member of parliament representing Makerfield, was expected to be sworn in in the House of Commons on Monday.
