Andy Burnham won a by‑election that gives him the right to launch a formal leadership challenge to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. At the same time, pressure within the Labour Party is mounting for Starmer to resign.

Starmer said he would not step aside and would fight any leadership challenge, adding that he was reflecting on the “political realities” facing his leadership.

Multiple reports say Starmer is expected to resign on Monday or soon thereafter.

According to the New York Post, Starmer announced on Monday that he will resign as Prime Minister. Al Arabiya cited a government source saying Starmer remained focused on his job. TASS reported that Starmer said he has no plans to step down. Deutsche Welle quoted a senior minister describing it as “delusional” to pretend there was no threat to Starmer’s position. GDELT reported that Starmer’s support among MPs had been reduced to only a handful of “friends and family”.
