Executive summary
Since the 2016 Brexit vote Nigel Farage moved from being the movement’s chief agitator to a persistent power-broker: he stepped back into frontline politics by returning to lead Reform UK, won a Commons seat at Clacton in 2024, and has spent the years since building Reform into a national force that is reshaping UK political debate and electoral math[1][2][3].
1. Return to frontline politics and an MP at last
After years as a media figurehead and party elder, Farage accepted Richard Tice’s invitation to resume leadership of Reform UK in June 2024 and stood successfully for Parliament in Clacton, finally converting decades of activism into a seat in the House of Commons[1][2].
2. Turning a protest movement into a governing ambition
Farage has overseen Reform’s evolution from a niche eurosceptic vehicle into a party with explicit ambitions to govern: journalists and analysts note that Reform now presides over a national organisation with realistic hopes of winning a parliamentary majority at the next general election — a prospect he and aides openly court[3][4].

Nigel Farage said Reform UK would “gladly” accept further donations from billionaire backer Christopher Harborne, who has registered to vote in the UK.
The British-Thai crypto businessman gave £5 million to Mr Farage in the run up to the 2024 general election, before he announced he would stand as an MP in the poll.
Mr Farage is currently being investigated by Parliament’s standards commissioner over the gift, which critics say he should have declared.

Labour has accused Nigel Farage of trying to hide a “property empire” from the public and dubbed the Reform UK leader “five-homes Farage” after questions were raised about how he has declared his real estate holdings.
It comes after a report that the Reform UK leader and his partner have amassed a mortgage-free property portfolio worth more than £4 million between them over the past decade.
The MP’s register of interests shows two properties declared under “land and property”- one in Folkestone and Hythe in Kent and another in Tandridge, Surrey.
Mr Farage also spends time at a home in his Clacton constituency that he initially suggested he had bought, but it later emerged his partner was listed as the sole owner, which means he is not obliged to declare …

Robert Jenrick said “no rules have been broken” over Nigel Farage receiving financial support from a convicted criminal because it was “before he became a member of Parliament”.
Long-time aide George Cottrell provided funding for the Reform UK leader’s operation, including for staffing, security and housing, according to The Sunday Times.
The newspaper said Cottrell recruited and paid three staff to work on Mr Farage’s social media before the general election, and has continued to allow him to use a five-storey Georgian townhouse he rented near Buckingham Palace.
Under rules in place at the time, new MPs were required to register any gifts worth more than £300 they received in the previous 12 months, except where the gift “could not be reasonably thought by others” to rel…

Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage said he was “disappointed” with the party’s vote share in the Makerfield by-election and urged people who voted for rival party Restore Britain to “think again”.
Reform’s candidate Robert Kenyon came second to Andy Burnham, who had a majority of 9,231 votes over his nearest opponent.
Mr Burnham’s vote share was also higher than the figure achieved by his predecessor Josh Simons at the 2024 general election, which was 45.2%.
More voters backed Labour candidate Mr Burnham in the poll than the combined number who voted for Mr Farage’s party and Restore Britain, a rival party to the right of Reform which has adopted a harder line on migration and other issues.

Nigel Farage, leader of the populist right-wing Reform UK party, has resigned from parliament and will stand for his seat again in a special election, amid mounting controversy over financial donations.
Farage announced the decision on his YouTube channel Tuesday to resign as a member of parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, his constituency in Essex, in order to force a by-election in which he will run again.
The surprise move appears to be an attempt to tackle recent negative press reports regarding the source of his personal wealth, which is also the subject of an investigation by parliament’s standards watchdog. The probe will be suspended until he is re-elected. If he loses the by-election, the standards commissioner will decide whether or not to resume the investigation, according to
official protocol

Nigel Farage has said Reform UK is “unapologetic” about its candidate in the Makerfield by-election Robert Kenyon, who made offensive remarks on social media in the past.
Mr Kenyon, who is standing against Labour’s Andy Burnham in the June 18 contest, used a now-deleted X account to support an offensive post about Welsh broadcaster Carol Vorderman.
Messages published by campaign group Hope Not Hate showed that Mr Kenyon responded on Christmas Eve 2021 to another person’s post including graphic sexual language about the presenter who made her name as the maths expert on Channel 4’s Countdown.
Alongside a thumbs up and a laughing emoji, the plumber wrote: “He’s only saying what we’re all thinking.”

Parties refusing to stand against Nigel Farage in the Clacton by-election are missing a chance to “knock him out the ring”, the leader of his party in Scotland has claimed.
Mr Farage announced on Tuesday he would resign from his seat and stand in the subsequent by-election following intense scrutiny of support and gifts he has received.
Within hours of the announcement, the major parties said they would not field a candidate in the seat, leaving the only current challenger to be perennial joke candidate Count Binface.
Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, Malcolm Offord – the leader of Mr Farage’s Reform UK in Scotland – said mainstream parties are scared to take on the soon-to-be-former Clacton MP.
“What does that tell you about who he’s up against?” Lord Offord said.

Nigel Farage has formally quit as an MP after Chancellor Rachel Reeves agreed to his request so he can “spend the summer arguing with a bin”.

Nigel Farage wants the by-election in Clacton to take place on the earliest date possible, on August 6.
Reform UK said it will propose that date when it launches the parliamentary process to trigger the contest on Thursday.
However, it is unclear whether it can happen that soon, as the House of Commons library sets out that a by-election cannot take place for at least 21 working days after a writ is issued, with this Friday counting as day one.

A by-election triggered by Nigel Farage is a stunt that “shouldn’t be happening” and disrespects the people of Clacton, a senior minister has said, as the prospect of the contest appeared to fall flat.
The Reform UK leader has announced he plans to trigger an election in his Clacton seat, in what he dubbed a “people versus the establishment” fight, as he faces close scrutiny over gifts and support he has received.

Much like his ally, US President Donald Trump,
Nigel Farage
has enjoyed a political career seemingly coated in Teflon, his straight-talking, combative communication style brushing off any potential scandal.
Throughout his rise to become the voice of Britain’s populist hard-right, architect of Brexit and chief anti-immigrant activist, any accusations of wrongdoing have largely glided off him.
Reform UK
, his populist party, leads most national opinion polls, giving it an outsized influence on British politics given that only eight of the country’s 650 lawmakers belong to the party.
But, in recent weeks, that momentum has stalled.
While Reform enjoyed huge gains in May’s local elections, which don’t affect the make-up of the national government but provide important insights into the public’s mood, transla…

The former chairman of Reform UK has suggested thatNigel Farageshould 'take some time out' and 'have a bit of a break' from the stress of leading a major party.
Dr David Bull, who served as the party's chairman until May, issued a warning this morning that the man topping the polls should take a step back from the 'ruthless business' of politics.
Speaking onChannel 5this morning, Mr Bull also warned that Reform is 'way bigger than Nigel'.
He said: 'I've been there since the beginning with Richard Tice, for example. I'm very proud of what we've done, and what we're now doing is professionalising the party.
'The party is bigger than Nigel, the party is way bigger than Nigel.
'Politics is a ruthless business, and I think also one of the other things I would say to [Farage] as a friend and a colleague is he needs to take some time out and have a bit of a break, really.'

Nigel Farage needs to “level with the public” about financial support given to him by a convicted criminal, Labour has said.
The Reform UK leader is facing intense scrutiny over the support given to him by long-term associate George Cottrell, which included funding for staffing, security and the use of a London townhouse, according to The Sunday Times.
Mr Farage has claimed he is the victim of an “establishment hit job” and insisted he had committed “no wrongdoing”.
But chairwoman of the Labour Party Anna Turley urged Mr Farage to stop “blaming the media” and answer questions about the support from Mr Cottrell.
Nigel Farage must come out of hiding and level with the public. It's time he stopped blaming the media and took responsibility for his actions
The Cabinet minister and Redcar MP said: “Reform’s excuses for the scandals engulfing Nigel Farage are getting pathetically weak. His top team must be wondering how many more times they will be wheeled out to defend the indefensible only for the rap sheet against him to grow just hours…

In the end it wasn’t even close.
After a campaign in which the British press focused relentlessly on the question of whether or not Rupert Lowe and the far-right would somehow “gift” the result to Labour, Andy Burnham won the Makerfield by-election by a massive majority of over 20 points.
The result marks not just a clear rejection of the politics of “pure cold rage” called for by Nigel Farage during the campaign, but also a rejection of the cosy media consensus that his party is somehow inevitably heading for Government.
In reality Reform’s heavy defeat in Makerfield is the third time in recent months that Farage’s party has lost what should have been an incredibly winnable by-election to other parties of the centre and left.
In Caerphilly, Gorton and Denton and now Makerfield, Reform sought to exploit the politics of hatred, division and race and were roundly…

Nigel Farage has resigned as an MP. The Reform leader made the sensational announcement today in a statement broadcast shortly after 2pm. In a video statement, Mr Farage said he would stand down as Clacton MP - and stand again in the subsequent by-election.
It comes as Mr Farage faces intense scrutiny over financial support given to him by a convicted fraudster, and a previous £5 million gift from a Reform UK donor.
In the video statement, he accused the media of harassment and vowed to fight a “people versus the establishment” by-election. He claimed standards investigations by the parliamentary authorities are “now being used as a political tool”.

But Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain have all said they will not stand candidates in the poll.
Satirical candidate Count Binface appears to be Mr Farage’s main electoral rival so far.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper was asked by BBC Breakfast why Labour is not standing a candidate.
She told the broadcaster: “Well, look, the…

Nigel Farage
has triggered a frenzy of speculation that he could quit as
Reform UK
leader.
He posted on X that he would be making
a statement at 2pm on Tuesday on his future in public life.
The move stunned Westminster as Reform is still leading in the polls and Mr Farage has only recently been talking up the prospects of him being Prime Minister after his party’s success in the May local elections.
But Mr Farage has faced a growing barrage of questions over financial support he has received.
He has denied any wrongdoing.
Other factors which could push him into stepping aside are rumours of ill-health.
Mr Farage has for years also strongly defended the privacy of his family and is believed to have been infuriated by what he sees as media intrusion on at least one of his children.
The combination of factors may have led the Reform leader to decide to bow out of public life, though, exactly what he…

Nigel Farage has said he will be making a statement on his "future in public life" this afternoon (Tuesday, July 7).
It comes as the Reform UK leader has faced increased scrutiny over financial support given to him by a convicted fraudster.
Reports have said that the Essex MP's long-term ally, George Cottrell, had provided funding for security and staffing in the year before he was elected.
Mr Cottrell was jailed for eight months in the US in 2017 after pleading guilty to a charge of wire fraud
The elections watchdog has been urged to investigate Mr Farage over the claims.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced he will quit as an MP to fight a “people versus the establishment” by-election in protest at the intense scrutiny over unregistered donations of cash and support to him.
The Clacton MP insisted he had done nothing wrong as he accused Westminster opponents of using sleaze investigations as a “political tool” and the media of “haranguing” his family.

The hard-right Reform UK party led by
Nigel Farage
has surged in England’s local elections while the governing Labour Party has slumped, deepening doubts about Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s ability to govern and further splintering Britain’s traditional two-party political system.
Results announced early Friday showed that the Reform party of Farage – a chief architect of Brexit and an ally of US President Donald Trump – had gained more than 600 seats, while Labour had lost more than 450. The Conservative Party – the other half of the duopoly that has dominated British politics for more than a century – lost nearly 300 seats.
“Labour are being wiped out by Reform in many of their most traditional areas, and what you’re going to see later on today is the Conservative Party being wiped out in their heartlands,” Farage told reporters Friday morning, as some cou…

Reform UK has “fully” backed its candidate in the Makerfield by-election amid criticism of his social media posts about Russia’s invasion of Crimea and the Covid pandemic.
Robert Kenyon, a Wigan councillor who also contested the seat for Reform in 2024, is reported to have said that
Russia
was “within their rights” to invade Crimea and questioned the seriousness of Covid and the efficacy of vaccines.

A Reform spokesman said Mr Kenyon had made his comments before entering politics.

The spokesman said: “We fully back Cllr Kenyon. He is an excellent, local candidate who we are confident will be a superb MP for Makerfield.”
On Wednesday evening, the Daily Telegraph reported that Mr Kenyon had replied to a forum post shortly after Russia’s invasion of Crimea in 2014 that claimed: “The people of Crimea want to be in Russia, for me that is democracy in action.”
In response, Mr Kenyon said: “I agree totally, Russia are…

Nigel Farage
has dramatically quit as an MP to trigger a by-election in his Clacton seat.
The
Reform UK
leader made the shock announcement amid the mounting furore over his personal finances.
Farage has been under pressure since it emerged in April that he had received a £5 million gift from Thailand-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne shortly before he became an MP.

Daniel Greenberg, the parliamentary commissioner for standards, is carrying out a probe into whether Farage should have declared it – and could recommend he be suspended from the Commons.
By taking matters into his own hands, the Reform boss may be trying to get ahead of the investigation by attempting to secure a fresh mandate from voters in Clacton, who elected him with a majority of 8,400 at the last general election.
Greenberg has also been urged to investigate the financial support Farage accepted from convicted criminal George Cottrell before be entered parl…

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage announced he will quit as an MP and fight a by-election after coming under intense pressure over unregistered donations of cash and support.
In a video statement, Clacton MP Mr Farage said: “I have done nothing wrong. I have not broken the law in any way at all.”
He accused the media of harassment and vowed to fight a “people versus the establishment” by-election.
The Reform UK leader has faced calls for an investigation following reports that long-term ally George Cottrell had provided undeclared funding for security and staffing in the year before he was elected.
Mr Cottrell reportedly recruited and paid three staff to work on Mr Farage’s social media before the general election, and has continued to allow him to use a five-storey Georgian property he rented n…

Nigel Farage’s attempt to fight a “people versus the establishment” by-election risks falling flat, with the major parties saying they will not contest the vote he has triggered.
The Reform UK leader said he would quit as an MP on Tuesday as he came under further scrutiny over his finances, saying that the voters in Clacton “should be the judges of my actions”.
Mr Farage said: “This will be a people versus the establishment by-election. It’s a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire Establishment to frankly tell them where to go, and that is why I will be putting my name forward to stand in this by-election.”
But Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and Rupert Lowe’s R…

Reform knew of Makerfield candidate's deleted accounts ... - POLITICO
LONDON — Reform UK was aware of the controversial deleted social media accounts of its Makerfield by-election candidate Robert Kenyon before choosing him to stand against Andy Burnham, the party has confirmed.
A series of posts from social media accounts have dominated coverage of Kenyon’s race since his selection last week — including remarks condemned as misogynistic, the resharing of comments by far-right influencers and a claim he did not support Farage’s flagship policy of Brexit.
In a statement
to POLITICO a Reform spokesperson said: “Rob declared his accounts during the vetting process as everyone is expected to. The party has fully backed him as our candidate for Makerfield.”

Reform UK has previously made clear it has no plans to investigate Kenyon.
Kenyon, a self-employed plumber and Wigan councillor born in the constituency, has defended himself as an ordinary person
who is
“

.” He told the Sunday Times newspaper he was “a regular, normal bloke and I speak like a normal bloke does,” and claimed “dragging up” comments “puts people off getting involved in politics.”

Donald Trump appeared to indicate his backing for Nigel Farage as the Reform UK leader continues to face intense scrutiny over financial support given to him by a convicted criminal.
The Clacton MP claimed he was the victim of an “establishment hit job” and has “done no wrongdoing” after The Sunday Times reported George Cottrell had provided funding for security and staffing in the year before he was elected.
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Monday, the US President shared a link to an article on The National Pulse website titled They’re Running the 2024 Anti-Trump Playbook on Nigel Farage.
Under rules in place at the time of Mr Farage’s election in 2024, new MPs were required to register any gifts worth more than £300 they received in the previous 12 months, except where the gift “could not be reasonably t…

Labour has accused Reform UK of taking the public “for fools” amid further questions about the party’s financial affairs.
Anna Turley, the Labour chairwoman, said there were “legitimate questions” for Reform leader Nigel Farage following reports in The Times that the Metropolitan Police has been investigating £500,000 donations to Reform UK for more than a year.
According to the newspaper, officers opened an inquiry into possible offences related to evading restrictions on donations at the 2024 election, either through concealing donations from an “impermissible” donor or using false information about a donation.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said the force had opened an inquiry in February 2025 following a referral by the Elect…

Nigel Farage has confirmed this afternoon that he is resigning as an MP, triggering a by-election in his constituency of Clacton-on-Sea - which he will stand in.
The Reform UK leader gave a sudden speech this afternoon, billed to be about 'his future in public life' where he addressed the
financial controversies
currently surrounding him. Announcing his resignation he said the "people of Clacton should be the judges of my actions."

I will fight to continue the political revolution that Reform has started, and I would say this to you, the voters of Clacton, if I win, you win, because if I lose, they win, and we will never with the two old parties get the type of …
