JERUSALEM, Israel: Benjamin Netanyahu believed that fighting a war together with Donald Trump would bring down Iran's religious leadership and strengthen his position before elections, but instead, he is now heading toward a clash with Trump, who wants to pull the U.S. out of the war.
Neither of their goals has been achieved, and Israeli forces are still tied up in Lebanon.
For now, Israeli officials are speaking carefully in public so they don't upset their most important ally, who is known to react strongly to criticism. But privately, they are clearly frustrated. One senior Israeli official said the early deal is "terrible for Israel," and added that everyone in the leadership, from the prime minister to the army chief, feels the same way.
The U.S. says that during a 60-day ceasefire, it will work out a full agreement that addresses concerns, especially about Iran's nuclear program. However, Israeli officials believe these talks could drag on, limiting Israel's ability to act militarily while its concerns remain unresolved.
Netanyahu and Trump have also argued over Israel's refusal to limit its attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, which Iran w…

Tel Aviv, Israel; and Washington
With a new war with Iran in its second week, and Israeli political and military leaders counseling patience among Israelis, what the government’s actual war aims are and whether they are attainable remain elusive.
In contrast with President Donald Trump’s zig-zagging on exactly why he decided to send the United States to war against Iran alongside Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s messaging has remained fixated on regime change in Iran since Day 1.
The U.S.-Israeli attack “will create the conditions for the brave Iranian people [to] rid themselves of the yoke of tyranny,” Mr. Netanyahu declared at the war’s outset. On Tuesday, he addressed Iranians directly on X, urging them: “Be ready to seize the moment…

The Islamic Republic of Iran said it would stop its negotiations with the U.S. unless Israel stopped fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon. U.S. President Donald Trump, who claims he has all the time in the world to negotiate, is in fact desperate to reach an agreement with Iran that will lead to a resumption of ship traffic through the strait of Hormuz, which the President hopes will lead to a steep drop in the price of oil, and hence of gasoline at the pump, just in time to affect the midterm elections. So Trump, eager to win Tehran’s favor by saving its proxy Hezbollah from the IDF — that has just launched its deepest assault into Lebanon in the last 25 years — has just given his marching, or rather unmarching orders, to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding that he call off the IDF’s assault on Beirut. More on Trump’s demand, and Netanyahu’s response, can be found here: “Trump declares Lebanon ceasefire, calls off IDF strike…

Benjamin Netanyahu has spent the better part of two decades perfecting the art of the political escape. Just when his career appears to be buried under the weight of indictments, or his coalition fatally fractured, he reappears, seemingly unscathed, with a new lease on power. Today, as Israel finds itself locked in a multifront war with Iran and its proxies, Netanyahu is once again attempting his favorite trick: transmuting a national existential crisis into a personal political lifeline.
Take the prime minister’s perennial quest to call off his corruption trial. Netanyahu has been in the dock for bribery, fraud, and breach of trust since 2020. During that time, he has attempted to
intimidate
and
disempower
Israel’s judiciary and pressured Isaac Herzog, the country’s president, to

. Last week, thanks to the Iran war, that push got some backup from none other than Donald Trump. “I don’t want anything on Bibi’s mind other than fighting against Iran,” the U.S. president
told
Axios

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israelis from across the political spectrum reacted angrily Monday to the news of aninitial deal between the U.S. and Iran, calling it a disaster for Israel and directing their fury at one man: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli leader said at a news conference Monday that “with an agreement, without an agreement,” he would continue fighting to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, which Tehran has long maintained it isn’t trying to do, sayingits nuclear programis for civilian purposes.
“As long as I am the prime minister of Israel, it will not happen,” Netanyahu said, emphasizing that the deal was struck by the United States, not Israel, and that he didn’t budge on Ira…

Iran war 'has been a strategic disaster for the State of Israel', analyst says
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on a collision course with Donald Trump as the U.S. president seeks to extricate himself from the war, with both men's goals unmet and Israeli military operations tied down in Lebanon. Speaking with FRANCE 24's Sharon Gaffney, Aaron David Miller, Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, says that "this has been a strategic disaster for the state of Israel. All of Benjamin Netanyahu's war aims - diminished support for proxies, restrictions on ballistic missiles, overthrow of the regime, or weakening of the regime - none of this has occurred."

US President Donald Trump surprised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by cancelling planned strikes against Iran and announcing a potential diplomatic deal within days. Trump claimed Iran's leadership approved a draft framework, aiming to extend a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Netanyahu, reportedly caught off guard, had urged continued military pressure, highlighting growing differences over Iran policy.

The emerging agreement between the

to permanently end the war has been met with scepticism and growing alarm in
Israel
.
Reports over the weekend said the deal centres on a memorandum of understanding establishing a preliminary 60-day ceasefire, which reportedly does not address Iran’s nuclear programme.
The initial framework is also said to include ending wars “on all fronts”, including Lebanon.
The reported terms have drawn criticism from US Democrats,
hawkish Republicans
and Israeli commentators alike.
Amid mounting backlash, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that he had agreed with US President Donald Trump that “any final agreement with Iran must eliminate the nuclear threat”.

Trump's Iran deal leaves Netanyahu isolated at home and abroad
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu found himself increasingly isolated on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump formally signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran, a deal that many Israeli officials reportedly view as a strategic setback and one that could force Tel Aviv to halt military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, reported Axios.
While Trump hailed the agreement as a pathway to ending months of conflict in West Asia, Netanyahu remained publicly silent. The deal comes just four months before Israel’s general election and threatens to undermine Netanyahu’s long-standing promise of achieving “total victory” against Iran and its regional allies.
Despite criticism,Axios reported that Netanyahu remains deeply sceptical of the deal and believes the conflict should have continued. The United Arab Emirates, known for its hawkish stance, has joined the consensus amongst other Gulf nations supporting the deal. In Washington, the GOP and media refuse to criticise the agreement. Netanyahu is unable to publicly oppose the accord without risking a direct fight with Trump.

Who’s calling the shots? Netanyahu and Trump at odds over their war
Israel’s latest strikes on Lebanon and Iran have made clear that US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who started the war in lockstep, want different things.
Trump had publicly warned Israel not to strike Beirut in its war with Iran-backed Hezbollah militants. When it did, on Sunday, Iran responded by firing ballistic missiles at Israel for the first time since the April ceasefire. Israel then struck Iran, with which Trump has been engaged in weeks of...

Inside Trump and Netanyahu's Complicated Relationship
Inside Trump and Netanyahu's Complicated Relationship
The frequent calls aren’t so friendly anymore.
As President Trump was trying to broker a permanent end to his war in Iran that has weighed on the U.S. economy and kept gas prices above $4 a gallon, he had choice words for the partner that urged him into it.
“Why are you blowing up buildings?” Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a recent phone call about Lebanon, people familiar with the call said. “Stop blowing up buildings.” In another, he complained that a global downturn sparked by the war could tie him to Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression of the 1930s, the people said.
Trump’s frustration with Netanyahu has boiled over at times in recent weeks as he has tried to end the war with Iran and the Israeli prime minister has sought to keep up the fight. The relationship has major ramifications for a region on the cusp of a potential peace deal, whose future could be undone by further military attacks by Israel.

How does the Iran war end? US and Israeli leaders at odds over priorities
After weeks of US President Donald Trump insisting that a deal with Iran is just around the corner, violence has flared up again. Part of the challenge for Trump is that he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu no longer have the same priorities. Washington wants an out from a war that's roiling oil markets and is increasingly unpopular at home. But Netanyahu faces elections by the end of October and has a criminal investigation hanging over him. His political survival is once again at the heart of his geo-strategic calculations. We take a closer look and get expert analysis in this edition.

Analysis: Netanyahu and Trump on collision course as US, Iran agree to halt war
Benjamin Netanyahu bet that his joint war alongside US President Donald Trump would topple Iran’s clerical rulers and bolster himself ahead of elections at home, as the architect of a US-Israeli alliance that would reshape the Middle East.Instead, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister is on a collision course with Trump as the US president seeks to extricate himself from the war, with both men’s goals unmet and Israeli military operations tied down in Lebanon. For all the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.For now, Israeli officials have been cautious in public for fear of angering their most important ally, known for being prickly towards critics. But in private conversations, the frustration is clear. As of early Monday evening, Netanyahu had yet to release a statement about the deal between the U.S. and Iran that extend their tenuous ceasefire and lead to the reopening of the

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told President Donald Trump
last year
that he was the “greatest friend Israel ever had in the White House."
Now, as Trump tries to finalize a deal to end the war with Iran, he's unloading on Netanyahu with rhetoric that no other American leader has dared to use publicly.
He claimed credit for Israel's existence — “without me, there would be no Israel” — and cursed his judgment in interviews. He even described him as
“crazy.”
Netanyahu’s tenure as prime minister spans four U.S. presidents, and he's frustrated all of them at one point or another. But none has voiced that as openly as Trump, who started the conflict
in tandem with Netanyahu.
The tension comes as Trump criticizes recent Israeli attacks in Lebanon, which threatened to jeopardize negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Trump has been pushing for a deal as he faces political blowback at home, where the war is unpopular and has driven up gasoline prices.

Shortly after
President Donald Trump
said he had given a copy of the MOU to Israel, the same source said Israel still had not seen the draft. The source would not comment on whether Israeli diplomats had asked for the text and were denied it.
The Israeli government’s absence in the negotiations leading up to the MOU has become a perilous hindrance for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces career-defining elections before the end of October. The deal framework was provided to NBC News by a senior U.S. official later on Wednesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pursue diplomacy instead of attacking Iran’s regime in the wake of themajor uprisingthere has sharpened differences between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on major regional issues.Because Netanyahu asserts the right to undertake military action in the region even without specific U.S. approval, U.S. officials assess that they must take Netanyahu’s perspectives into account in formulating strategic policy in the region — and particularly on Iran. The consequences of U.S.-Israeli differences for the region can be stark: in 2025, the U.S. and Iran held five rounds of talks to forge a new nuclear accord, but on the eve of a sixth round, Israel launched a major air campaign against Iran (Operation Rising Lion) that derailed the U.S.-Iran diplomacy. Viewing the Israeli strikes as an opportunity to disable Iran’s nuclear program militarily, and facing perceived Iranian intransigence at the negotiating table, Trump joined the Israeli effort. He ordered Operation Mi…

Netanyahu is working behind the scenes to derail the Iran deal - report ...
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is working to alter the US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU) through back-channel pressure on President Donald Trump, enlisting right-wing media figures and pro-Israel senators to push back on the agreement,
CNN
reported on Thursday.
According to an Israeli source, Netanyahu remains deeply skeptical of Iran's intentions throughout the talks, believing Tehran was never negotiating in good faith, and still assesses there will be no final deal between Washington and Tehran.
With Trump having signed the MoU and triggered a 60-day negotiation window, Netanyahu is now trying to leverage allies in the American media landscape to amplify his message, including pro-Israel podcaster Mark Levin, who said this week that the deal "doesn't make any sense" and called the proposed $300 billion reconstruction fund for Iran a "slush fund."
On the political front, Netanyahu is also leaning on pro-Israel senators to press Trump. However, that avenue appears to be narrowing. Senator Lindsey Graham, who had previously pushed for more aggressive strikes on Iran, reversed course this week, s…

An official warming of ties and cooperation is on the horizon for Israelis and Syrians after only ever knowing one another as bitter foes.
But the evolving connection is a complicated one – pushed aggressively by Washington while still questioned by some in Israel.
Despite reports that Israeli and Syrian representatives might soon meet face to face, possibly in Paris, to finalize a security and cooperation agreement, getting them there is a tricky dance.
Why We Wrote This
President Donald Trump is pushing hard for a security deal between longtime U.S. ally Israel and emerging partner Syria. But suspicions about President Ahmed al-Sharaa and concerns over the status of Syrian Kurds and Druze are giving many Israelis pause.

Donald Trump
said he was going to jump straight on a call to “Bibi” to tell him not to respond to
Iran

Israel
. Within hours,
Benjamin Netanyahu
had defied the
US
president – and targeted several sites across Iran.
This apparent act of defiance came after the US president had insisted that it was he, and not Netanyahu, who “called the shots”.
Like the “brothers in arms” the Israeli leader and the US president like to think they are,
Donald Trump
and
Benjamin Netanyahu
appear to bicker like siblings.
This is an appearance. Not reality. The
relationship
between the two leaders has been closer to that of an agent and his handler. It has always been “Bibi” who’s done the handling, and it is always The Don who has been handled. This has delivered unimagined benefits to
Netanyahu
, who, with the help of
Trump
acting against the advice of his own band of court loyalists, has reduced the US to a protector of
Israel

WASHINGTON—Despite close coordination between US and Israeli leaders and their militaries from the earliest days of the Iran war, the two countries’ interests and objectives, and their leaders’ political priorities and constraints, have increasingly diverged. The once-modest gap between them has opened into a chasm that will not be easily bridged.
Moreover, the chasm is widening along several different fissures:
Whether to end the war
When the war began, each side undoubtedly harbored hope that the Iranian regime would collapse. But when it became clear that the regime could endure significant military blows and inflict painful retaliation against US military and Gulf state infrastructure targets, US President Donald Trump understood that enough was enough and has been searching for an off-ramp ever since. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, operates according to the post-October 7 Israe…

Iran and Israel have traded fire in the most serious direct exchange since an April ceasefire in the U.S.-led war against the regime in Tehran, a resurrection of hostilities that threatens to collapse President Donald Trump’s dealmaking.
"Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting,’" Trump said in a Truth Social post on Monday morning.
Trump had already urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to retaliate immediately for Tehran’s missile attack, seeking to preserve the fragile diplomacy he says is nearing its conclusion.
But Israel struck
central and western Iran anyway.

) — In 2018, as President Barack Obama struck a deal with Iran to constrain its nuclear production, American Jewish groups were divided: Those on the right excoriated the deal, saying it left Iran a major threat to Israel, while those on the left were more supportive.
This time around, as President Donald Trump has announced a new deal with Iran after months of war that the United States fought jointly with Israel, American Jewish groups are more unified: They aren’t happy.
On the right and the left, Jewish groups are expressing concerns about the deal that Trump and Iran announced on Sunday night, even as its terms have not yet officially come into focus.
Trump has emphasized that the deal reopens the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran closed after the war began on Feb. 28.

US-Iran deal a ‘political nightmare’ for Netanyahu, analysts say

WASHINGTON: The US-Iran agreement has placed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in one of the most difficult political positions of his career, leaving him squeezed between Washington, Tehran, domestic critics, and an approaching election.

For decades, Netanyahu built his political identity around three interconnected themes: his ability to influence United States policy, his determination to confront Iran, and his reputation as Israel’s ultimate guarantor of security. The emerging agreement has now raised questions about all three.

The deal leaves unresolved several issues Israel has long regarded as vital, including Iran’s ballistic missile programme, its support for regional allies such as Hezbollah, and key aspects of its nuclear activities. At the same time, sanctions relief could provide Tehran with significant economic breathing room.

The clock is ticking on the Iran peace deal. A memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US is due to be signed in Geneva on June 19, allowing for a 60-day ceasefire extension and the opening of the strategically vital waterway, the Strait of Hormuz. But key questions remain unresolved that could yet scupper the agreement.
For Washington and Tehran, the memorandum also includes Lebanon. Iran has made the signing of the deal contingent on an
Israeli undertaking to withdraw
from the territories it has occupied in southern Lebanon during the
war
. And the US president, Donald Trump, has demanded that the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, behave “more responsibly in Lebanon”.
But Israel’s bombing of south Lebanon and Beirut
continues
, the Israeli military presence in Lebanon remains and Israel’s leaders remain adamant they will not withdraw. So where does Israel feature in this deal and how will…

Israel and Iran exchanged fire for the first time since the start of the truce on June 7, despite US President Donald Trump repeatedly warning Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu against launching strikes on Iran. Could that be the first sign of a fallout between the two leaders? FRANCE 24's Angela Diffley tells us more.
Why Trump’s draft peace pact with Iran threatens Netanyahu’s Middle East plans
Why Trump’s draft peace pact with Iran threatens Netanyahu’s Middle East plans
For decades, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has preached a mantra of peace and stability in the Middle East through the destruction of Iran’s Islamic Republic.
The obliteration of the ayatollahs, he prophesied, would lead to the normalisation of relations between Israel and the wider Arab-Islamic world – with Israel emerging as the Middle East’s dominant power and indispensable security provider.
But on Saturday, Netanyahu’s dreams looked set to be dashed, after US President Donald...

Neither of their goals has been achieved, and Israeli forces are still tied up in Lebanon.
For now, Israeli officials are speaking carefully in public so they don't upset their most important ally, who is known to react strongly to criticism. But privately, they are clearly frustrated. President Donald Trump and leaders across the Middle East are celebrating the long-awaited diplomatic agreement aimed at putting a permanent end to the fighting in Gaza, but officials and analysts tell ABC News there is still a long road ahead when it comes to ensuring that peace will be lasting.
Trump announced on Wednesday that a deal had been reached to free all living and dead hostages in Gaza taken on Oct. 7, 2023, in exchange for the release of scores of Palestinian prisoners and a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from the area.
But the agreement covers just a fraction of the president’s 20-point plan for Gaza, which extends well beyond spelling out the initial steps for ending the two-year-long conflict -- establishing a framework for reconstructing Gaza and building what Trump has described as an "everlasting peace."

Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at Mar-a-Lago in late December, he had a surprise message for President Trump: Israel would begin weaning itself off U.S. military aid. At first, Trump was taken aback: The billions of dollars that Washington provides Israel each year, after all, have been a bedrock of America’s Middle East strategy for decades, and essential support for its closest regional ally. Trump, ever the wary transactionalist, ribbed the prime minister:
Oh, and what do you get out of it?
By the time the leaders next met, in Washington, D.C., on February 11 to discuss Iran, Trump had come around. Eager to shift the military burden onto others and curtail foreign aid, the president brought up Netanyahu’s proposal, according to an Israeli official who shared previously undisclosed details of the recent discussions.
By the way

Israeli
prime minister and
indicted
war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu does not adapt to imposed realities.
He tries to
smash
them through brute force, permanent escalation and manufactured crises. Throughout his career, war has been a favoured strategic instrument for preserving Israeli supremacy and his own political survival.
Most recently, his priority is to

His obsession with what he

His horizon extends well past temporary ceasefires to the end of all resistance and a region restructured around Israeli dominance under American protection.

Was Netanyahu left in the dark over Trump's Iran deal?
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was caught off guard by US President Donald Trump’s decision to call off planned military strikes on Iran and instead pursue a diplomatic understanding with Tehran, Axios reported, revealing what appears to be a growing divide between Washington and Tel Aviv over how the conflict should end.
Axios reported that Netanyahu was left “surprised” by Trump’s announcement that he had cancelled the attacks after receiving indications that Iran’s leadership had approved a draft framework aimed at ending the war. The report further claimed the Israeli leader had not been fully briefed on the state of the US-Iran negotiations and had been seeking information about the talks through allies close to the Trump administration.
A halt in the wars engulfing the Middle East may be closer than ever, as Washington and Tehran prepare to sign a memorandum of understanding, one that could reshape the region. But as the two sides inch toward a deal, Netanyahu’s absence from the negotiation table has raised eyebrows.
According to Axios, the Israeli leader had been calling allies close to the Trump administr…
