Serena Williams put up a remarkable effort in her first singles match in nearly four years, but the 23-time Grand Slam champion came up just short against Maya Joint at Wimbledon on Tuesday.
Williams, 44, thrilled the crowd on Centre Court with some vintage shot-making throughout the highly anticipated contest.
But it was Joint, the 20-year-old Australian, who held her nerve in the biggest match of her young career to claim a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 victory on tennis' most famous stage.
"I don't know what just happened," Joint said during her on-court interview immediately after the contest. "I didn't get much sleep last night ... I've been dreaming about this moment since I was a little kid, so this is pretty crazy."

Serena Williams could not make a winning return to singles tennis
London (AFP) - Serena Williams suffered a dramatic first-round defeat on her return to singles tennis at Wimbledon on Tuesday as she succumbed to inspired Australian youngster Maya Joint, while Iga Swiatek started her title defence with a nervy win.
Williams lost 6-3, 6-7 (6⁄8), 6-3 on Centre Court in her first professional singles match since “evolving away” from tennis in 2022, despite threatening a comeback after saving a match point in the second set.
The 44-year-old showed glimpses of her vintage best but ran out of steam after breaking first in the decider, slipping to a third consecutive first-round exit at the All England Club, after suffering the same fate in both 2021 and four years ago.
“I didn’t get much sleep last night, I was up until 2:00 am last night just thinking about it,” said 20-year-old Joint.
“The start was was very nerve-wracking. Trying to close out the match, she definitely raised her level.”

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Two weeks ago,Angelique Kerbercame within one point of exiting the Australian Open in the opening round. Six matches later, she can call herself a Grand Slam champion.
The No. 7 German took advantage of a noticeably tenseSerena Williamson Saturday, triumphing 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to win her first major title and thwarting the American's bid to match Steffi Graf's record of 22 major wins.
It wasn't long ago that Kerber was toiling in mediocrity. In 2011, she lost 11 consecutive first-round matches, but her vision was clear from the beginning of this tournament -- that no matter what, she'd never let the pressure of a big moment get to her again.
Mission accomplished. Two hours, 8 minutes into a drama-filled battle, Williams overcooked a forehand volley on match point, sending Kerber sprawling to the ground in tears. Overwhelmed, Kerber sauntered to her chair and looked to the crowd, eventually making her way over to her camp.
"I got my second chance, and this is my dream come true," said Kerber, who was born five days before Graf won her first Australian Open title in 1988. "My whole life I am wor…

WIMBLEDON, LONDON — Serena Williams didn't quite have the fairytale Wimbledon return she dreamed of as the 44-year-old tennis legend suffered a three-set defeat to Maya Joint in the opening round.
Back competing at a grand slam for the first time in nearly four years, Williams forced a deciding set — much to the delight of the Centre Court crowd — but her opponent 24 years her junior ultimately prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
Having retired from tennis at the US Open in 2022, the 23-time grand slam champion entered Wimbledon on a wildcard. But in truth, Williams now hasn’t won a match at Wimbledon since 2019, when she lost to Simona Halep in the final, with first-round exits in 2021, 2022 and now four years later now on her books.
Joint, ranked 53rd in the world came into this match off the back of losing 13 of her past 14 matches, but she coped with the pressure and the occasion to reach the second round at SW19 for the first time in her career.
