Serena Williams keeps on commenting half-jokingly about how “it’s summer” and “the kids aren’t in school” as the reasoning for her tennis comeback at age 44.
Turns out family really might be the biggest factor behind Williams’ decision to return to the pro game nearly after four years away.
Her two daughters, eight-year-old Olympia and Adira, who almost is 3, have been with her every step of the way as she played two doubles warmup matches before accepting wild card invitations to both the singles and doubles (with older sister Venus) competitions at Wimbledon.
“Just finished a mean game of duck duck goose,” Williams said on X shortly after her singles wild card was announced.

The 2026 Wimbledon Championships will feature an unexpected storyline, as Serena and Venus Williams are teaming up to play together at the doubles tournament.
The sisters haven't played together at a major since winning the Wimbledon doubles title in 2016, and Serena even stepped away from tennis in 2022. However, Serena returned to action in June of this year, and now she will team up with her sister for her first appearance at a Grand Slam tournament since the 2022 U.S. Open.

While she hasn't played singles yet, this tournament with Venus will be her highest-profile tournament since returning.

Williams and her sister Venus Williams will reunite at Wimbledon
for the women's doubles competition, Williams revealed that her 8-year-old daughter Olympia came up with the idea.
"My daughter, Olympia, told me I should play with Venus," Williams said on Tuesday at the Berlin Open, where she suffered a first-round doubles loss with partner Karolína Muchová. "She's always right... she's very smart. She's very wise, I think is a better word. So I said, 'OK, Olympia, we'll see if we can do it.'"
Olympia got her wish. The Williams sisters received a wild card entry into Wimbledon and will share the court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for the first time since 2016.
