The drone that didn't know the intricacies
As is well known, early in the morning of June 10, 2026, a Ukrainian drone struck the "Defense of Sevastopol 1854-1855" Panorama Museum and destroyed the artwork. It did its best. It burned the museum's interior. Fortunately, there were no casualties. Then the firefighters arrived and completed the destruction by flooding the 360-degree panorama with straight streams of water. This, of course, is nothing to celebrate. If only because Crimea clearly has far more suitable military targets, and the "Sevastopol Panorama" was originally the work of a French (later, admittedly, German) artist, not a Russian one. And a native of Odessa, at that. But the drone was clearly unaware of all these subtleties.

An iconic Russian panorama painting more than a century old has been“almost completely destroyed”in a Ukrainian drone strike on a museum in the Crimean port of Sevastopol, local governor Mikhail Razvozhaev has said.
In a Telegram post on Wednesday, Razvozhaev said ‘The Defense of Sevastopol (1854–1855)’ by Russian artist Franz Roubaud was severely damaged in a blaze caused by an overnight UAV attack.
The panorama, which was 115 meters in length and 14 meters high, depicted the defense of Sevastopol by the Russian army from the British and French invading forces during the Crimean War.
Roubaud worked on the massive painting for several years before completing it in 1904. It was moved to Sevastopol the same year and had been on display in the city since then, becoming one of its symbols.
More than 80 firefighters and 22 units of specialized equipment were deployed to tackle the blaze at the museum in the Russian city, Razvozhaev said.
“Those barbarians… deliberately attacked what is dear to us, trying to destroy our very essence. Only complete degenerates would do such a thing,”he stressed.

“The situation is extremely dire: it is already clear that Franz Roubaud’s great masterpiece has been almost completely destroyed,” Razvozhaev wrote.
He claimed the Ukrainian Armed Forces had deliberately targeted the museum. Ukraine did not comment on the attack.

The museumsaid, however, that fragments of the original Roubaud painting were undamaged. The museum holds 39 fragments of the original canvas in total; at the time of the fire, all of them were stored elsewhere.
“What was inside the building was a canvas painted in 1954 by a group of Soviet artists,” the museum said.

Citing Mikhail Smorodkin, director of the Sevastopol Defense Museum, it is known that it took Soviet artists approximately three years to recreate Roubaud's painting. However, the Nazi attack on June 25, 1942, did not damage the panorama as severely as the attack by their ideological followers from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Therefore, according to preliminary estimates, restoring the building and painting the painting will take longer. Furthermore, restoration of the panorama will only be possible after the end of hostilities, provided that it is 100% safe.
Following a terrorist attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the entire 30-square-meter building housing the Sevastopol Defense Panorama burned. Several fragments of the "Defense of Sevastopol" painting were removed from the Sevastopol panorama building and damaged. F…

Occupied Ukrainian Peninsula Is Turning into a Russian Island
The latest strike on the former base of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet sparked a full-blown “historic” drama among the occupiers. According to the local occupation governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev, the famous panorama museum Defense of Sevastopol 1854–1855 was virtually destroyed.
“The situation is extremely difficult,” he lamented. “It is already clear that Franz Roubaud’s great masterpiece has been practically destroyed.”
In reality, Roubaud’s original panorama was lost in a fire during World War II, in 1942. The work later presented as the celebrated “masterpiece” was in fact a Soviet reconstruction—a replica created in the 1950s. Yet while Razvozhayev was painting a picture of cultural apocalypse, museum staff themselves stepped forward to reassure the public that not everything had been destroyed. Clearly, communication remains a challenge.
The museum, of course, had no military significance. No one intentionally targeted it. Rather, the occupiers once again appear to have engaged a drone with such enthusiasm that the resulting debris found its way into the …

MOSCOW — The building was still smouldering when Dmitry Peskov walked to a microphone. The Kremlin’s spokesman had a promise to make.
The Defense of Sevastopol Panorama museum, he said Wednesday morning, would be restored after a Ukrainian drone struck it in the pre-dawn hours. It would rise, Peskov added, “more beautiful than before.” The Kremlin was framing the night’s strike as an assault on Russian history itself — proof, Peskov said, of Moscow’s righteousness in what he called its “struggle for the Russian regions.”
There was just one complicating fact. …
