A Russian attack on Kyiv overnight on Jan. 24 damaged buildings at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a centuries-old monastery complex that holds some of Ukraine's most revered shrines and relics. Site officials said it was the first time since World War II that military action had damaged the Lavra.
"What happened this time was a direct threat," said Maksym Ostapenko, the site's director general. "The explosion occurred very close to the Lavra. The shockwave affected the structure itself, not just windows and doors, but the walls. Sites of national and global significance could realistically have been damaged or destroyed. There are simply no words to describe this."

KYIV, Ukraine
—
Russia fired hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles at Ukraine’s biggest cities in an overnight barrage that killed at least 11 people and set fire to a world-renowned religious landmark, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials said Monday.
The attacks on the capital of Kyiv, and the second-largest city of Kharkiv, came after Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke separately by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday. The exchange suggests Washington hasn’t given up on its diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting that followed Moscow’s all-out invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.

Ukraine Daily Briefing | June 15, 2026
In the early hours of June 15, a Russian Shahed-type kamikaze drone set fire to the roof of the Dormition Cathedral inside the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra — a monastery that has stood for nearly a thousand years and survived the Mongol invasions, the Nazis, and the Soviet era, only to be targeted now by a regime that claims to defend Christian civilization. The overnight barrage of 70 missiles and 611 drones killed at least 11 people across Ukraine, while in Kharkiv, Russian forces executed a deliberate double-tap strike — waiting for rescuers to arrive before launching a second missile into the same location, killing five of the people who had come to save lives. As G7 leaders gathered in France and the EU adopted a fresh package of sanctions, President Zelensky offered Putin a meeting on the summit’s sidelines; Moscow’s answer, as it has been to every peace overture, was silence.

Kyiv's air quality deteriorated on July 3 due to fires caused by Russia's latest mass missile and drone attack and hot, windless weather, authorities said, as rescuers continued searching through the rubble for a second day.
The smell of smoke and haze lingered over the capital with authorities

The PM2.5 level — a measurement of harmful particles in the air — reached 160 during the morning, on a par with the 165 in the notoriously polluted Indian capital of New Delhi.

moderate rainfall expected later in the day should improve air quality.

Four people have been killed and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a symbol of Ukrainian spiritual and cultural history, is on fire after the heaviest Russian air attack on the Ukrainian capital in two weeks.
Drones and missiles struck several high-rise apartment buildings and damaged electricity lines, leaving some 140,000 residents without power, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
The central Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in 1051, was seriously damaged in a direct attack, Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the capital's military administration, said in a separate Telegram post.

As towering flames rose over the monastery, residents took shelter underground in the worst Russian missile attack on Ukraine since early June when drones and missiles killed more than 20 people and left more than 100 wounded.

KYIV - Russia fired a barrage of missiles at several major Ukrainian cities, setting Kyiv's historic Dormition Cathedral on fire and killing nine, while Ukraine strikes claimed three lives south of Moscow.
The wave of attacks came as news of a US-Iran deal started to open a path to peace in the Middle East war, highlighting the lack of progress toward an end to over four years of fighting in Ukraine.
Five rescue workers were killed during firefighting operations in northeast Ukraine, while at least five others were wounded after Russian strikes hit the city of Kharkiv, Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said Monday.
The violence killed another four people in the capital, where fire broke out on the grounds of the UNESCO world heritage site Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the roof of the Dormition Cathedral was on fire.
Residents were seen running through the streets seeking shelter as projectiles were intercepted in the sky and glowing debris fell across the city, AFP journalists in the capital witnessed.

A century of cinema. A morning of missiles. What Russia destroyed at Kyiv’s Dovzhenko Film Studio.

In the early hours of June 15, Russia attacked Kyiv again. Nearly every district of the city was hit — and the roof of the Assumption Cathedral caught fire at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of the most important Orthodox religious sites in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A fire also broke out at the National Dovzhenko Film Studio, destroying Ukraine’s oldest collection of costumes. At Meduza’s request, film producer Alexander Rodnyansky wrote about the studio’s significance in the history of Ukrainian and Soviet cinema. For Rodnyansky, the attack is deeply personal: He was born in Kyiv and studied film directing at the Kyiv National I. K. Karpenko-Kary Theater, Cinema, and Television University, whose buildings then stood on the grounds of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

A prominent Ukrainian monastery complex in the heart of Kyiv is on fire following a massive and deadly Russian attack overnight into Monday that wounded more than a dozen people in the capital, according to local authorities.
Images showed flames billowing from the UNESCO-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which traces its roots back almost 1,000 years, following the attack.
Firefighters were battling the flames under the towers and domes of the complex’s Dormition Cathedral, images released by Ukraine’s emergency services showed.
“The Russians have damaged the Cathedral of the Dormition,” said Tetyana Berezhna, Minister of Culture of Ukraine, in a statement.
The Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine asked for “prayers for the salvation of the shrine from destruction,” in a statement.
“Another Russian crime against humanity, against history, against Christianity.”

The Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, founded in 1051, is the most important religious and cultural site in Eastern Europe. For nearly a thousand years, it has survived invasions, occupations, revolutions, and wars. And today, it joins a growing list of Ukrainian cultural landmarks damaged by Russian missiles.

Catholic, Orthodox leaders condemn Russian attack on Kyiv cathedral
Catholic and Orthodox leaders are expressing shock and outrage after a Russian drone strike heavily damaged a historic monastery complex in Kyiv, Ukraine, with a cathedral set ablaze.
The Dormition (Assumption) Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sustained a direct hit amid a wave of June 14-15 attacks launched by Russia across Ukraine that targeted several cultural and residential structures.
The 11th-century monastery is “one of the most holy sites in the Orthodox world,” said Metropolitan Archbishop Borys A. Gudziak of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia in a June 14 Facebook post.
The combined barrage of missiles and drones launched by Russia killed at least 11 and wounded 53, according to Ukraine President Voldymyr Zelenskyy. Two children, ages 5 and 6, were injured in Kyiv.
Among the dead were five first responders in Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv.
Zelenskyy inspected the damage to the Dormition Cathedral, climbing up with a delegation onto the roof, more than 8,600 square feet of which had been torched.
