Kyiv (2 July 2026) – Last night’s large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine is the latest in a series of deadly strikes that are driving a sharp rise in civilian casualties, the UN Human Rights Office said today.
Overnight, Russian armed forces launched a reported 74 missiles and almost 500 attack drones, which mostly at Kyiv city.
Ukrainian authorities report that the attack killed at least 22 civilians and injured more than 100, including four children. As search and rescue operations continue, the number of casualties is expected to rise.
“This massive assault affected every district of Kyiv city,” said Danielle Bell, Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU). “Our findings have repeatedly shown that the use of powerful explosive weapons in densely populated civilian areas has devastating and foreseeable consequences for civilians.”
HRMMU visited one of the worst-affected sites in Darnytskyi district of Kyiv city, where a missile directly struck a nine-story residential building, causing a large part of the building to collapse. When HRMMU visited the site on 2…

When a Russian warhead detonated on a Ukrainian street in April, Maksym kicked out a bus window as his mother urged him to run and leave her behind.
They'd gone out on Palm Sunday in Sumy, about 20 miles from Russia, so Maksym, now 14, could get a new outfit for school pictures. Maksym and mom Natalia Tenytska are now among the 25 passengers who survived the attack. The explosion and shrapnel from it
killed 35 civilians
on and near the bus.
"They're killing civilians. It's elimination of the Ukrainian nation," Tenytska said in Ukrainian. "They're just wiping our cities off the face of the earth."
The deadly bus ride
The bus Maksym and his mother rode on Palm Sunday followed Route 62, taking passengers to a university, the mall and the airport. The fare is 20 cents. The bus was crowded on April 13 as two Russian ballistic missiles bolted through the sky. The warheads were each propelled by 1,000 pounds of high explosives. One wrecked a conference center at Sumy State University. The other detonated nearby on Peter and Paul Street as the Route 62 bus approached.

overnight, killing at least six people and injuring 35. Some 430 drones and 18
missiles
targeted the country, Ukraine’s president said, calling the
strikes
a deliberate and calculated attack “aimed at causing maximum harm to people and civilian infrastructure”.
Ukraine’s air force said most of the drones and missiles were shot down, but officials said falling debris and fires damaged high-rise apartments, a school, a medical facility and administrative buildings across nine districts in the city of about three million.
"At that moment you don't know what to do first: save yourself, your child, or run to help people, because so many people were screaming and needed help," said Anastasia, 29, whose apartment block was hit.
The attacks came just two days after Russia’s foreign ministry indicated it was ready to resume direct talks with Ukraine on ending the war in Istanbul. An official told TASS the “ball is in Ukraine’s court”.

Other affected cities included Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kremenchuk, Kryvyi Rih and Kherson. Energy infrastructure was also hit, causing temporary power and water outages ahead of winter, with repair crews working to restore services.
“Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law. They are unacceptable and must end immediately,” UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Monday at the regular news briefing in New York.

Russia unleashed one of its most devastating aerial assaults on Ukraine's capital early Thursday, killing at least 27 people, injuring 91 others and leaving widespread destruction across Kyiv in what officials described as the deadliest attack on the city this year.
Hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles struck multiple parts of the capital overnight, triggering repeated explosions that sent residents rushing into bomb shelters and metro stations. Thick plumes of smoke blanketed the skyline as emergency crews battled fires and searched through collapsed buildings, Reuters reported.
The latest death toll rose after an injured victim died in hospital, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration.
Rescue efforts remained underway at several locations, with authorities warning that the number of casualties could increase. "Rescue crews will work without interruption until all the debris is cleared," Tkachenko wrote on Telegram. "Unfortunately, more victims may still be found."
He added that five bodies had been recovered from one heavily damaged site on the eastern bank of the Dnipro Rive…

KYIV—News of Russia’s deadliest attack on Ukraine so far this year came to us less than an hour after we had left the Ukrainian capital, after having spent almost a week in the country. Overnight on Tuesday, Russian forces
launched
hundreds of missiles and drones on several Ukrainian cities, killing nearly two dozen people, including children, and injuring many more. In news reports on Wednesday, we saw damage in the same cities, and on some of the same streets, that we had visited days earlier, in what was our third trip to Ukraine since late February.
These trips provide important context for the latest set of attacks and for the road ahead. We saw ample indications, if not clear proof, of a trend toward growing Ukrainian strength and emerging Russian vulnerabilities in the fifth year of Putin’s hare-brained “special military operation.” Our latest trip started in O…

More than four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the “danger is only increasing”, particularly from attack drones, a top UN human rights official warned on Thursday.
“During the first two months of this year, 60 per cent of all civilian casualties were in frontline regions (and) almost half of those killed were older persons,” said Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nada Al-Nashif.
In a scheduled update on the war to theHuman Rights Councilin Geneva, Ms. Al-Nashif noted thatthe leading cause of death and injury was “attacks involving short-range drones”in both Ukrainian government-controlled areas and territory occupied by Russia.
UN data shows thatin 2025, at least 580 civilians were killed and 3,000 injured in such attacks. But in just the first two months of this year, 107 civilians were killed and 430 injured, representing a near-doubling of the casualty rate.
A full 95 per cent of casualties were caused by short-range drones targeting Government-controlled territory, the Deputy High Commissioner added.

Ukraine's capital Kyiv came under attack by Russian ballistic missiles early Monday morning, the country's air force said, on the eve of a critical NATO summit in Turkey that US President Donald Trump plans to attend. Many civilians are feared dead.
The fresh waves of missiles and drones launched at Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight on Sunday hit multiple residential buildings, just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Moscow was preparing another large-scale assault on the capital. The fresh attack comes barely days after a similar strike on houses in Kyiv had killed at least 41 people on Thursday.

Friday, citing a now-deleted post by officials in the officer’s hometown.
Colonel Sergei Ilyin led the Pacific Fleet’s 155th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade and died “during the special military operation” in Ukraine, according to a post attributed to the Urmarsky district administration in the republic of Chuvashia.
The post did not specify the date of Ilyin’s death, but Astra shared a photo of a billboard at his apparent funeral showing his birth and death dates as Nov. 26, 1985, and July 2, 2025.
That same day, reports
emerged
that 11 senior Russian military officers, including Navy Deputy Commander Mikhail Gudkov, were killed in a Ukrainian missile strike in the southwestern Kursk region.
Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed Major General Gudkov’s death “during combat duty” on July 2 but did not provide a cause or mention the other reported casualties.

According to official figures reported by the Associated Press, this marks the highest child casualty toll from a single assault on Kyiv since aerial attacks began in October 2022.

Russia says 2 die in clashes with Ukrainian agents in Crimea
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia’s main domestic security agency said Wednesday that one of its agents and an army soldier were killed while fending off what it described as a series of attempted terror attacks by Ukrainian “saboteurs” in Crimea, a claim Ukrainian officials denied.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin condemned what he described as a “stupid criminal action” by the Ukrainian authorities and vowed to take additional steps to ensure security of Crimea. He also strongly urged the West to warn Kiev against “resorting to terror instead of searching for a peaceful settlement.”
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko rejected the Russian claims as “fantasy” and “provocation,” saying in a statement that his government would use only political and diplomatic means to restore its sovereignty over Crimea.
Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula in March 2014 following a hastily called referendum. The ensuing conflict in eastern Ukraine has killed more than 9,500, and fighting there between Ukrainian troops and Russia-backed separatists has continued despite a 2015 cease-fire.

Moscow unleashed a lethal barrage on Ukraine early Tuesday, hitting the capital Kyiv and the central city of Dnipro in a
broad-ranging offensive
that inflicted one of the deadliest attacks for months.
At least 23 people were killed in the overnight assault, including seven people in Kyiv and 16 others in Dnipro, according to Ukrainian authorities. Two of those were children and one was a deputy fire chief – Maj. Anton Yarmolenko – who was on call at the time. In total, more than 100 people were wounded.
In the capital alone, more than 41,000 residents sought refuge in underground stations, Kyiv Metro authorities said. It marked the highest number of people to have taken shelter in the metro during a night-time air raid alert in recent years, mirroring the scale of the bombing campaign.
More than 600 drones and dozens of missiles, such as advanced hypersonics, were fired on Ukraine, according to the military, hitting key civilian infrastructure. Within Kyiv, five medical facilities and several residenti…

Russia launched waves of missiles and drones at Ukraine early on Monday, killing at least 22 people in an attack that exposed widening gaps in the country’s air defences, authorities said.
All of the ballistic missiles launched by Russia struck their targets, underscoring Kyiv’s need for more Patriot interceptor missiles — a point Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will likely reiterate at a Nato summit in Ankara, Turkey, this week.

A thousand days of
war in Ukraine
have been captured in stunning images, many of them horrifying, some of them poignant, others uplifting.
Since Russia’s all-out invasion of its smaller neighbour on Feb. 24, 2022, Europe’s biggest armed conflict since World War II has cost tens of thousands of lives on both sides. Thousands of Ukrainian civilians have been killed in the fighting. Others have lost their family, their homes and their livelihoods.
The Russian military has repeatedly used missiles, drones and artillery to
blast civilian targets
across Ukraine with devastating consequences. The loss of homes and possessions, snatched away in the blink of an eye, is traumatic.
Across Ukrainian towns and cities, communities are suddenly and bewilderingly pitched into unfamiliar circumstances.

At least 26 people have been killed in theKyivregion as part ofRussia’s latest bombardment, asVolodymyr ZelenskylamentedUkraine’s lack of interceptor missiles from allies.
Russian strikes in the region killed at least 16 in the capital, with 10 dead in wider Kyiv region, officials said.
President Zelensky pleaded for interceptors, the only weapon that can shoot down ballistic projectiles, after Ukraine was unable to down any of the 23 ballistic missiles fired by Russia.
He said it was "simply nonsensical that, in the modern world, production has still not been scaled up to the level actually required to protect people from ballistic terror".
"As long as Patriot missiles sit in our allies' stockpiles, Russia is only encouraged to keep destroying residential buildings," Zelenskiy said on X. "The U.S. and Europe have the power to stop this terror."

The two explosions at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant came decades apart in the dead of night. The first, at 1:23 a.m. on April 26, 1986, spread a cloud of deadly radiation that raised fears across Europe and shook the very foundations of the Soviet Union. Some say it led to its eventual collapse. The second, at 1:59 a.m. on February 14, 2025, was blamed by Ukrainian officials on a Russian drone with an explosive warhead. While not as catastrophic, it sparked new anxieties about Moscow’s invasion of its neighbor, striking the site that symbolized so much suffering for Ukraine. The AP’s Hanna Arhirova explains more. Four people have been killed across Ukraine in Russian attacks, including two in Kyiv, where powerful explosions hit for the second night in a row.
Ukraine struck oil refineries in Russia’s Saratov and Tatarstan regions, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was in Turkey to meet US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Nato summit.
Several explosions were heard shortly after midnight in Kyiv, even before authorities could issue an air raid alert to give civilians time to find shelter.
The early morning Russian attacks killed one woman and injured two others in Kyiv, according to city administration head Tymur Tkachenko. The State Emergency Service said the attack damaged several administrative buildings and warehouses, as well as a garage complex and several trams.

Iryna Moskaeva and her children jumped out of their beds and started running after an explosion rocked their Kyiv apartment early on Thursday, one of many residential buildings hit during a massive Russian attack that killed at least 30 people across the Ukrainian capital.
But there was nowhere to go. “All the windows in the room were shattered, and the door was jammed – I couldn’t open it,” the 61-year-old told CNN.
Moskaeva, who was eventually rescued by firefighters, said this was the second time that a Russian attack had damaged her home. “The first time there was an attack like this, I started crying – I was shaking so badly,” she related. Now unable to enter her apartment and going to stay with relatives, she said she was worried about getting to work on Monday. “How am I supposed to get there? There’s no power, no clothes to change into, there’s nothing.”

The All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations (UCCRO) issued a statement regarding the latest Russian terrorist attacks against Ukrainian cities.
As stated in the
statement
by the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations, on the night of August 27–28, 2025, the Russian state once again launched terrorist attacks against the cities of Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, and other Ukrainian towns. As a result of missile and drone strikes, civilians — including children — were killed and wounded. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, including a kindergarten, were destroyed or damaged; hundreds of people lost their homes, and thousands of Ukrainians endured the terror of nighttime assaults.
"The dictatorial Russian regime has once again exposed its inhumane nature and its criminal, genocidal policy," the statement reads. "We strongly condemn the latest terrorist attacks carried out by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian…

More than a dozen people were killed in a major attack on Kyiv overnight into Thursday, the city mayor said, hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia was planning an extensive attack.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched nearly 500 drones and dozens of missiles towards the country in a “massive combined strike,” simultaneously targeting the capital from different directions.
While most of the missiles and drones were intercepted, a total of 33 projectiles made impact.
More than 85 people were wounded in the attacks, including at least one child and several medical workers who were hurt in a strike on an ambulance substation, according to Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko, who said 13 people had been killed.

The recent attacks against the civilian population in Russian territories raise once again a question that the international community can no longer ignore: how many more tragedies must occur before violence directed against civilians is clearly condemned?
One of the most tragic incidents occurred in Starobelsk, where an attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck an educational building and a student residence while children slept. Twenty-one people died as a result of this tragedy.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Attacks against civilian targets continue systematically. Recently, a children's playground in Genichesk was hit by enemy fire, killing a child. Attacks against passenger buses and other civilian transportation have also been reported. People simply traveling to work, school, or to visit their familie…

Editor's note: This is a breaking story and is being updated.
Russia launched waves of missiles and drones toward Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight on July 6, killing at least eight people and injuring at least 34 others, just hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of yet another large-scale attack targeting the capital.

"executed arbitrarily," while it was occupied by Russian troops
for several weeks. It claimed, attaching photos and videos from the scene, that some civilians were killed with their hands tied behind their backs and their bodies were left scattered in the streets.
