Trump open to congressional review of Iran deal as lawmakers seek details
<p>WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday signalled his willingness to submit the recently negotiated Iran agreement to Congress for review, as lawmakers from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers demanded access to a deal whose full terms remain closely guarded.</p>
<p>Speaking during a meeting with United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in France, Trump suggested he had no objection to congressional scrutiny of the accord, which was <a href="https://www.dawn.com/news/2007972/us-iran-reach-preliminary-agreement-to-end-war-signing-set-for-friday">announced</a> over the weekend and is expected to formally be signed in Geneva on Friday by Vice President JD Vance.</p>

President Donald Trump is framing a tentative peace deal with Iran as a victory for the U.S., but fractures in the Republican Party suggest that could be a hard sell both on Capitol Hill and in the run-up to November’s midterm elections.

“It’s a very strong deal,” Trump said at the G7 summit in France on Wednesday, seated across from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. “Nobody knows what it is, but it’s very strong.”
The early response from Republican leaders and the conservative commentariat is mixed at best, in part because not everyone has had a chance yet to digest the
memorandum of understanding
(MOU) between the two countries.
Most Republicans agree that the administration “has taken steps” to diminish Iran as “an existential th…

PresidentDonald Trumpon Tuesday signaled that he's open to sending details of the agreement withIranto members ofCongress, as lawmakers from both parties are raising questions, asking to see the accord and saying they should vote on any final deal.
Arriving at a bilateral meeting in France withUnited Arab EmiratesPresidentMohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Trump said he wouldn't mind sending thememorandum of understandingto Congress for review. He did not indicate when Congress might receive the details. The framework was announced and signed digitally on Sunday and could bring an end to the hostilities between theU.S.and Iran that began in February.
"What I would like to do is send it to Congress and say 'you shouldn't approve it.' And they will approve it," Trump said, apparently joking. He is in Évian-les-Bains, France, for the 2026 G7 summit.

US lawmakers in the dark on Iran deal - Gulf Times
President Donald Trump said Tuesday he was willing to send his interim deal to end the war with Iran for review by the US Congress, as lawmakers, including many of his fellow Republicans, said they were largely in the dark about the pact. The US-Iran agreement, announced on Sunday, has spurred optimism that a conflict that has killed thousands and disrupted the global economy will soon end. According to officials from both countries, the memorandum of understanding would extend a tenuous ceasefire announced in April by another 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route effectively blocked since the US and Israel began attacking Iran on February 28. But the details remain unclear and the text of the pact has not been released or sent to Congress.
Trump also insisted Tuesday that Iran would abandon its nuclear weapons program. Iran has long maintained that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. Democrats have questioned Trump's latest promise of a peace deal.
"We've been told dozens of times that the war is over and dozens of times we've been disappointed," Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schume…

Congress needs to be able to review the agreement between the Trump administration and Tehran that is intended to end the Iran war, senators in both parties said Monday.
President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the United States and Iran had reached a memorandum of understanding to end the war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and begin more comprehensive negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program and sanctions relief.
The deal has been signed electronically, while a formal, in-person signing ceremony is scheduled for Friday in Geneva, Trump said Monday.
While the United States and Iran have both been touting wins in the deal, no actual text has been released — making it impossible to parse who’s telling the truth and leaving U.S. lawmakers clamoring for more details.
“Trump must release the details publicly, brief Congress immediately and end this war for good,” Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a statement Monday.
Meanwhile, Sen. Lindsey Graham…

Republicans raise concerns that Trump's Iran deal could ... - MS NOW
As President Donald Trump and Iran move forward with a memorandum of understanding to end the war, many congressional Republicans areexpressing uneaseabout what the emerging deal means for the United States.
But several Republicans have also expressed concern with what the agreement means for another country: Israel.
Several Republicans told MS NOW they are particularly distraught with a provision calling for an “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon” — language they fear could constrain Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah.
In recent weeks, Israel hascontinued strikes on southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah there. Israel evenstruck Lebanonafter the memorandum was announced.
When MS NOW asked Republicans on Thursday if the Iran deal was good for Israel, GOP lawmakers expressed a number of worries.
Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., took issue with the fact that Israel seemed to have been cut out of the negotiations, saying he’d like to find out what the Trump administration’s “thought process” was on that.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, similarly took issue with I…

President Donald Trump's newly announced agreement with Iran is facing scrutiny not only from Democrats but also from some of his Republican allies, raising questions about whether Congress could slow, reshape, or possibly try and block portions of the deal.
Trump on Sunday announced that the United States and Iran
had reached an agreement
, with a formal signing ceremony expected later this week. The president confirmed on Monday that the deal was "all signed." The administration has described the arrangement as a memorandum of understanding (MOU) tied to a ceasefire and a framework for future negotiations, including discussions related to Iran's nuclear program.
While many Republicans have praised Trump's efforts to end hostilities with Iran, some GOP
lawmakers have signaled concerns
about the deal's details and have argued Congress should play a role in reviewing any agreement that could invo…

The president told reporters he would like to get *** more formal setting first before releasing what the administration is calling *** memorandum of understanding or MOU. Now this is leading to confusion and skepticism from some members of Congress who have not been briefed on what's in the deal. I certainly have not yet, although we are requesting that, and I assume we will at some point hear from the administration with greater specificity about what's in that memorandum. Uh, I mean, we're all hearing in generalities what's been reported so far. I'm calling on Trump to immediately tell the American people on whatever is in his so-called deal. He needs…

Schumer, D-…

WASHINGTON, June 16 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he was willing to send his interim deal to end the war with Iran for review by the U.S. Congress, as lawmakers, including many of his fellow Republicans, said they were largely in the dark about the pact.
The U.S.-Iran agreement, announced on Sunday, has spurred optimism that a conflict that has killed thousands and disrupted the global economy will soon end.
According to officials from both countries, the memorandum of understanding would extend a tenuous ceasefire announced in April by another 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route effectively blocked since the U.S. and Israel began attacking Iran on February 28.
But the details remain unclear and the text of the pact has not been released or sent t…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans on Capitol Hill said Monday they need more information about the agreement between the United States and Iran announced by President Donald Trump, and some are expressing skepticism as they ask the White House for details.
The agreement announced Sunday to end the war in Iran, set for a ceremonial signing Friday in Geneva, is centered around reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the United States’ naval blockade in the region, along with financial incentives for Iran if it meets certain benchmarks. But Senate Republicans and Democrats who returned to Washington on Monday said there were still many unanswered questions about the deal and they need thorough briefings before it is finalized.
“I just don’t know enough about it,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., told reporters in the Capitol. “Even the people who follow this stuff closely up here don’t know that much about it.”
Congressional leaders and intelligence committees generally receive higher-level intelligence briefings before rank-and-file members, and they are notified of major deve…

President Trump says the Strait of Hormuz will be fully open by Friday, following an
initial agreement
struck between the U.S. and Iran.
So far neither side has released text showing exactly what's in the agreement, but the president claims he will read it word for word for the media in just a couple of days.
President Trump said he hadn't considered sending the agreement to Congress.
"Whatever I say, they want to do the opposite. It's not working too well for them," he told reporters at the G7 conference.
But "I will send it to them," he said. "I like the idea."

Trump's Iran Agreement Draws More Alarm Than Relief From GOP - TIME
The DC Brief
Twice A Week
Making sense of what matters most in Washington.
Even before the White House released the
actual text
of its agreement with Iran on Wednesday, leaked snippets were getting a lot of Republicans nervous. Allowing Iran to sell oil again? Lifting sanctions? A $300 billion economic development deal? Five months after
joining Israe
l in starting a war that he predicted would be over quickly, President Donald Trump is hurtling toward a ceasefire that some in his party are struggling to defend.
In fact, almost no one in Washington seems particularly excited about this deal, either the outdated version that leaked late yesterday, or the official one a Senior U.S. Official
read aloud on a call with reporters today. Many downright hate it. And in private, more than a few nat-sec nerds on the Hill say this looks an awful lot like the early stages of where the Obama Administration ended up landing.
Which wouldn’t necessarily be so terrible if Trump wasn’t the one who
lit that deal on fire
during his first term.
Yet to be clear, this agreement—due to be signed on Friday in Switzerland—is far from the c…

President Donald Trump
and other world leaders have welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran; however, the deal has been met with mixed reactions among lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
