India has witnessed one of its driest starts to the monsoon season in more than a century, with June rainfall falling significantly below normal levels. According to data released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday, the country recorded its fifth driest June since record-keeping began in 1901, highlighting the impact of a delayed southwest monsoon on weather conditions and agricultural activity.

June 2026 set to be fifth driest-ever since 1901; monsoon advance over ...
With more than 43 per cent deficit, and just two more days remaining, this month of June is now quite likely to emerge as one of the driest ever.
June, the first month of the monsoon season, is expected to bring about 165.3 mm of rainfall, which is the long-period average, for the country as a whole. Since 1901, since when rainfall records for India are available, there have been only four years when the June rainfall has been below 100 mm — 1905, 1926, 2009 and 2014. The driest June was in 2009 when India received just 87.5 mm rainfall.
This year, until Sunday, the country has recorded only 85.2 mm rainfall.
Such a large deficit for June is likely to force a reassessment of the seasonal forecast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted 92% rainfall for June, and 90% for the four-month monsoon season. The remaining months are likely to get impacted by the El Nino which is yet to reach its peak, and is continuing to gain in strength.
Three of the four years which saw June rainfall below 100 mm — 1926, 2009 and 2014 — were also affected by El Nino. However, in 1926, the seasonal rainfall o…

El Niño and a Monsoon in Crisis: 64% Rainfall Deficit Grips India as Clouds Fail to Deliver
India’s southwest monsoon has stalled dramatically in mid-June 2026, delivering a sharp 64 per cent rainfall deficit amid unusual upper-atmospheric patterns, raising alarms for agriculture, water security, and the economy.
India’s much-anticipated southwest monsoon, which typically brings life-giving rains to vast swathes of the subcontinent, has entered a perplexing and concerning phase in June 2026. An atmospheric ‘Tug-of-War’ has halted the progress of the monsoon.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country has recorded only 19.2 mm of rainfall between June 4 and June 15 against a normal of 53.7 mm, resulting in a nationwide deficit of 64 per c…

IMD Monsoon 2026: Critical Risks of Below-Normal Rainfall
India and the monsoon have always had this complicated relationship. We wait for it, we celebrate when it arrives, we panic when it is late, and we quietly hold our breath every single year, hoping it shows up properly. This year, that breath might need to be held a little longer.
On May 29, the India Meteorological Department revised its 2026 monsoon prediction, and the update was not good. The earlier April forecast was already on the cautious side, but this new one is notably worse. In this blog, we will explore IMD’s take on the monsoon this year, El Niño’s impact, its overall impact on India, and your investments.
When IMD first put out its forecast back in April, the prediction was 92% of the Long Period Average, which most weather folks just call LPA. The LPA is basically the average rainfall India has received over 50 years, between 1971 and 2020, and it comes to roughly 87 centimetres nationally.
At 92%, things were concerning but manageable. Then came May 29.
IMD has now revised the India monsoon forecast for 2026 to90% of LPA. Technically, that is just a two-point drop, and on paper, it sounds minor. But here…

Monsoon arrives in India: Heavy rain lashes Delhi, Mumbai; to spread to northern, western states
Delhi finally welcomed the southwest monsoon on Thursday, five days past its usual arrival, bringing much-needed relief from heat. The monsoon is now widespread across northwest India, with heavy rains expected in Maharashtra, Goa, and Gujarat. This marks the first July onset for Delhi since 2021, as the monsoon rapidly advances, nearing full country coverage ahead of schedule.

Monsoon has now covered entire India, July records 42% excess rain
The southwest monsoon has officially covered the entire country, marking the completion of its seasonal advance after an unusually slow start that had sparked concerns over a prolonged dry spell.
The turnaround has been equally dramatic, withIndia recording 42% excess rainfallbetween July 1 and July 8, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The monsoon reached the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi on July 9, completing its advance across the country. Normally, the southwest monsoon covers the entire nation by July 8, making this year's progress only marginally delayed despite the prolonged pause witnessed during June.
The rapid revival comes after the monsoon had virtually stalled for nearly three weeks, leading to one of the driest starts to the rainy season in more than a century.
Weak cross-equatorial winds, a sluggish monsoon trough and the emergence of a strong El Nio had significantly hampered rainfall during June.
However, a series of low-pressure systems over central India and the Bay of Bengal helpedrevive the monsoon circulationduring the first week of July, bringing wi…

Monsoon Reaches Kerala Three Days Late as Storms Sweep 24 States
India’s southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on Thursday — three days behind schedule. The India Meteorological Department confirmed the entry, triggering heavy rain alerts across the southern coast while pre-monsoon storms continued battering states as far north as Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
The monsoon normally reaches Kerala on June 1. IMD had initially forecast an early arrival on May 26. Instead, it crossed the coast on June 4, setting the tone for a season that has already tested the country’s patience.
IMD issued a seven-day heavy rain forecast for Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka following the monsoon’s landfall. Orange alerts — signalling very heavy rainfall between 11 and 20 centimetres — are active for the Kerala districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam.
Heavy rain is also expected across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, and Karaikal through Saturday.
While the south receives the monsoon, pre-monsoon storms are doing serious damage across central and northern states. Thunderstorm alerts are active in 24 states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttara…

Monsoon hit Kerala on June 4, but state still faces 32% rain deficit ...
The southwest monsoon may have arrived over Kerala on June 4, but nearly three weeks later, the state continues to grapple with a significant rainfall shortfall, raising concerns over water availability, hydropower generation, and electricity supply.
According to the latest rainfall data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kerala has received 317.3 mm of rain against a normal of 466.1 mm between June 4 and June 24, leaving the state with a rainfall deficit of 32 per cent. The shortfall persists despite the monsoon's timely onset and intermittent spells of heavy rain.
Satellite imagery from INSAT-3DS on Tuesday showed cloud activity concentrated over parts of eastern and northeastern India, while much of peninsular India, including Kerala, remainedunder comparatively sparse cloud cover.
The pattern reflects the uneven distribution of monsoon rainfall that has characterised the season so far.

Good news for monsoon-hit India! A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is set to boost rainfall across central and western regions for the next five days, significantly reducing the deficit. While this brings relief for sowing, authorities are on alert for potential extreme weather events, with red alerts issued for several states. Monsoon is also advancing into northwest India, with full country coverage expected soon.

Monsoon arrives in Kerala three days late, IMD predicts steady advance across India | India News
The Southwest Monsoon arrived over Kerala on Thursday, three days after its normal onset date and five days after IMD’s forecast date, and it is likely to cover most parts of India by the third week of June, although concerns remain about the volume of rainfall.
Monsoonnormally arrives overKerala around June 1. IMD had forecast on May 15 that this year, the southwest monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala on May 26 with a model error of ± 4 days. IMD has also predicted that monsoon rainfall this year will be 90% of the long period average, which translates into abelow-normal monsoon. Still worse, IMD has said there is a 60% probability of a deficient monsoon, rainfall that is less than 90% of LPA.
But its onset over Kerala, a milestone in its progress, will bring some cheer in a country where 51% of farmed area, accounting for 40% of production, is rain-fed.

Monsoon covers entire India; recieves 195.5 mm of rainfall
NEW DELHI: The Southwest Monsoon covered the entire country on July 9, one day later than its normal arrival date of July 8, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. It is the first time since 2011 that the monsoon has covered the entire country on July 9.
The monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, three days later than the normal onset date of June 1.
Last year, the monsoon covered the entire country by June 29, nine days ahead of schedule, and seasonal rainfall was 108% of the long period average (LPA).
This year, the IMD has forecast below-normal rainfall of about 90% of the LPA during the June-September monsoon season due to the emergence of a strong El Niño, which is associated with weaker monsoon rainfall over India.
India recorded a rainfall deficit of 40% of the LPA in June, with 99.5 mm of rainfall, the fifth lowest for the month. However, rainfall during July has reduced the deficit to 15.2% as of July 9.
So far, the country has received 195.5 mm of rainfall against the normal 230.4 mm.
In a statement issued on July 9, the IMD said the Southwest Monsoon had advanced into the remaining parts of the north A…

IMD predicts 'below normal' monsoon for first time in a decade: Why ...
The country is expected to receive ‘below normal’ rainfall in this year’s monsoon season, with a developing El Nino, a phenomenon in the eastern Pacific Ocean that influences global weather patterns, likely to play spoilsport, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday.
India receives more than 70 per cent of its annual rainfall during the four-month monsoon season (June-September), with July and August contributing the most. These rains are not just crucial for irrigation of large parts of India’s cropped land, it is also significant for meeting the demands of drinking water, hydroelectricity generation and groundwater recharge. Bad rainfall can impact agricultural outputs, power generation, rural incomes, and economic demand.
The early forecast by IMD, a month and a half before the start of the season, helps governments prepare for these contingencies.
In its first long-range forecast for the coming season, the IMD said monsoon rainfall over India as a whole was likely to be 92 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA). The LPA, or the average rainfall over the 50-year period (1971-2020) during th…

Monsoon update: Bihar, Odisha, Sikkim, parts of west Bengal, East Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh are on orange alert today due to possibility of heavy rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Over monsoon update, the weather agency said conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, remaining parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next three days.
IMD in its latest press release warned against “heavy to very heavy rainfall” along the west coast, over northeast India and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the week. “Isolated extremely heavy rainfall also likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on 27th to 29th and over Assam & Meghalaya on 28th June, 2026,” the report stated. Additionally, heavy downpour is likely in Bihar till 30 June and in Odisha from 28 June to 1 July.

Southwest Monsoon Covers Entire India After Slowest Advance In Five Years
The southwest monsoon has covered the entire country, completing its advance on Thursday, around 35 days after arriving over the Kerala coast. The progress marks one of the slowest nationwide advances of the monsoon in the past five years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The last time the monsoon took longer to cover the country was in 2021, when it reached Kerala on June 3 and completed its journey across India on July 13, taking nearly 40 days.
This year, the southwest monsoon arrived over Kerala on June 4, about three days later than its normal onset date. It eventually covered the entire country on July 9, according to IMD data.
After a sluggish start, monsoon activity improved significantly in July, helping reduce the overall rainfall deficit. The cumulative shortfall, which had widened to nearly 30% by June 30, declined to around 15% by July 8 following strong rainfall activity over western and central India.

said on Tuesday in its monthly forecast.
The weather department stated that July is most likely to see 94 per cent of the long-period average rainfall (1971-2020). The LPA rainfall over India in July is about 280.4 mm.
LPA refers to the rainfall recorded over a particular region for a given period, such as a month or a season, averaged over a long period, typically 30 to 50 years.
Some areas of northwest and northeast India, east-central India and the eastern peninsular region are likely to receive normal to above rainfall, the IMD said.
In a statement, Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of meteorology at the IMD, said, "During July, below-normal rainfall is likely across most parts of the country except some areas of northwest and northeast India, east-central India and the eastern peninsular region, where normal to above-normal rainfall is likely."

IMD's El Niño warning casts shadow over Goa monsoon
PANAJI
Goa could face an uneven and weaker monsoon this year, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that El Niño conditions are likely to develop during the southwest monsoon season, even as much of the country, including Goa, is expected to receive below normal rainfall.
The arrival of the south-west monsoon has already been delayed.
In its updated long-range forecast released on Thursday, the IMD said the country as a whole is likely to receive only 90 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall during the June-September monsoon season, indicating below normal rainfall across large parts of India.
The South Peninsula region has also been placed in the below-normal rainfall category.
The weather agency further said that neutral El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions over the Pacific Ocean are “transitioning towards El Niño conditions” and that climate models indicate El Niño is likely to develop during the monsoon season.
The development is being closely watched because El Niño years are often associated with weaker and erratic monsoons in India, which has raised concerns over water ava…

Monsoon arrived but India stayed dry: How 5 weather systems caused June ...
The monsoon has arrived. Much of India is still waiting for the rain.
That contradiction defined June 2026, one of the driest Junes in 146 years of record-keeping. The southwest monsoon reached the Kerala coast on June 4, a little behind schedule, and by June 15 had covered most of the south, east and northeast. Then it stalled.
For nearly a fortnight, the skies went quiet over large parts of the country, and India ran a rainfall shortfall of more than 40 per cent, with central India over 60 per cent below normal.
The rains have since revived in some regions, but thedeficit built up in Junewill take time to erase.
The monsoon rarely fails for one reason. This time, five rain-suppressing systems lined up together.
The first is a weak Madden-Julian Oscillation, or MJO, a vast pulse of clouds and thunderstorms that circles the equator every 30 to 60 days. When it parks over the Indian Ocean, it switches the rain on. In June, it drifted away and took the trigger with it.
The second is a feeble Somali Jet, the low-level wind that races across the equator from East Africa and carries moisture from the Arab…

IMD forecasts below-normal Southwest Monsoon Rainfall this year
The southwest monsoon seasonal rainfall from June to September is expected to be below normal this year. Briefing media in New Delhi today, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Dr Mrityunjaya Mohapatra said that the seasonal rainfall over the country is likely to be 92% of the long period average (LPA) with a model error of ±5%. He said that weak La Niña conditions are currently transitioning to El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) neutral conditions over the equatorial Pacific. He added that the Monsoon Mission Climate Forecast System suggests the development of El Niño conditions during the southwest Monsoon season. He further said that IMD will issue the updated forecasts for monsoon season rainfall in the last week of next month.

India to get below-normal rain in July, El Nino to grip monsoon
India's southwest monsoon is likely to remain under pressure in July, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting below-normal rainfall across most parts of the country as El Nino conditions continue to strengthen over the equatorial Pacific Ocean.
Releasing its monthly outlook on Tuesday, the IMD said rainfall over the country during July 2026 is most likely to be below normal, with precipitation expected to be less than 94% of the Long Period Average (LPA). The long-term average rainfall for July, based on data from 1971 to 2020, stands at 280.4 mm.
The forecast comes afterIndia recorded one of its driest Junesin more than a century, with rainfall ending 39% below normal and June 2026 becoming the fifth-driest June since 1901.
According to the IMD's probability forecast, below-normal rainfall is likely over most parts of the country, including large areas of central, western and northern India. However, some regions are expected to escape the widespread deficit.
The weather office said parts of northwest India, east-central India and the eastern peninsular region are likely to receive normal to ab…

Monsoon back on track: IMD flags intense rainfall across India
India’s weather is entering a crucial transition phase, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting fresh monsoon advancement, widespread rainfall in several regions, and a heightened risk of extreme precipitation in the Northeast over the coming days.
As the southwest monsoon regains momentum after a temporary slowdown, weather agencies are warning of contrasting conditions across different parts of the country.
Heavy rain alert for Northeast India
The most significant weather concern remains Northeast India, where the IMD has warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall until June 25. States across the region are likely to experience persistent rain spells, raising concerns over flooding, landslides, transport disruptions, and damage to infrastructure. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are also expected to witness intense rainfall activity through June 22.

India's southwest monsoon season has officially begun, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns that 2026 may deliver one of the weaker rains in recent years. The monsoon reached Kerala on 4 June — three days later than the normal date of 1 June and nine days after the IMD's predicted onset of 26 May — yet the seasonal outlook already points to below-normal totals, a sluggish advance into the interior and an El Niño shadow that could suppress rainfall through September.
The IMD's revised long-range forecast on 29 May projected seasonal rainfall at 90% of the long-period average (LPA) for June–September, down from 92% in its April first-stage outlook. Quantitatively, that implies roughly 782 mm (31 in) nationwide against an LPA of 868.6 mm (34 in) based on the 1971–2020 baseline — firmly in the below-normal category, with a 60% probability of a deficit or deficient monsoon.

Thus, it has covered the entire country on July 9, 2026, against the normal date of July 8 (1 day after the normal date of covering the entire India),” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement.
The monsoon has covered the entire country in June only six times since 2000, the earliest was on June 16 in 2013, when the seasonal rainfall for the entire year was 106 per cent of normal. The most delayed coverage was in 2002, when the monsoon cov…

Monsoon 2026 has arrived, but India's rain season begins under El Niño ...
The Southwest Monsoon 2026 reached Kerala on 4 June 2026, three days later than normal and nine days after the IMD’s forecast date.
IMD has forecast below-normal rainfall at 90% of the long-period average, with a 60% chance of a deficit or deficient monsoon.
The weather agency expects El Niño conditions to develop during the monsoon season, a pattern that usually suppresses rainfall over India.
NOAA forecasts suggest the 2026 El Niño could become very strong and may persist until the Northern Hemisphere winter of 2026-27.
Neutral Indian Ocean Dipole conditions and the possible return of active western disturbances could further complicate rainfall patterns and extreme weather risks.
Monsoon 2026 has finally reached Kerala, but the bigger question is what happens next as El Niño builds over the Pacific and India faces the risk of below-normal rainfall.
The Southwest Monsoon began over the state on June 4, 2026, three days later than its normal date of 1 June and nine days later than the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast date of May 26, 2026 with several weather threats looming ahead.

Telangana Likely To See Below-Normal Monsoon, More Heatwave Days
Hyderabad:Telangana is likely to witness below-normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season this year, while isolated parts of the state may also experience above-normal heatwave days in June, according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) updated long-range forecast released on Saturday evening.
The IMD said South Peninsular India, which includes Telangana, is likely to receive below-normal rainfall during the June to September monsoon season, with rainfall projected to remain below 94 per cent of the long period average (LPA, based on rainfall data comprising 50 years till 2020).
The forecast comes as the country as a whole is expected to receive 90% of the LPA during the monsoon season, indicating below-normal rainfall nationally. The IMD said there is an 84% probability of below-normal or deficient rainfall across the country this monsoon.
For June, the weather agency forecast below-normal rainfall over most parts of the country, though some parts of South Peninsular India could still receive normal to above-normal rain. Forecast maps released by the IMD showed mixed rainfall signals over part…

After forecasting widespread monsoon activity over the next fortnight, India Meteorological Department has indicated that rainfall could weaken in the second half of July, with most parts of the country likely to receive below-normal rainfall if the current extended-range forecasts hold.According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD)'s Extended Range Prediction System (ERPS), the first two weeks of July are expected to bring good rainfall over the west coast and parts of central India, aided by a favourable monsoon circulation. Projections for the third and fourth weeks of the month, however, indicate below-normal rainfall over much of the country, though officials stressed that this does not imply a complete break in rainfall.
"The coming two weeks, till around July 14, are showing good rainfall over the west coast and parts of central India. Thereafter, the current extended-range guidance suggests below-normal rainfall over most parts of the country," IMD scientist SD Sanap told TOI.IMD said during July 9-15, rainfall is likely to be near normal over the country as a whole. It is also likely to be…

Indian monsoon reaches Kerala, three days later than usual
Monsoon rains hit the coast of India's southernmost state of Kerala on Thursday, three days later than usual, the weather office said, offering respite from a gruelling heatwave that had raised power demand to a record high.
The June-September monsoon rains, critical for economic growth in Asia's third-largest economy, usually begin to lash Kerala around June 1 before covering the entire country by mid-July, allowing farmers to plant crops such as rice, corn, cotton, soybeans and sugarcane.
The monsoon is essential to India's nearly $4 trillion economy, delivering almost 70% of the rainfall needed to water farms and replenish aquifers and reservoirs.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rains in Northeast India, East India and Northwest India till 19 June. The weather office has also said that the conditions are becoming favourable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon over some more parts of south Peninsular and East India and adjoining areas from next week during 18 -21 June.
Speaking of heat wave conditions, it said that conditions very likely to continue in isolated pockets over Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh during next week.
As per IMD, in Northeast India, widespread light to moderate rainfall is predicted at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely over the region during the week. "Isolated extremely heavy rainfall also likely over Arunachal Pradesh on 15th & 16th and Assam & Meghalaya during 15-17 June, it said.

India braces for wet September; IMD warns of flash floods, landslides
India is likely to receive above-normal rainfall in September, capping a season that has already seen several disasters triggered by heavy downpours in many parts of the country.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday that the monthly average rainfall in September 2025 is expected to be more than 109 per cent of the long-period average of 167.9 mm.
The forecast suggests most regions will get normal to above-normal rainfall, while some parts of the northeast and east, many areas of extreme south peninsular India and pockets of northwest India are likely to record below-normal rain.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra warned that heavy rainfall may trigger landslides and flash floods in Uttarakhand in September and could disrupt normal life in south Haryana, Delhi and north Rajasthan.
"Many rivers originate in Uttarakhand. So, heavy rainfall means many rivers will be flooded and it will impact cities and towns downstream. So, we should keep this in mind," he said.
He added that heavy rainfall is also expected in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River in Chhattisgarh.

PANAJI: The southwest monsoon is expected to arrive in Goa later than its usual schedule this year, as its progress over the Arabian Sea remains slower than normal.
Weather experts indicate that the seasonal rain system has not advanced as quickly as anticipated due to unfavourable atmospheric conditions over the southern Arabian Sea. As a result, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its forecast for the monsoon’s entry into Kerala, now expecting it between June 2 and June 4.
Since the monsoon generally takes several days to move from Kerala to Goa, the state’s traditional onset date of June 5 is now unlikely to be met.
The IMD has said that conditions remain supportive for further advancement of the monsoon into Kerala in the coming days. However, officials noted that a clearer picture regarding Goa’s onset date will emerge only after the system becomes firmly established over the neighbouring state.
In the meantime, scattered pre-monsoon showers are…

HYDERABAD: Residents of Telangana must consider staying on high alert as meteorologists warn of a deep depression forming in the Bay of Bengal, expected to affect the region later this week.
The weather system is predicted to bring very heavy to extremely heavy rains on September 26 and 27, potentially disrupting normal life across the state.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure system is likely to form over the west-central Bay of Bengal on September 25. This may intensify into a depression by September 26, making it the first depression of this year’s monsoon season.
“This is the first time we are hearing that a low-pressure system will develop into a depression this year. So far, we saw around five to six low-pressure systems during this monsoon, but none developed into a depression,” a senior IMD official told TNIE.
So far, most parts of the state have remained dry despite the yellow alert on Wednesday, with the mercury touching 35°C.

India is likely to receive below-normal rainfall during the 2026 southwest monsoon season, according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) updated
long-range forecast
released on Thursday. The forecast projects seasonal rainfall at 90 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA), with a model error margin of plus or minus four percent, indicating an increased likelihood of rainfall deficiency across large parts of the country during the crucial June to September monsoon period.
The southwest monsoon delivers nearly three-quarters of India’s annual rainfall and plays a vital role in agriculture, water security, hydropower generation and rural livelihoods. The latest forecast suggests that the country may face a challenging monsoon season, particularly in key rain-fed agricultural regions.
According to IMD, there is an 84 percent probability that seasonal rainfall will be either below normal or deficient at the national level. Of this, the probability of deficient rainfall, defined as less than 90 percent of the LPA, stands at 60 percent, while the probability of below-normal rainfall ranges at 24 percent. …

Monsoon Tracker: Driest June since 2009 as rainfall deficit hits 43% ...
With a monsoon rainfall deficit of over 43% as on Sunday, June 2026 is on course to be third driest of corresponding months since 1901 and the driest since 2009, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data.
During June 1–June 28, 2026, overall rainfall received across the country has been 85.2 millimeter (mm) against the benchmark long period average (LPA) of 149.8 mm, the met department stated. Last month,IMDforecast a ‘below normal’ rainfall at less than 92% of LPA in June.
According to the projection, overall rainfall in June is likely to be around 95 mm, making it driest since 2009, the year when monthly precipitation was only 85.7 mm, 47% below the benchmark.
Earlier, the country received scanty rainfalls in June 2014 (95.3 mm) and June 1905 (87.4 mm), when the monthly precipitation deficits were 44. The country usually gets around 16% of monsoon season (April-June) rainfall in June.
The progress of the southwest monsoon remained sluggish with cumulative rainfall being just over 43% of the benchmark. This is deep in the ‘deficient’ range. In terms of regional distribution, all regions …
