Kayode Ojo, a governorship aspirant on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2026 election in Ekiti State, has pledged to rescue the state from alleged stagnation, mismanagement and exclusionary politics. In an interaction with journalists, he promised inclusive development, youth empowerment and strategic infrastructure reforms. SEYE OLUMIDE was there.
Why did you decide to join the Ekiti governorship election race on the platform of the APC, which produced the incumbent governor of the state who is seeking re-election?
My decision to formally enter the 2026 Ekiti governorship race is not driven by personal ambition, nor by the influence of any political godfather or external endorsement. It is rather a solemn response to the heartfelt call of my people. Over the years, I have witnessed the yearnings of Ekiti citizens for genuine leadership – one rooted in service, not self-interest.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the incumbent governor of Ekiti State and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, as the winner of the 2026 Ekiti State governorship election.
By this feat, Oyebanji has made history as the first governor of the state to secure back-to-back re-election victories since the creation of Ekiti State in 1996.
He not only won the majority of votes cast but also secured victory in all 177 wards and the 16 local government areas of the state.
The Returning Officer for the election and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Professor Adenike Oladiji, announced the result in the early hours of Sunday at the INEC headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.
“That Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” Prof. Oladiji declared.

Today, no fewer than 1.02 million registered voters in Ekiti State will head to the polls in a high-stakes contest that will shape the state’s political and developmental trajectory for the next four years, as they decide who among the array of contenders will emerge victorious and occupy the Oke Ayoba seat of power.
Although 13 political parties are participating in the governorship election, pundits suggest that the race is largely a contest between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with other parties seeking to upset the dominance long enjoyed by the State’s two major political platforms.

Development across the world is rarely accidental. It is often the outcome of deliberate planning, clear vision and consistent leadership. While brilliance matters, leadership is more about capacity, direction and the ability to sustain progress over time.
For governments, development must be continuously measured and assessed to ensure that growth is steady and responsive to the needs of the people.
Since the inauguration of Governor Biodun Abiodun Oyebanji’s administration in October 2022, Ekiti State has recorded several policy actions and development initiatives. Using commonly applied good-governance benchmarks, the administration’s performance over the last three years can be assessed across key sectors.

AHEAD of tomorrow’s election in Ekiti State, the Nigeria Police Force on Friday assured electorate of adequate security, noting that the force does not belong to any political party.
Also, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Mr Jimoh Moshood, who featured on Channels Television breakfast programme, hinted that the deployment of 30,000 personnel to Ekiti is to ensure adequate security in the nook and cranny of the state before and during the gubernatorial election.
According to him, “Going to Ekiti with 30,000 personnel is to ensure that everything is in order and to guarantee a secure environment for the electorates.

All hands are on deck as Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji is set to face challengers from 12 political parties in the June 20, 2026, governorship election.
The election, slated for Saturday is already won, going by activities and assessment of the 13 political parties that are eyeing the Oke Ayoba government House in Ado Ekiti.
For the past few months, the candidates and political parties cleared for the election, have attempted to sell themselves to less than a million voters in the state – what they have in stock, their strength and even their personality to the people.
The people are already charged and ready to exercise their civic duty to elect another governor, that will serve them for another four years. Since its creation, Ekiti state politics has been that of uncertainty and suspense, a situation that has led to defeat of three incumbent governors.
First was Adeniyi Adebayo, the first executive Governor, that…

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji on Tuesday expressed worries over the pockets of political violence in the state in the last week ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
Oyebanji, who blamed the violence on desperation in some quarters to occupy the governorship seat, said, “On our part, we want to assure our citizens that we are more than resolved to protect our state and to ensure no breakdown of laws and order.”
The governor spoke in a special statewide broadcast where he addressed the political violence that had crept into the erstwhile peaceful state, saying, “The recent incident is therefore a condemnable drawback that must not be allowed to fester”.
He said, “A couple of days ago, we received the intelligence that some individuals have paid media hirelings from outside the state to commence coordinated media attacks on our administration through orchestrated false accusations.
“We thought the whole plan w…

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has congratulated Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, on his re-election, describing his victory as historic and a clear endorsement of his administration’s leadership and developmental strides.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC noted that Governor Oyebanji’s triumph is particularly significant as it makes him the first incumbent governor in Ekiti State’s contemporary democratic history to secure re-election.
The ruling party said the outcome of the election demonstrates the confidence and trust the people of Ekiti have in Oyebanji’s visionary leadership, people-centred policies and unwavering commitment to the development and progress of the state.
The APC also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other election stakeholders for their professio…

Ekiti 2026 Governorship Poll: APC's Oyebanji Leads Race Amid Unusually ...
The keenly contested nature of governorship elections in Ekiti State may be conspicuously missing in the June 20, 2026 poll, as political dynamics and electoral indicators increasingly point to a race heavily tilted in favour of the ruling party, AYODELE AFOLABI writes.
Less than nine days to the June 20 governorship election in Ekiti State, the atmosphere in the Land of Honour and Integrity remains unusually calm, a sharp contrast to the tension, fierce rivalry and political hostilities that have traditionally characterised governorship contests in the state since Nigeria's return to democratic rule in 1999.
Historically, Ekiti governorship elections have been among the most fiercely contested in the country, often producing intense campaigns, dramatic political realignments and nail-biting finishes. This year's election, however, appears markedly different. Despite the presence of 13 political parties and their candidates on the ballot, the race is increasingly being viewed as a one-horse contest, with the incumbent governor, Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), enjoying a commanding ad…

Ekiti at Three: Oyebanji's Dream vs. Hard Truths
Ado-Ekiti, Nov 21, 2025
— As Governor
Biodun Oyebanji
marks his third year in office in Ekiti State, the verdict is mixed: genuine progress, but haunted by structural and political realities. The honeymoon may be over — but for some, the administration still delivers.
From Sentiment to Steel: The Man Behind the Office
Oyebanji’s rise carried weighty symbolism. He’s the first truly “home-grown” governor since 1999 — educated in Ekiti, rooted in its history. He once served as secretary of the very committee that created the state, and later as Personal Assistant to its first civilian governor, Niyi Adebayo. His political loyalty is ironclad; even as his party morphed, he held firm.
In his governing style, he’s gutted the pomp of the office. People close to government say he doesn’t hide from reality: he listens, he asks, he confronts grim truths. He’s not the untouchable governor; he’s the man in the trenches — hands dirty, ears open.
Forging Unity — But Not Without Skeptics
One of Oyebanji’s early wins was political reconciliation. He reached across party lines. He brought in former governors. He made peace with opinion leaders. For …

EKITI State Governor Biodun Oyebanji
faces challengers from 10 political parties in the June 20, 2026, governorship election. Observers say it is a contest poised to test political strength, governance record, and voter sentiment across the state.
The election, one of Nigeria’s off-cycle governorship contests, will see the incumbent governor seek a second four-year term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), with his deputy, Monisade Afuye, retained as his running mate.
Party primaries for the election were conducted between October 20 and November 10, 2025, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) subsequently publishing provisional and final candidate lists ahead of the poll.
The election umpire had earlier

Biodun Oyebanji Becomes First Ekiti Governor to Win Re-election - Nigeria
Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made history by becoming the first incumbent governor in Ekiti State to win re-election. The 2026 governorship election saw Oyebanji defeat 13 other candidates, including PDP's Wole Oluyede and ADC's Oluwadare Bejide. Since Ekiti was created in 1996, no governor had served two consecutive terms, although Ayo Fayose and Kayode Fayemi both returned for second stints after leaving office. The election is widely seen as a major litmus test for INEC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Key Points:
Oyebanji's victory breaks a 30-year jinx; no Ekiti governor has ever won consecutive terms.
The election served as a critical test for INEC's preparedness for the 2027 general elections.
The APC's dominance in all 16 LGAs signals strong voter approval for the incumbent.
The result may shape political strategies for the 2027 elections across Nigeria.
The peaceful conduct of the election reflects Ekiti's democratic maturity.
Oyebanji will now prepare for his second term. The opposition parties will review their strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ekiti 2026 Governorship Election: CDD-West Africa Pre-Election ...
The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa), through its Election Analysis Centre (CDD-EAC), has closely monitored developments leading up to the 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election. The Centre notes that the election represents a significant test of Nigeria’s electoral institutions, democratic resilience, and political environment ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
CDD-West Africa's assessment indicates that the pre-election environment remains generally peaceful, with no widespread incidents of political violence reported. However, concerns remain regarding declining electoral competitiveness, voter apathy, vote buying, misinformation, disinformation and hate speech, as well as the impact of prevailing economic hardship on voter behaviour. While major security threats have not emerged, stakeholders must remain vigilant against localized incidents of intimidation or disruption, and security agencies must continue to act professionally and impartially.
The Centre observes that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) enters the election with considerable advantages arising from incumbency, e…

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming Osun State governorship election, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, has congratulated Ekiti State governor, Mr. Abiodun Oyebanji, on his re-election victory, describing the outcome as a clear endorsement of the governor’s performance in office.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Oyebanji winner of the governorship election after he secured the highest number of valid votes and met the constitutional requirements.
According to the electoral umpire, the incumbent governor polled 319,224 votes to defeat his closest rivals, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) garnering 40,533 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secured 12,872 votes.
However, in a statement personally signed and made available to journalists shortly after the declaration of the results, Oyebamiji said the landslide victory recorded by Governor Oyebanji in the election reflected the confidence reposed in him by the people of Ekiti State owing to his developmental strides since assuming off…

While there is more work to be done, and no doubt there are contenders for the same seat, it is crystal clear that Governor Oyebanji’s administration has demonstrated vision, strategic planning, and a people-centered approach that has delivered measurable results across education, agriculture, social welfare, security, road infrastructure, and economic development. In just three years, his administration has set a standard of excellence that distinguishes Ekiti State among its peers in Nigeria and beyond.
Education has been a cornerstone of Governor Oyebanji’s agenda, reflecting his commitment to shaping a future-ready generation. The Governor has restated the administration’s commitment t…

OYEBANJI’S THREE REMARKABLE YEARS OF SHARED PROSPERITY IN EKITI
OYEBANJI’S THREE REMARKABLE YEARS OF SHARED PROSPERITY IN EKITI
By Odunayo Ogunmola
It has been three years that Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has mounted the number one seat in Ekiti State has his performance so far has delighted the people across the length and breadth of the Land of Honour.
Oyebanji, who was sworn into office on the 16th of October, 2022 is arguably the most prepared governor in the history of the state and this assisted him in hitting the ground running with policies that meet the need of the people.
With previous roles as Special Assistant, Special Adviser, Chief of Staff, Commissioner, Director General and Secretary to the State Government, Oyebanji had acquired the requisite experience that would enable him to perform as the Chief Executive of the State.
Armed with a development blueprint codenamed six-pillar agenda, Oyebanji did not waste time in getting down into business with his mission statement which is also in sync with the 30-year Ekiti Development Agenda as developed by the founding fathers of the state and also adopted by the immediate past administration.
The major components of the six pillars are Governance, Youth Development and Job Creatio…

Ekiti at Three Under Oyebanji: Performance, Stability, and a Compelling ...
Ekiti’s last three years tell a clear story: purposeful leadership, measurable results, and a governance style anchored on people-first delivery. Governor Biodun Oyebanji has combined vision with disciplined execution across education, roads, agriculture, welfare, security, and economic development—setting a benchmark among peer states and building a credible case for continuity.
Education sits at the heart of this progress. Through the World Bank–supported AGILE programme, over ₦14 billion has strengthened infrastructure and digital access across all 203 public secondary schools—from renovated classrooms and modern labs to safer, gender-sensitive learning spaces. WAEC has commended Ekiti’s readiness for CBT-based WASSCE, reflecting stronger exam integrity and digital competence. The administration has also funded running grants, exam fees, and instructional materials; 2,000+ teachers have been recruited and upskilled, while ₦596.6m in car and housing loans has boosted staff morale and retention.
On roads, the administration has treated connectivity as the backbone of growth: ₦200bn+ in contracts covering …

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji
Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji
In what could be described as the beginning of a major crack in the political circle of Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, ahead of governorship election in 2026, a member of the state’s Waste Management Board, Wale Ade-Oba, has publicly dumped Oyebanji and pledged to work with Kayode Ojo in realisation of the latter’s gubernatorial ambition.
Alade-Oba, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti, yesterday, expressed his readiness to work with Ojo, the current University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Pro-Chancellor, to develop the state after the first term of Oyebanji.
“I am writing to share with you a personal decision that may surprise many. As you know, I have been serving as an appointee under the current administration led by Governor Biodun Oyebanji. However, after much reflection, I have decided to join forces with Kayode Ojo, a leader with a vision for a better Ekiti,” he said.
The politician a…
