Residents at the epicentre of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC’s) Ebola outbreak are pinning their hopes on experimental treatments after researchers began a highly anticipated study in early July of two possible Ebola treatments in hopes of fighting the still-growing outbreak.
At the Ebola treatment centre inside Bunia’s Evangelical Medical Centre, in eastern Congo’s Ituri province, the launch of the research was marked by urgency rather than ceremony on Thursday.

A health worker takes a woman's temperature as part of Ebola screening efforts in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo. As part of the effort to quash the outbreak, the first patients have been enrolled in a clinical trial to test two drugs against the Bundibugyo strain of the virus that is spreading there. In addition, researchers plan to study whether another drug could protect people exposed to the virus.
It's been over 50 days since the Ebola outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. Clinicians on the ground are working to save dying patients, but they lack crucial tools to fight the kind of Ebola that's spreading.
"We urgently need treatments that can help people affected by Bundibugyo virus disease," says
Amanda Rojek
, a physician scientist at the University of Oxford — that's a rarer species of Ebola than the much-researched Zaire strain behind many previous outbreaks.
But because of that rarity, there are no speciali…

Researchers began a highly anticipated study of two possibleEbolatreatments on Thursday in hopes of fighting the still-growingoutbreak in eastern Congo, as the World Health Organization announced the enrollment of the first participant.
The virus causing this outbreak, called Bundibugyo, is less common than others that cause Ebola disease and there are no specific treatments or vaccines for it. Already more than 1,400 people have been diagnosed and 438 have died, WHO Director-GeneralTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesussaid Thursday.
Standard supportive care, especially if started early, can help and the WHO says more than 200 people have recovered. But there’s …

WHO Launches Ebola Treatment Trial in Bundibugyo, DR Congo
The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially initiated a clinical study in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to evaluate new treatment protocols for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. This research effort, launched in July 2026, marks a significant development in public health efforts to address a strain that has historically presented unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in Central Africa. According to official health bulletins, the study aims to refine medical interventions specifically tailored to the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, which remains a focus of ongoing epidemiological surveillance by regional authorities and international partners.
Understanding the Bundibugyo Ebola Strain
The Bundibugyo ebolavirus is one of the five known species within the genus
Ebolavirus
. First identified during an outbreak in the Bundibugyo District of Uganda in 2007, this strain is distinct from the more widely studied Zaire ebolavirus, which has been responsible for the largest and most frequent outbreaks in history. Because each strain of the virus can interact differently with human immune systems, clinical re…

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday announced the start of patient enrolment for a major international clinical trial aimed at identifying the first effective treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), a strain of Ebola, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
In a post on its official X account, WHO said the Platform Adaptive Randomised Trial for New and Repurposed Filovirus Treatments (PARTNERS) will evaluate whether two antiviral therapies, the monoclonal antibody MBP134 and remdesivir, can improve survival among patients with confirmed BVD.
The organisation said researchers will also assess whether combining the two treatments provides greater clinical benefit.
The trial is sponsored by WHO and coordinated by the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) in the DRC, the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, and the University of Oxford, in collaboration with international research, clinical and humanitarian partners, with support from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a clinical trial of two potential treatments for the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo as efforts continue to contain the latest outbreak.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Thursday that the first patient has been enrolled in the trial.
“The clinical trial of two therapeutics began, with the enrolment of the first patient,” Dr. Tedros said during a press briefing in Geneva.
According to the WHO, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded more than 1,400 confirmed Ebola cases and 438 deaths since the outbreak began in May. Uganda has also confirmed cases linked to the same outbreak.
The WHO said the study is being carried out in partnership with the Democratic Republic of Congo’s National Institute for Biomedical Research, the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, and the University of Oxford i…
