Heavy rainfall last Wednesday caused widespread flooding across parts of Lagos, crippling vehicular movement and disrupting business activities in several communities.
Flood-prone areas such as Maryland, Lekki, Ogba, and Ikorodu were severely affected, with homes, shops, and places of worship submerged.
Online videos showed residents navigating waist-deep water, while vehicles stalled on flooded roads, compounding already gridlocked traffic and leaving many commuters stranded for hours.
Responding to the incident, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, acknowledged the city’s vulnerability due to its coastal nature.
He attributed the flooding in Lekki’s Kusenla axis to a drainage system malfunction, noting that a new pumping station is being developed to address the issue.
Wahab also cited illegal constructions and reckless refuse disposal as major contributors to flooding near House on the Rock church, warning that such violations would no longer be tolerated.

Torrential rainfall on Sunday caused widespread flash flooding across several parts of Lagos State, leaving major roads submerged, disrupting commercial activities, and forcing the temporary suspension of operations at a section of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).
The downpour, which lasted for several hours, stranded thousands of commuters as floodwaters overwhelmed major highways and residential areas. Many vehicles became trapped in the rising water, while residents abandoned commercial buses and continued their journeys on foot.
Among the worst-hit areas were Oshodi, Gbagada Expressway, Ilupeju Road, Obalende, Mushin, Surulere, Agege, Ikeja, Alimosho, and Egbeda, where roads were inundated and traffic movement slowed significantly.
In Mushin, floodwaters swept refuse onto major roads, blocking drainage channels and worsening the flooding. Along Akowonjo Road in Egbeda, a vehicle reportedly fell into a drainage channel concealed by floodwater, while sections of the Gbagada Expressway became impassable for several hours.
The flooding also disrupted operations at the temporary internation…

Videos circulating on social media showed residents wading through flooded streets, while motorists were forced to navigate slowly through waterlogged roads. In some cases, vehicles broke down, worsening the already chaotic gridlock.
At Olatunji Street in Maryland, the overflow of a canal cut off access to the adjoining Mende community. A resident, Chinasa Nnadi, lamented that flooding in the area had persisted for years.

“This has been happening for as long as I can remember. Vehicles can’t move, and some residents even swim to their homes. Many families eventually relocate because of the constant floods,” she said.
