Floods halted commercial activities and vehicular movement in Lagos, while heavy gridlock stranded commuters and left many residents homeless.

AllAfrica reported that torrential rainfall lasted over 12 hours, and Premiumtimes noted that the rains began on Sunday, intensified on Tuesday, and continued on Wednesday. The floods submerged homes, property and roads, according to AllAfrica. Bluesky reported that some warehouses were destroyed and that many businessmen lost millions because of the floods.

Premiumtimes said Lagos warned of more heavy rains and demolished shanties. Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab told naturenews.africa that the city is vulnerable because it is coastal. He added that flooding in Lekki’s Kusenla axis was caused by a drainage system malfunction and that a new pumping station is being developed. Wahab also cited illegal constructions and reckless refuse disposal as major contributors to the flooding.
