Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, in his 2026 Democracy Day address, urged Nigerians to strengthen their support for democracy, national unity, and governance based on accountability. He said June 12 marked the restoration of democracy in Abia State, which restored its pride. Otti stated that democracy offers citizens the freedom to interrogate ideas, reflect on governance, and assess national progress. He called for continued civic engagement in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey. Otti said historical reflection on democracy should focus on improvement, not assigning fault, and that Nigeria should use the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists as a foundation for future progress. He paid tribute to late figures including Chief MKO Abiola, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, and Kudirat Abiola, as well as living figures such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Col. Dangiwa Umar (R).
