The Northern Territory Coroner Elisabeth Armitage handed down findings in the inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker in the remote community of Yuendumu, approximately 290 km northwest of Mparntwe (Alice Springs), on 7 July 2025. According to hrlc.org.au, Kumanjayi Walker was a proud Warlpiri and Luritja teenager who was much loved by his family and community. In evidence to the inquest, he was described as 'a quiet young man' who was 'nice to be around' and 'share a laugh' with. The coroner found that systemic racism existed within the NT Police. Kumanjayi Walker’s cousin, Samara Fernandez-Brown, said the family believes racism was a cause of his death and is disappointed that recommendations fall short on holding the NT Police to account for violence and deaths occurring while individuals are in police custody.

Separately, according to the Guardian, Kumanjayi White, a 24-year-old Warlpiri man who lived with cognitive disabilities, died on 27 May last year during a confrontation with police in a Coles supermarket in Alice Springs. The Guardian reported that Northern Territory police will not lay any charges against officers in relation to this incident. Accounts differ on whether Kumanjayi White and Kumanjayi Walker are the same individual, with differing names, locations, and contexts provided for each event.
