On 7 July 2025, Northern Territory Coroner Elisabeth Armitage handed down her findings in the inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker in the remote community of Yuendumu, approximately 290 km northwest of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). After the findings were handed down, Kumanjayi Walker’s cousin – Samara Fernandez-Brown – said:
To hear the Coroner identify structural and entrenched racism in the NT Police has made us feel validated. Our family and community have always felt that racism killed Kumanjayi. We are disappointed that recommendations fall short on holding the NT Police to account for racism, violence and deaths in custody.
Kumanjayi Walker was a proud Warlpiri and Luritja teenager who was much loved by his family and community. In evidence to the coronial inquest into his death, he was described as ‘a quiet young man’ who was ‘nice to be around’ and ‘share a laugh’ with.

Northern Territory police announced on May 26 that the two police officers who wrestled 24-year-old Warlpiri man Kumanjayi White to the floor of an Mparntwe/Alice Springs supermarket will not be charged.

Violent crowds clashed with police outside a hospital in a remote Australian outback town Thursday night as they demanded authorities hand over an accused child-killer.
Dramatic footage showed police officers dodging rocks and sticks while rioters smashed police cars and set a police van on fire. Officers can be seen shooting rounds of tear gas at the crowd, with some smoking canisters picked up and thrown back.
