The Kolkata Municipal Corporation renamed Suhrawardy Avenue to Gopal Mukherjee Road. The road was originally named in 1932-33 after Sir Hassan Suhrawardy, who was the uncle of Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the Prime Minister of undivided Bengal in 1947. Gopal Mukherjee, also referred to as Gopal Pantha, was a Bengali meat shop owner who protected Hindu families during the 1946 communal riots. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari praised the renaming as a correction of a historical wrong. Opposition figures and academicians call the renaming a mistake, arguing it distorts history. Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy is accused of leading the 1946 communal riot and of using state power to preside over violence during 1946. According to indian.community, BJP leader Keya Ghosh supported the renaming.
