Official results showed Fujimori won 50.135% of the vote in the June 7 runoff, defeating left-wing Congress member Roberto Sánchez, who received 49.865%, a margin of roughly 50,000 votes out of 18 million cast. Fujimori and Sánchez advanced to the runoff after a first-round vote in April that included a record 35 candidates.
