The presidential election in Peru to determine the 9th head of state in a decade is too close to call. Right-wing candidate, Keiko Fujimori ran on promises to be tough on crime and is the daughter of the late, former president and authoritarian figure Alberto Fujimori who was convicted of human rights abuses. Left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez, an ally of jailed former president Pedro Castillo, has vowed to address the socioeconomic divide between those living in cities and rural areas. The winner will likely be declared in some days after a full count is completed.

Seventeen days after the election
, with the slow count 99.8% complete, Fujimori (50.1%) holds a lead of around 43,386 votes that her rival, leftist Roberto Sánchez (49.8%), can no longer overturn, as only 40,213 ballots remain to be counted. Her victory has

The dictator's daughter or the farmer's son? – Democracy and society
Peru’s first round of elections on 11 April saw voters choosing between 18 presidential candidates with no one candidate leading by an impressive margin. Pedro Castillo, a rural teacher and union leader of the left-wing, socially conservative political partyPeru Libre(Free Peru), emerged with a surprise lead of 18,9 per cent. His opponent, Keiko Fujimori, daughter of the imprisoned dictator Alberto Fujimori and third time presidential candidate of the right-wingFuerza Popular(Popular Force) trailed with 13,4 per cent. Similarly, the 130 seats in the new congress will be shared amongst 10 political parties, with no one party holding a majority.
Some 30 per cent of the electorate did not vote at all – and this in a country where voting is mandatory. The low participation reflects the general aversion towards the rampant political corruption, scandal and instability of the past decades. The mood is of a people fed-up with a self-serving political class in which personal economic interests have scarcely become distinguishable from political goals. Add to this that many stayed away from the polling stations for fear …

In a major breakthrough for the Peruvian left and working class, socialist public school teacher and union leader Pedro Castillo has made history winning election as the country’s next president. Castillo is a member of the political party Peru Libre (Free Peru), which cites the ideas of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and José Carlos Mariátegui as the foundation for its program.
His opponent Keiko Fujimori, daughter of imprisoned former dictator Alberto Fujimori who herself is currently facing criminal charges for corruption, waged a vicious campaign relying on Peru’s corporate media. These powerful interests spread a message of fear by attempting to link Castillo to “terrorism”, a common trope levied against leftist politicians looking to challenge the political status quo. left Peruvians without a clear winner Monday, with conservative politician Keiko Fujimori and nationalist congressman Roberto Sánchez virtually tied.
With 94% of ballots tallied, the figures showed Sánchez earned 8.79 million votes, or 50.015%, while Fujimori received 8.78 million votes, or 49.985%.
The winner will be the South American country's ninth president in 10 years. Fujimori, daughter of a disgraced former president, and Sánchez, an ally of an imprisoned ex-president, were on the runoff's ballot after beating 33 other candidates in the vote in April, but neither earned even 20% of support.
