Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday claimed that the Congress is a "sinking ship" and that he doesn't think any Opposition party would want to board it.
Fadnavis was responding to questions on speculation aboutthe merger of Mamata Banerjee-led TMCand Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) with the Congress.
Opposition consolidation will mean the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will get more political space, he told reporters here. "Congress is a sinking ship, and no one ever sets foot on a sinking ship. But if anyone does, we have nothing to lose," the CM stated.
Fadnavis said the BJP has adopted a wait-and-watch approach.
"Even if Opposition parties step into the Congress, which is a sinking ship, we will get more political space," he added.
On Wednesday, Shiv Sena (UBT) MPSanjay Raut had suggested thatparties like the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Nationalist Congress Party (SP), formed after their leaders quit the Congress, should return to the fold of the Grand Old Party so as to create a strong alternative to the BJP.
Raut on Thursday said NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar should take a lead in merg…

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has a solution to strengthen unity among Opposition parties, even as a rebellionappears to be brewing within theTrinamool Congress (TMC), one of the key constituents of the INDIA alliance.
Speaking to India Today TV on Friday, the Rajya Sabha MP pitched for all breakaway factions of the Congress to merge back with the party, arguing that it is the need of the hour if the Opposition wants to resist the Bharatiya Janata Party's dominance.
"TMC, NCP and other breakaway factions of the Congress should merge into their parent party," he said.
Raut argued that a stronger Congress would be better placed to steer the Opposition, adding that the BJP wants to eliminate smaller regional parties from India's political landscape.
"There were regional outfits even during the Nehru and Indira eras. But the BJP believes in one nation, one party and one election," he claimed.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader also blamed the BJP for attempting to break the Trinamool Congress, claiming that the move reflects the saffron party's greed for power.

Sanjay Raut: 'Ex-Congress leader should unite to make party stronger'
A day after Congress leader Nana Patole claimed thatSharad Pawar had proposed the merger of his partywith his, and leaders from the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) denied the claim, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Friday said leaders who left Congress in the past should make efforts to “come together”.
Raut told reporters inMumbaithat Congress needs to become stronger and leaders who had formed separate parties after leaving it should rethink their position in the present political situation.
“The Congress has to become stronger. Leaders who came out of the Congress and built their own parties, whether Sharad Pawar, KCR, or Mamata Banerjee, should understand the situation in the country. If we want to fight those in power at the Centre, everyone will have to come together,” Raut said.
Raut urged Sharad Pawar to take the lead in making such an effort. “If Sharad Pawar takes the initiative and helps build a stronger Congress, parties like ours will also become stronger,” said the Sena (UBT) leader.
