Aavin denies discontinuing 'Green Magic' milk, says distribution normal
Chennai: State-owned Aavin on Saturday clarified that its green-packaged milk brand had not been discontinued and that distribution was continuing as usual.
There were reports that Aavin had reduced the supply of 'Green Magic' (with 4.5 per cent fat) milk due to low procurement, forcing consumers to buy milk from private companies, which is costlier.
However, a press release from Aavin said the recent media reports claiming that 'Green Magic' had been discontinued or significantly reduced in distribution were false.

In a startling revelation, Aavin’s iconic standardised milk variant,

, is set to be discontinued to cut costs, sending shockwaves through Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party chief, K Annamalai, took to social media platform X, exposing discrepancies in the Premium milk variant (Orange cover), which was purported to contain 6% fat but was found to have only 4.79% fat. Annamalai backed his claim with test results obtained and published for public scrutiny.
Aavin’s decision to halt the sale of the long-standing green packet milk, a household staple for four decades, has triggered widespread condemnation. The move to replace it with purple packet milk, boasting 3.5% fat content, has been labelled as an act of deceit against the public.
Annamalai’s revelation, based on a study conducted by a Food Safety and Standardization Authority (FSSAI) approved laboratory, alleges a significant shortfall in the fat content of the Orange packet milk. The reported 4.79% fat content falls consider…

During the DMK regime, a similar decision was made in 2023 to stop the sale of the green-packet milk and replace it with the 3.5% fat purple-packet milk. The DMK government dropped the plan back then following stiff opposition, recalled Annamalai.

CHENNAI: Aavin on Saturday denied discontinuing the ‘Green Magic’ milk variant and stated that the distribution was continuing as usual. A government release stated that all Aavin milk varieties, including Green Magic, were being distributed normally and that no variety had been discontinued or subjected to any substantial cut in supply. “Milk continues to be supplied to meet consumer demand, and members of the public are requested not to be misled by such incorrect reports,” it said. Aavin reiterated that Green Magic would continue to be available and distributed without interruption.
The statement attracted a sharp response from ‘We The Leaders’ founder K Annamalai, on social media, questioning who the government is trying to decieve “when the reality is otherwise?”
He recalled that the DMK government in 2023 had decided to stop Green Magic, but it was stopped due to strong resistance from opposition parties. On Aavin’s claim, he questioned the reason behind the drastic drop in availability of Green Magic milk at sales points.

In a strategic cost-cutting move, Tamil Nadu’s Aavin has said it will discontinue its widely popular “green packet” standardised milk that boasts of 4.5 percent fat content.
Effective 25 November, consumers will now receive the “Delite” variant in a purple pack, featuring a slightly lower fat content at 3.5 percent.
Aavin — a state government cooperative owned by the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited under the Tamil Nadu Ministry of Cooperation — charges ₹22 for both the green and purple packets.
According to reports, the green variant holds a significant 40 percent market share in Chennai.
Aavin has a total of four packets — the blue one with a very little fat percentage that costs ₹20, the green packet with 4.5 percent fat that costs ₹22, the purple pack with 3.5 percent fat that also costs ₹22, and the full-cream orange pack that costs ₹30.
The announcement came as a disappointment for the general public and hoteliers, who relied on the green packet for its taste and thickness.

Under the DMK government, the state-owned cooperative

has again been scrutinised after launching a new milk variant, “Green Magic Plus.” The product’s announcement lacked transparency regarding its quality and pricing, only mentioning the addition of Vitamins A and D, which has drawn widespread criticism.
Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss strongly criticized the DMK government, claiming that alarming details emerged when Aavin officials were questioned about the new product. According to Ramadoss, aside from a smaller pack size and a higher price, Green Magic Plus offers no significant difference from the existing Green Magic milk.
Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss pointed out that the original Green Magic milk priced at ₹22 for 500 ml, containing 4.5% fat and 9% non-fat solids. However, the newly introduced Green Magic Plus, priced at ₹50 for 900 ml, contains the same nutritional content but is sold at ₹55 per liter, which is ₹11 more than the original product.

CHENNAI:Aavin, the largest dairy co-operative of Tamil Nadu and a trusted brand among the households, is now facing a downfall in the market due to reduction in supply of its products, alleged sub-standard quality (with reduction in fat content) and lack of distribution.
It was May 7, 2021. Chief Minister MK Stalin signed an order reducing the price of milk supplied by Aavin by Rs 3 with effect from May 16. Insiders said that this was the first step of the dairy giant’s downfall.
“Due to reduction in price of milk by Rs 3 per litre, Aavin’s loss per year is Rs 280 crore. Aavin has been operating at a loss of Rs 700 crore since May 2021,” insiders noted.
Echoing this view was Natarajan Vaidyanathan, a major dealer of Aavin since 2005, who said, “To cope with the loss, the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited (TNCMPFL), which owns Aavin, hiked the price of orange colour milk sachets containing 6% fat content to Rs 12/litre. But with the sale of orange sachets faltering, Aavin management reduced the 4.5% content in its green sachets to 3.5%. This is one of the main reasons for the deterioration of green sachets that are pur…

Aavin cuts Green Magic supply due to low procurement & mounting losses
CHENNAI: The state-owned Aavin has reduced the supply of its popular standardised Green Magic milk by nearly 60%-70% in Chennai and several other parts of Tamil Nadu, triggering shortage and forcing consumers to switch to costlier private brands.
Industry sources attributed the decline to seasonal drop in milk procurement of around 3-4 lakh litres a day during summer, coupled with mounting losses incurred by Aavin due to the heavily subsidised pricing of the product.
According to sources, Green Magic milk, which contains 4.5% fat and 8.5% solids-not-fat (SNF), accounts for nearly 7.5 lakh litres of the 14 lakh litres of milk supplied daily in Chennai.
But over the past few days, its distribution has reportedly been reduced to around 2.5 lakh litres. Aavin officials, however, maintained that the reduction is only around
10%-15% and described it as a temporary measure necessitated by lower milk procurement during summer. They said there is no decision to permanently curtail the supply of the milk variant and assured that normal distribution would resume soon. Aavin Managing Director Ajay Yadav could not be r…
