Wayanad landslide: Vijayan slams govt, alleges distortion of facts
Wayanad landslide: Vijayan slams govt, alleges distortion of facts Keralam Leader of Opposition (LoP) Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday criticised the state government's response to the Wayanad landslide, alleging a lack of coordination among ministers and the 'distortion of facts' regarding environmental clearances for the tunnel road project. Speaking after visiting the disaster site, hospitals, and relief camps, Vijayan stated that while he supports the government in this hour of crisis, the information being shared by the administration is inconsistent. "I had visited the incident spot, hospital and camp. I have already said that our support is there to the government in this situation. It is a good thing that the Chief Minister has announced an investigation," Vijayan said. However, he raised strong objections to the Chief Minister's statements regarding the environmental sensitivity of the region and the proposed tunnel road. "Facts should not be distorted regarding the issue of environmental clearance being obtained for the tunnel road. What the Chief Minister said in the press conference is incorrect regarding environmental issues in the area," he added. Vijayan further alleg…

Giving details of the rescue efforts, he said that cadaver dogs, fire force personnel and NDRF teams have been deployed and the area has been divided into four zones to carry out the search. He said that areas downstream of the river are also being searched and the road towards Chooralmala has been cleared. But, there is a lot more mud to be cleared from the incident site, and it can be done only after the search operations are completed, the officer said. The state government, a day ago, had contended that it was a "man-made disaster" as the mud accumulated at the construction site had not been removed despite directions from the district administration and Public Works Department Minister PK Basheer. Warnings ignored: How a man-made debris pile turned deadly at Wayanad ... When a mountain of excavated soil came crashing down onto the Meenakshi bridge near Kalladi near Meppadi in Wayanad on July 7, sweeping away a tanker lorry and claiming at least three lives, it also exposed the callousness towards disaster preparedness despite clear warnings and official alerts. Unlike the two earlier landslides that have struck Wayanad's natural Western Ghats slopes in recent years, this one happened at a site entirely shaped by human activity — a mound of tunnel-excavated soil stored beside a live construction project in an ecologically sensitive region prone to landslides. Less than two weeks before the collapse, on June 25, a high-level PWD delegation inspected the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi tunnel project site along with officials from the District Disaster Management Authority, the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), and the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), the executing agency. The findings were stark enough. The huge pile of excavated soil posed a risk of soil piping and soil instability, according to minutes of the meeting released by the PWD. The …

Mudslide on Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway: Experts point fingers ... KOCHI: Following the mudslide on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi National Highway that claimed a life and destroyed eight homes near Adimali, experts are pointing a critical finger at National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) contractors. They cite unscientific construction practices, particularly aggressive slope-cutting during the volatile rainy season, that are heightening the risk of landslips. The government has ordered a temporary halt to all work on the crucial NH 85, till further notice. ‘Error in excavation’ Geologists contend that the fundamental error lies in the method of excavation. Instead of adhering to established safety protocols, contractors are widely engaging in sheer vertical cutting, sometimes up to 20 metres, without providing essential stability features. The standard practice requires creating steps, known as benches, to manage the slope. “They should have ideally indulged in slope cutting with benches, rather than vertical cutting,” says Dr Sajin Kumar K S, assistant professor, geology department, Kerala University. Benching is vital for adding stability to the hillside, as it reduces…

Kalladi Landslide in Wayanad: Experts Blame Fragile Terrain, Climate ... The July 7, 2026, landslide at Kalladi near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district was a disaster waiting to happen, according to experts. Their remarks came even as rescue operations are on at the site of the disaster which claimed three lives, with five people being reported missing. Geo-scientist C P Rajendran, adjunct professor at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bengaluru, observed after the disaster that the project had received clearance without detailed geological and hydrological investigations appropriate for such fragile terrain. Tunnelling, he noted, alters stress distribution within hill slopes, creates fractures and can trigger slope failures during episodes of extreme rainfall. He argued that changing rainfall patterns demanded far stricter ecological safeguards for infrastructure in the Western Ghats. C K Vishnudas, director of the Hume Centre for Ecology and Wildlife Biology in Wayanad, described the Kalladi disaster as an engineering failure imposed upon an inherently fragile mountain. According to him, nearly 200 mm of rainfall in a day was enough to trigger collapse because the…
