New Delhi:
Lok Sabha Speaker
Om Birla is reviewing the status of the 20 rebel
Trinamool Congress
(TMC) MPs and will make a decision after hearing both factions sources said on Tuesday.
According to sources, the Speaker's office has sent an email to the group of TMC MPs led by
Mamata Banerjee
, inviting them for a formal meeting. The Speaker is expected to take any decision regarding the rebel faction's request for a merger only after discussing the matter with the party's official leadership.
This follows a formal split in the party's Lok Sabha contingent, where 20 dissident MPs met the Speaker and submitted a letter requesting the merger of their group with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
Reacting sharply to the development, TMC MP Kirti Azad dismissed the move as "misleading" and "undemocratic," asserting that the party remains firmly under Mamata Banerjee's leadership.
"Our letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker clearly states that the real TMC is that of Mamata Banerjee, because the political party is hers. The letter given (by 20 rebel TMC MPs) to the Speaker is misleading," Azad tol…

Therebellion within the Trinamool Congress(TMC) escalated on Friday as the faction of dissident MPs -- claiming the support of 19 Lok Sabha members -- said it would approach Speaker Om Birla next week to seek recognition as the "real TMC" parliamentary group.
The move has been rejected by the Mamata Banerjee-led party, which argues that such a claim has no basis under India's anti-defection law.
Rebel MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia said the dissident faction had already submitted a representation to the Speaker and would formally press its case on Monday.
"We have submitted the letter... On Monday, we will go to the Speaker and stake our claim to form the real TMC parliamentary group. We will ask the Speaker to give recognition to our claim," Basunia told PTI.
He said the process of collecting signatures began on June 8 and that 19 MPs had backed the representation so far. Sources said the timing of the meeting with the Speaker had not yet been finalised.
The announcement prompted a strong response from the TMC, which said the dissidents' position was legally unsustainable.

All rebel MPs from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are likely to merge with another political outfit, the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), and extend its support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre, said rebel TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar on Sunday (June 14).
With this development, the Nationalist Citizen Party has become the second-largest constituent of the NDA after the BJP in terms of Lok Sabha strength, overtaking the TDP, which has 16 MPs.
After meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Dastidar said, "We, the 20 MPs elected from the AITC, met the Speaker and submitted a letter requesting to sit separately; these twenty MPs constitute more than two-thirds of our total strength. We are merging with the Nationalist Citizens Party. Moving forward, we will work for the nation and collaborate with the NDA under the leadership of the Prime Minister."
Meanwhile, Sudip Banerjee said, "We have decided to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party. However, we will also stake a claim that we are the real TMC, and we will take the matter to court."

A first information report (FIR) has been lodged against former Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for an alleged communal remark during the election campaign. The FIR has been lodged at North Kolkata's Hare Street Police Station.
Amid mounting trouble caused by the rebels, Trinamool Congress MP Shatrughan Sinha said that he would stand by Mamata Banerjee and would not leave her.
"I will always be with Mamata Banerjee. Even if I am alone, I will just say "Ekla Chalo" and stay with her... I have no plans to go anywhere as of now," he told ANI.
The statement came amid controversies over his stance. Rumours spread earlier that he had signed the rebels list. However, later he said that he has not signed any such lis.

As a group of rebel Trinamool Congress leaders met at a Union minister’s Delhi home on Sunday, two TMC MPs still in Mamata Banerjee’s camp reached Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s residence and submitted a letter from party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, requesting him to treat the TMC as a single party represented only by its authorised leader and whip and to refuse recognition to any purported breakaway faction of the party.
Abhishek, who is also a Lok Sabha member, wrote in the letter that he had learnt that “certain members of the Lok Sabha belonging to the AITC have submitted, or propose to submit, a communication to your good office seeking to be recognised as a separate group or faction of the AITC, independent of the legislative party”.
“The AITC is a single, indivisible political party. The legislative party in the Lok Sabha derives its very existence from, and remains an emanation of, the political party. There is in law only one AITC, one Leader of the Party in the House, and one Whip, all of whom hold office by authority of the political party and its competent organisational authority,” read th…

The reported outreach has triggered speculation that a section of parliamentarians may be considering a separate political course if internal tensions continue to escalate.

POLITICS: Speaker Om Birla to Hear Both TMC Factions Before Verdict
The political battle over the rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs has intensified, with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla deciding to hear both factions before taking a final call on the proposed merger issue. TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee was initially invited to meet the Speaker, but the meeting was postponed as he was appearing before investigative agencies in Kolkata. According to reports, communication between the Speaker’s Office and the Mamata Banerjee-led faction remains ongoing, and a new meeting date will be scheduled once Banerjee is available. The Mamata camp plans to argue that, despite the rebels claiming the required two-thirds strength for a merger, provisions under the Tenth Schedule (anti-defection law) could still justify disqualification. They intend to present their legal objections before the Speaker. Meanwhile, political discussions have intensified over a series of opposition splits, with references being made to earlier realignments involving Shiv Sena, NCP, and other parties. The Speaker is expected to make a decision only after hearing all sides.

The Ritabrata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress is scheduled to meet the full bench of the Election Commission in New Delhi on Thursday, amid an intensifying battle over the ownership of the party, funds and its twin-flower symbol
A 10-member delegation of the faction will meet Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the other election commissioners at noon, leaders of the camp said on Wednesday.
"We have got an appointment tomorrow with the EC. A delegation of 10 members of the TMC would meet the EC bench on Thursday," Banerjee told PTI.
However, Banerjee declined to disclose the meeting's agenda.
Sources in the faction said the delegation is expected to press its claim before the poll panel that it represents the "real" Trinamool Congress and should be recognised as the legitimate organisational and legislative wing of the party.
A leader of the camp said the faction would argue that it enjoys the support of a majority of the party's organisational functionaries and elected representatives, and therefore has a rightful claim over the party's name and symbol.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has strongly criticised the dissident MPs who recently approached Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking separate recognition in Parliament, with senior party leader Madan Mitra describing the move as an act of "treachery". The remarks come amid an escalating rebellion led by MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, whose camp has claimed the support of a significant section of TMC's Lok Sabha MPs and announced plans to align with another political formation. The party leadership has maintained that the TMC remains united and has rejected attempts to create a separate faction within Parliament.
Reacting to the rebel MPs' meeting with the Speaker, TMC MLA Madan Mitra accused the dissidents of betraying the party under whose banner they were elected.
He argued that the MPs had won their elections using the TMC symbol and the image of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, making their attempt to seek a separate identity in Parliament unacceptable.
Mitra said the rebels had initially claimed they would form a separate faction under their own leadership, but were now looking to function under another pol…

The split in the Trinamool Congress became formal on Sunday as the party's rebel MPs joined the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), a little-known political outfit from Tripura, instead of merging directly with the BJP.
The move gives the obscure party, which was founded only in 2023 and has so far had a limited presence in Tripura and Assam, an unexpected foothold in West Bengal and a sizeable presence in Parliament overnight.
The decision follows days of speculation over the future of the dissident MPs. While many expected them to join the BJP or seek recognition as a separate Trinamool faction, the rebels instead chose the NCPI route, a move widely seen as a way of avoiding legal complications under the anti-defection law while maintaining political proximity to the BJP-led NDA.
The rebel MPs met Union minister Bhupender Yadav in Delhi before approaching Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with a letter seeking recognition under the NCPI banner.
The development marks a complete political break from Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. Leaders including Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Saayoni Ghosh, Mala Roy, Rachna Ban…

Rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders flew out to Delhi and huddled together at the residence of a Union Minister, with one dissident MP claiming that more parliamentarians had switched over to their side, further weakening party chief Mamata Banerjee. The rebel faction of leaders have claimed support of 22 parliamentarians ahead of theirMonday meeting with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. This is especially worrisome for Banerjee who effectively lost control of her Legislature Party after losing power to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the recently held Assembly elections.
Thedissident factionis set to to urge Speaker Birla to recognise them as a separate bloc and allow them to sit alongside the MPs of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the House.

MPs Saayoni Ghosh and Mala Roy arrived in Delhi on Sunday ahead of the rebel TMC parliamentarians’ meeting with the Lok Sabha speaker to stake claim for “real Trinamool” even as TMC leadership asserted there’s no law allowing a separate parliamentary group.
The rebel MPs are also likely to hold a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday, sources said.
At Delhi airport, both Roy and Ghosh refused to talk to the media. Ghosh said, “I would answer the people of my constituency, not to you”.
The developments came a day after senior TMC leader and veteran parliamentarian Sudip Bandyopadhyay, regarded as one of Mamata Banerjee’s closest aides, joined the rebel camp after meeting Union Ministers Amit Shah and Bhupender Yadav in Delhi.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will hear the defected TMC MPs as well as the faction led by Mamata Banerjee before deciding on giving recognition to the breakaway faction, sources have said.
The speaker's office has also sent an email to the Banerjee-led faction — which is now reduced to a rump — seeking its view, they said.
Earlier, sources from Parliament said Birla is likely to seek legal opinion on the defected leaders' demand to be recognised as a separate group after a proposed merger with the little-known Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
Any decision on the group's demand will be taken before the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which usually commences in the third week of July, they said.
The legal opinion will be sought so that the speaker's decision, if challenged in court, can withstand judicial scrutiny, sources said.

Rebel TMC MPs to join Tripura-based Nationalist Citizen Party of India
Rebel lawmakers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are set to join Tripura-based Nationalist Citizen Party of India (NCPI) after days of unrest within the Mamata-led party.
TMC MPs, including Yusuf Pathan, Kakoli Ghosh, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, met Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla in Delhi on Sunday, amid reports of the rebelling MPs seeking recognition as ‘real TMC’ and staking claim on TMC symbol.
However, the speculations have now been put to rest as the rebelling MPs will be joining the NCPI.
The TMC has been embroiled in crisis following the poll debacle after the BJP made landslide victory in West Bengal Assembly elections held in April, ending TMC's 15 years of rule. An internal rift soon jolted the party as several MPs and MLAs started showing signs of disgruntlement over party's national secretary and Mamata's nephew Abhijeet Banerjee's control over the party.

TMC infighting escalates as rebel camp presses claim over party before ECI
KOLKATA: The battle for control of the TMC intensified on Thursday after the Ritabrata Banerjee-led rebel faction met the full bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The faction staked its claim to the party’s official name and twin-flower election symbol, asserting that it represents the “real” party with the backing of a majority of the elected representatives.
Following the meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the two Election Commissioners, the rebel camp said the poll panel had given them a “patient hearing”.
As per the latest development, the poll panel has asked both factions, each led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Ritabrata Banerjee, to submit details regarding organisational elections and authorised signatories by 5:30 PM on Monday, July 06, 2026.
Addressing reporters after the meeting earlier, Ritabrata Banerjee said the delegation had formally presented its case before the Commission, citing the faction's special organisational session held in Kolkata on June 22 as the basis of its claim.
