With Trinamool Congress MPs on Sunday conveying to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla that they hadmerged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), and that they want to sit in the House as a separate bloc, the spotlight moved to a lesser-known party that made its electoral debut in the 2023 Assembly polls in Tripura, losing deposits in both the seats it contested.
Led by founder Shiuli Kundu, the NCPI has been active in Assam and Tripura in recent years. According to the Election Commission of India website, the NCPI is among “registered (unrecognised)” parties, with a symbol of “pen nib with seven rays”.
Although it was not immediately clear if the NCPI contested in the recent elections in Assam, a party leader, who did not wish to be named, said it “fielded” four candidates in the 2023 Tripura elections, including two who fought the election on party tickets.
While Jahangir Ali (54) and Barjeda Tripura (65) fought on NCPI tickets from Kailashahar constituency in Unakoti district and Chawmanu constituency in Dhalai district, respectively, identities of the other two candidates are yet to be confirmed. It is l…

20 rebel TMC MPs merge with NCPI, a little-known Tripura party
At least 20 rebel lawmakers of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday told speaker Om Birla that they have merged with a little-known Tripura-based party, strengthening the National Democratic Alliance and setting the stage for one of the biggest defections in India’s parliamentary history.
At least 20 lawmakers of the TMC met Birla on Sunday and submitted a letter that said the rebel group had merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India or NCPI, which was formed in 2022 and fought its last election in 2023.
The party currently doesn’t have a lawmaker anywhere in the country. According to a Lok Sabha functionary, Birla will now verify the signatures of 20 MPs before approving the merger.

Following the announcement that 20 Members of Parliament (MPs) elected from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) intend to merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), NCPI founder and national organising secretary Shantanu Dey expressed support for the move and openness to further discussions.
Speaking to ANI, Dey said he was previously unaware of the developments but welcomed the merger, which he learned about through social media and news reports. He noted that the party president made the decision and stated, "Why won't I be happy if my party grows?" He added that he was committed to the party's growth and willing to collaborate with the new members to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and work alongside the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). "If Kakoli Di speaks to us, then we will certainly go (to Delhi). I am hopeful that we will talk (NCPI & 20 TMC MPs). We will hold a press meet soon," he said.

The Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), a relatively obscure political outfit with limited electoral presence, has suddenly emerged as a major talking point in national politics after 20 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs announced their merger with the party.
The development has intensified the political crisis within the TMC and transformed NCPI from a fringe regional organisation into a parliamentary player with significant influence.
According to reports, the merger has also provided the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) with an unexpected ally while raising questions about the future political trajectory of NCPI.
NCPI emerges as surprise player in TMC political crisis
Registered with the Election Commission of India as a Registered Unrecognised Political Party (RUPP) on January 20, 2023, NCPI was formed with a focus on regional issues, particularly tribal representation and welfare.
Although headquartered in Howrah, West Bengal, the party’s early political activities were concentrated in Tripura, where it attempted to establish itself as an alternative political force.

The Congress on Monday accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of masterminding what it called an "illegal breakaway" of 20 rebel Trinamool Congress MPs after they announced their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). The party said the move was part of Shah's strategy to engineer a two-thirds majority for the NDA in the Lok Sabha.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the development had taken Indian democracy to "new lows" and alleged that "decency, decorum and devotion to constitutional values and principles remain vulnerable and threatened every day he continues in office". He said the NCPI, a registered but unrecognised party formed three years ago, could become the second-largest constituent in the NDA through the merger.
In a post on X, Ramesh said, "A desperate Union home minister – who is an absolute disgrace to the position once held by Sardar Patel – has taken Indian democracy to new lows in a shameless manner." He also said Shah had "masterminded the illegal breakaway of 20 TMC MPs and their wholly questionable fusion with an unheard of and reportedly registered but unrecognis…

New Delhi/IBNS: Fresh political drama erupted over the reported merger of 20 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) after senior office bearers of the little-known party claimed they had no knowledge of such an induction.
Speaking to NDTV, the NCPI's general secretary said the party leadership was unaware of any merger involving the rebel TMC parliamentarians.
"We have no information about the merger. We watched it on the news and Facebook," he said.
The leader added that party president Uttiyo Kundu and other office bearers had traditionally taken decisions collectively, making the reported development all the more puzzling.
"Uttiyo Kundu, a social worker, is our party president. We have conducted all procedures collectively, but what's happening now is beyond our understanding," he said.
According to reports, several NCPI office bearers are opposed to the merger and have questioned the manner in which the decision was allegedly taken.
The controversy comes a day after 20 rebel TMC MPs, including several leaders once considered close to party chief Mam…

Amid the ongoing tussle within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), 20 rebel MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on June 14, claiming they had merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
Joining the Tripura-based outfit, which polled just 822 votes across two seats in the 2023 Legislative Assembly election, the MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and Sudip Bandhopadhyay asked to be seated separately from the other TMC benches.
The group says it represents more than two-thirds of the TMC’s Lok Sabha strength. This is the threshold required for political representatives to be exempt from the law meant to penalise defections, and to retain membership of the House.
Birla will hear both factionsbefore taking a call on the merger. TMC’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee previously wrote to him, insisting the party is “a single, indivisible political party” and that no organisational merger has taken place.
The dispute turns on a question the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution has never fully settled — does a two-thirds split within Parliament amount to a merger, or must the larger political par…

New Delhi:A political party that struggled to cross four digits in votes during its only electoral outing has suddenly become the new political home of 20 rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs. It has turned the little-known outfit into one of the most talked-about names in Indian politics.
The Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), a Bengal-registered party that made little impact after its formation in 2023, has moved from political obscurity to the centre of a major parliamentary development after a group of TMC MPs announced their merger with it.
The sudden rise of the NCPI has put its origins, leadership, finances and electoral record under public examination.Out of obscurity, into headlines
The NCPI was registered with the Election Commission (EC) on January 20, 2023, as a Registered Unrecognised Political Party (RUPP). Although it was registered in West Bengal, it chose neighbouring Tripura for its first electoral debut only weeks later.
