Rahul Gandhi, Congress, and the challenge of rebuilding democratic opposition
By Vidya Bhushan Rawat
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi remains in the news almost constantly. Commentators appear sharply divided between his detractors and supporters, leaving little room for those who disagree with both camps. For years, the Congress was accused of creating a political environment in which all non-BJP forces were eventually expected to rally behind it in the name of resisting Hindutva politics. Over time, many regional leaders chose to chart their own course, and for some, the BJP even appeared to be a more convenient political option. In a society where power often determines political relevance, such shifts are hardly surprising.
A recent controversy emerged following remarks by historian Ramachandra Guha, who has often been critical of the Gandhi family. Guha argued that Rahul Gandhi is not "qualified" to become India's Prime Minister. Such assertions raise an important question: what exactly constitutes qualification in a democracy? There is no formal qualification for political leadership beyond the confidence of …

New Delhi, Sep 19: Top NDA leaders on Friday lashed out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his recent remarks portraying Gen Z as defenders of democracy and accusers of electoral malpractice, accusing him of trying to incite unrest among India’s youth.
BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain strongly criticised Gandhi for allegedly provoking young citizens: “Rahul Gandhi is inciting the youth, students, and Gen Zs of the country. He is provoking them against the nation. This is completely unacceptable. The youth of this country admire PM Modi. They know that this government works for them and for the poor.”

In a scathing critique, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-led Centre of lacking vision to revive the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) sector despite the reduction of GST rates, suggesting that 'PR and headline management' are ineffective strategies.
Gandhi emphasized the need for policies that create jobs for the youth, ensure equal opportunities, and respect citizens' skills, stating that India's current manufacturing landscape has declined, now assembling rather than producing world-class goods.
Pointing a finger at wrong policies like demonetization and GST, he alleged these have dismantled MSMEs and …

NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he was stopped from speaking in the Lok Sabha on multiple occasions and asserted that the House does not represent one party but the whole country.
Interjecting in a debate in Lok Sabha on the resolution to remove Om Birla as speaker, Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "has been compromised" and everybody knows the result of that.
Responding to BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad, who cited parliamentary procedures to say that the leader of opposition should measure his words carefully, especially on issues of national security, Gandhi said that his name was being raised during the debate multiple times and "vile things" were being said about him.
"The discussion here is about the democratic process and the role of the speaker. But multiple times, my name is being raised, vile things are being said about me. This House is the expression of people's will. This House does not represent one party; it represents the whole country," the former Congress president said.

Jaipur, June 17 A day before Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's high-stakes 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' rally in Kota, a fresh political battle has erupted in Rajasthan, with the Congress accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of removing posters, intimidating stakeholders, and attempting to undermine the Opposition leader's outreach to students.
The Congress claims the state administration has begun taking down banners and hoardings promoting Rahul Gandhi's Wednesday event and is exerting pressure on coaching institutes, PG operators and guest-house owners to discourage student participation.
The BJP has however denied the charges, calling them "baseless" and "politically motivated".

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Udayanraje Bhosale, who is also a descendant of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji, Tuesday sought disciplinary action against Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and other BJP leaders for making controversial statements against Shivaji.
Last month, Koshyari had raked up a controversy by labelling Shivaji as an icon of the “olden days” and had called Dr B R Ambedkar and Union MinisterNitin Gadkari“icons of modern times”. The Governor had made the remark while addressing a gathering after conferring D Litt degrees on senior BJP leader and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and president of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Sharad Pawar at the Dr B R Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad.
On Tuesday, Bhosale was speaking after participating in a silent march organised by various outfits as a part of thePunebandh against Koshyari’s remarks on Shivaji. The protesters sought Koshyari’s removal from the post and an apology from him as well as the BJP.
Bhosale said that the silent protest shows that the love towards Shivaji has not reduced in the last 350 years. “The respect for the Maratha king cont…

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday slammed senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot's remarks about banning the saffron party, alleging that the opposition party still suffers from an "Emergency mindset" and poses a threat to democracy.
At a programme in Jaipur on Sunday, Gehlot, the former Rajasthan chief minister, accused the BJP of practising politics in the name of religion and claimed that if former prime minister Indira Gandhi were in power today, she would have banned such a party.
Reacting sharply, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said Gehlot's remarks show that the Congress has not learnt any lessons from the Emergency under Indira Gandhi.
"Ashok Gehlot's statement makes it clear that the Congress is anti-democracy. The Gandhi-Vadra family is the biggest threat to Indian democracy... If Congress comes to power, it will impose an Emergency and destroy democracy," Bhandari said in a video post on X.
He alleged that the Congress continues to justify the Emergency instead of apologising for it.

U'khand min sacked over 'Paharis' remarks not new to controversies
Four-time BJP MLA Premchand Agarwal, who resigned as the Uttarakhand finance minister recently over his alleged anti-Pahari comments, has had a chequered past with many controversies surrounding him.
The former minister was in the dock after he became speaker of the state assembly in 2017 and then a cabinet minister in 2022 in the Pushkar Singh Dhami government.

After taking over as the state finance minister, Agarwal made in-camera admission to allegations of illegal appointments in the state assembly secretariat when he was speaker from 2017 to 2022. In 2022, his video claiming that no one can harm him went viral in social media without any action from party bosses.

Later, his successor and present assembly speaker Ritu Khanduri ordered a probe and constituted a committee headed by retired IAS officer D K Kotia to investigate the allegations.
Khanduri had to cancel 228 appointments made in the Uttarakhand assembly secretariat between 2016 and 2021 owing to the probe report submitted by the Kotia-led Committee. Khanduri brought this matter to the knowledge of the Centre but in vain.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday said the government will move a privilege notice against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi for allegedly misleading the House and making “baseless statements.” Addressing a press conference, Rijiju said there are clear rules governing procedure and conduct of business in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. He noted that when a member intends to level serious charges or allegations against another member, prior notice must be given and a substantive motion moved in accordance with established norms.
“On the floor of the House, I requested Rahul Gandhi to provide the necessary authentication of the points he has made,” Rijiju said, adding that the government expects members to adhere strictly to parliamentary rules.
On Tuesday, Kiren Rijiju had said that “very ugly scenes” could have taken place in the Lok Sabha if Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmakers had confronted opposition members during protests earlier this month.

BJD leader Naveen Patnaik (File Photo)
‘When bad times come then, even if you are on a camel’s back, a dog can still bite your legs’ goes a saying in Hindi. So, even after its presence in 21 states, there is an air of rebellion building up against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in many states, including Odisha.
Since the 2024 elections, Biju Janata Dal leader Naveen Patnaik’s angst of defeat after 24 years in power, has slowly raised its head on several occasions when he took jibes at the BJP in the state and, by implication, at the Narendra Modi dispensation at the Centre.
For Prime Minister Modi, say experts, the bid to escape the discomfort of criticism does not pay any dividends. In a way, difficulties have been chasing him like a shadow.
Patnaik, who has stood by Modi on several occasions, supporting the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha whenever needed, perhaps, seems to have realised that now is the time to side-step on certain issues to send a message among the BJD cadre that he can walk without crutches and dispel the notion about his subservience to Modi.

Amid the ongoing controversy surroundingRahul Gandhi's comments about late Hindutva ideologueVeer Savarkar, Maharashtra deputy chief ministerDevendra Fadnavishas mounted an uncharacteristically harsh attack on the disqualified Lok Sabha MP, stating that those born with a silver spoon are the ones questioning Savarkar.
Addressing the ‘Veer Savarkar Gaurav Yatra’ in Mumbai on Sunday, Fadnavis questioned Rahul Gandhi's understanding of Savarkar and stated that his party leaders, including Indira Gandhi and Yashwantrao Chavan, had respected him.
Fadnavis also criticised formerMaharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackerayfor his stance on the issue and challenged him to take action instead of just making statements. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader also questioned why Rahul Gandhi has not deleted his tweet about Savarkar and urged him to do so.
Rahul Gandhi has often accused Savarkar of “apologising” to the British to get out of jail, and has routinely shot back at the BJP's demands for an apology by claiming he was the Congress leader and not Savarkar to seek mercy.

A political storm erupted on Sunday after former Rajasthan chief minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot claimed that if former prime minister Indira Gandhi were alive today, she would have banned a party like the BJP. The BJP hit back sharply, accusing the Congress of being anti-Hindu and alleging that Gehlot's remarks reflected the party's "Emergency-era" and "dictatorial" mindset.

A political storm has erupted in Rajasthan ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's much-anticipated interaction with students in Kota, with former chief minister Ashok Gehlot accusing the BJP government of attempting to stifle publicity for the programme by removing hoardings across the city.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Gehlot alleged that local authorities were systematically taking down banners and publicity material related to Gandhi's event, which is scheduled to focus on issues confronting students, including examination irregularities and the alleged NEET paper leak.
Drawing a contrast with the previous Congress government in Rajasthan, Gehlot said BJP programmes had received full administrative cooperation when publicity material was installed during the Congress regime.

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the criminal defamation proceedings against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The case pertains to Gandhi's controversial remarks on the Indian Army following the 2020 Galwan Valley clash with China. The interim relief came in response to Gandhi’s Special Leave Petition challenging the Allahabad High Court’s refusal to quash the case.
Although the bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and A.G. Masih granted temporary relief for three weeks, it sharply criticised Gandhi’s comments. “If you were a true Indian, you would not say all this,” Justice Datta remarked, questioning how Gandhi claimed Chinese forces had occupied 2,000 sq km of Indian territory without offering credible evidence. “Were you there?” he asked pointedly.
Justice Datta further asked why Gandhi did not raise such matters in Parliament instead of on social media.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Gandhi, argued that opposition leaders must be allowed to raise concerns and that Gandhi was questioning the lack of disclosure about the Galwan incident. He conceded the remarks …

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday accused the BJP of pursuing politics based on religion, weakening democratic institutions, and misusing central investigative agencies against its political opponents, a report said.
Addressing an award ceremony in Jaipur, Gehlot said that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi would have banned the BJP if she were in power today, alleging that the party engages in religion-based politics, which he claimed runs contrary to the spirit of the Constitution.
"What is their (BJP) mindset? They are weakening the country by deliberately pushing a religious agenda--targeting Muslims... They do this to show the citizens that they are a 'Hindutva' party...," he alleged.
"The Constitution guarantees equal rights to people of all faiths. Religion should not be used as a political instrument," Gehlot said.
The Congress veteran described the ideological positions of the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as "dangerous" and accused the ruling party of selectively invoking national leaders such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for political gain while disregarding…

Gandhi Ji, Sardar Patel Ji, these are the foundation of the Congress Party. I had a plan for the speech, but Ajay Lallu ji said something, so now my plan got diverted. Just now he said that I am working for the backward, for the Dalits, for the tribals, for the poor people, that is true, but he added that in the coming times people will remember my name. Days after his controversial statement that Union Minister Pralhad Joshi belonged to a sect of Brahmins which desecrated the Sringeri Shankaracharya Peeth and assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said his statement was misconstrued as he had not blamed all Brahmins.
The second-in-command of Janata Dal (Secular) also said he always had the portraits of some iconic religious leaders who belonged to the Brahmin community. "I never did caste-based politics. I never asked people their caste whenever they approached me for help. I am not the one who insults people for their caste. The Brahmin community is leading life in a cultured manner," Kumaraswamy clarified days after the statement sparked a controversy drawing criticism. Explaining further, the JD(S) leader said he had only referred to those who had attacked the Chandramauleshwara temple in Sringeri, a section which assassinated Mahatma Gandhi and Maratha ruler Shivaji. He said those who were behind these incidents were not from Karnataka but neighbouring state of Maharashtra. Kumaraswamy also said his out…

THE SUPREME Court on Monday censured Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks against the Army in the wake of the 2020 Galwan clash with the Chinese, saying, “If you are a true Indian, you would not say all these things.” The court, however, granted a three-week stay on proceedings in a criminal defamation case against Gandhi over the alleged remarks made during his Bharat Jodo Yatra.
The apex court was hearing Gandhi’s appeal challenging the Allahabad High Court judgment refusing to stay the proceedings initiated in aLucknowtrial court against him over his alleged remarks on the Indian Army. According to the complainant, Uday Shankar Srivastava, former director of the Border Roads Organisation, the remarks made on December 16, 2022 during Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra defamed the Army.
Presiding over a two-judge bench, Justice Dipankar Datta told Senior Advocate A M Singhvi, who appeared for the Congress leader, “We have read the comments… Tell us… How do you get to know that 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory have been occupied by the Chinese? Lok Sabha: The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Shri Rahul Gandhi spoke during the debate on the Budget in the Lok Sabha on February 11, 2026, and noted that the Government of India had surrendered energy sovereignty as now the United States will decide from where we should purchase our oil and from where we should not. He said that the US has threatened to impose punitive tariffs if India purchases oil from countries disapproved by Washington. He argued that such conditions amount to ‘weaponisation’ of finance and energy and undermine India’s sovereign decision-making. He alleged that the Centre has compromised India’s data sovereignty, energy security and agricultural interests in its recent engagement with the United States, at a time of intensifying global instability.
Commenting on the Prime Minister’s position and his role in the trade deal that compromised the country’s interests, he said, “No Prime Minister before Modi has done like that, nor will anyone after him do that.” No Prime Minister would sign such a deal unless there was a hold on him as he was under a ‘chokehold’ or had a ‘grip on his neck’ by the…

“I would like to say one last thing. Do not think that we’re fighting a fair fight. There is not fairness in this. If you believe, that we’re fighting a political organization called the BJP, that we’re fighting a political organization called the RSS, you’ve not understood what is going on. 50 years of Emergency: Student rant by Rahul Gandhi under fire
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with young Rahul Gandhi
As India marks 50 years since the imposition of the infamous Emergency of 1975, a time when democracy was throttled under Indira Gandhi’s authoritarian regime, her grandson Rahul Gandhi now postures as a champion of student rights. In doing so, he conveniently sidesteps his family’s bloody legacy, choosing selective outrage over honest reflection.
As Rahul rails against the BJP for supposedly silencing student voices and communalising education, he is mum about the atrocities young dissenters suffered during the Emergency, when his grandmother’s government imprisoned, tortured and allegedly murdered students for having the temerity to speak up. From the chilling “aeroplane” torture technique to the tragic murder of Kerala student P. Rajan, the Congress’s war on student activism remains one of the darkest and least acknowledged chapters of Indian history.
Rahul Gandhi’s performative campus visits and empty slogans do little to erase this history. Rather, they expose a troubling hypocrisy: the heir of the very regime that crushed student dissent now seeks to …

BJP Calls Priyank Kharge's Move On RSS Immature And Political
MANGALURU:The BJP on Sunday came down heavily on IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge for his letter to the Chief Minister seeking restrictions on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activities in public places and government premises, calling it an “immature and politically motivated move.”
Leading the charge, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya took to X (formerly Twitter) to remind Priyank Kharge of a moment from 2002 when his father, then Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, had attended an RSS event in Bengaluru.
“Little knowledge is dangerous. During the preparations for the RSS Samarasata Sangama held at Nagawara, Bengaluru, on January 25, 26, and 27, 2002 — the then Karnataka Home Minister, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge (father of Priyank Kharge, who now wants to ban RSS activities in the state) — along with other Congress ministers, visited the RSS campsite and appreciated the organisation’s social service activities,” he posted.
“Present on the occasion were the recently deceased RSS veteran Shri K. R. Narahari and other prominent functionaries. Congress leader Roshan Baig and Police Commissioner T. Sangliana were al…

By Ranjan Solomon
For more than a decade, Rahul Gandhi was the butt of India’s political jokes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) machine weaponized ridicule against him, branding him a privileged dynast, mocking him as a “reluctant prince,” and ensuring his missteps circulated endlessly as memes and WhatsApp forwards. He was cast as a lightweight, an unserious dilettante incapable of countering Narendra Modi’s charisma or the BJP’s disciplined juggernaut. For years, this caricature stuck, not only weakening his personal stature but also deepening the sense that the Congress Party had no viable leadership for the future.
Yet, in the span of the last several years, Rahul Gandhi has undergone a political metamorphosis. He is no longer the hesitant heir, but a politician who seems willing to absorb punishment, embrace vulnerability, and walk into the heart of India to discover its pulse. The Bharat Jodo Yatra marked a turning point — not merely in optics but in substance. It was a long, arduous journey that reintroduced him to ordinary people and reintroduced ordinary people to a leader willing to listen. His spee…

uRahul Gandhi’s ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ has come under controversy after abusive language targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother was used during one of the rallies. In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded an apology from the Leader of the Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.
Although the leaders were not on stage when the incident occurred, the video has gone viral. The incident took place in Darbhanga, and the video shows derogatory language being used on stage, with posters of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav in the background.
Workers in the video were also heard chanting the name of Naushad, a local Congress leader aspiring for a ticket in this year’s elections. However, Naushad, in a telephonic interview with India Today, said he had already left 15–20 minutes earlier with Rahul Gandhi for a rally in Muzaffarpur. He also apologised for the incident that occurred during the rally.
He said, "I have contested elections twice from Delhi. For 20 years, I have been a party worker. We cannot do such a thing. Still, I apologise. Since we org…

Rahul Gandhi's Kota rally row: Posters, permissions and politics overshadow youth concerns

Jaipur, June 17 : A day before Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's high-stakes 'Chhatron Ki Goonj' rally in Kota, a fresh political battle has erupted in Rajasthan, with the Congress accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of removing posters, intimidating stakeholders, and attempting to undermine the Opposition leader's outreach to students.
The confrontation comes as Rahul Gandhi prepares to spotlight issues such as paper leaks, recruitment exam irregularities and unemployment from Kota, India's coaching capital and a city symbolic of the aspirations and frustrations of millions of students.

40-50 years of power through vote theft: Rahul Gandhi targets BJP
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, 26 August, launched a sharp attack on the NDA government and the Election Commission (EC) over the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, urging citizens to safeguard their right to vote as a way of protecting the Constitution.
Addressing a rally in Madhubani during the Congress’ Voter Adhikar Yatra, Gandhi alleged that the BJP, with the help of the EC, was indulging in “vote chori” (vote theft). “The SIR in Bihar has exposed the BJP and the Election Commission, which is why people have started calling BJP leaders ‘vote chor’,” he claimed.
The leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the EC had deleted the names of 65 lakh voters in Bihar, and alleged that an equal number would now be added to benefit the BJP. “Amit Shah once said the BJP would remain in power for 40–50 years. Now I understand why — because they are stealing votes, starting from Gujarat itself,” he remarked.
Rahul Gandhi asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home minister Amit Shah have remained silent on his charges of electoral manipulation. “BJP leaders ar…

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday, called on students and young people across the country to unite and participate in the "Echo of Students" mega rally in Kota on June 17, saying that the future of the youth would determine the future of the nation.
He alleged that paper leaks, exam mismanagement, cancelled recruitments, rising fees, privatisation and scams were shattering the dreams of millions of young Indians. He also accused the Central government of failing to fulfil its responsibility towards the country's youth.

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday stepped up his attack on the Modi government over alleged irregularities in last week's UGC-NET examination, accusing the Centre of repeatedly failing students by turning a blind eye to examination "scams" and refusing to fix what he described as a broken recruitment and education system.
The Rae Bareli Congress MP alleged that despite the recent controversy over the NEET-UG paper leak, the government had failed to act, emboldening those behind such rackets while leaving lakhs of aspirants to bear the consequences.
Sharing a Hindi media report on X, Gandhi claimed fresh allegations surrounding the June 2026 UGC-NET examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) pointed to yet another major breach in the examination process.
According to Gandhi, a 100-page PDF linked to the question paper-setting process was circulated shortly before the examination. He alleged that the document, access to which should have been restricted to the NTA, contained nearly 90 questions that later appeared in the Sociology paper.
