Lebanon
, more than 800,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and towns due to relentless Israeli
bombings
and blanket evacuation orders that are not sparing anyone.
These mass displacements are deepening people’s vulnerabilities, including those of people who have not been able to return home since previous displacements. Ghina, a young person who fled from Odaisseh on Lebanon’s southern border, is one of the thousands who remain internally displaced since 2023. She now lives with her family in a shelter, known as the Montana shelter by its residents, in a town called Marwaniyeh located near Saida, Lebanon’s third-largest city.
“We were among the first people who forcibly evacuated our villages [in 2023],” says Ghina, standing outside the shelter. “I have been living in this shelter for almost three years. I lived with my family of five in one room, now an influx of people arrived, and, in some rooms, th…

‘We won’t leave children in the cold’: Lebanese monastery opens doors to displaced
More than a million people have been displaced by Israeli airstrikes and evacuation orders across Lebanon, with many of them left living in tents or on roadsides. But amid the horrors of war there are also touching acts of solidarity. Our reporters Elena Volochine and Antonia Kerrigan spent a day in a monastery which has opened its doors to the displaced from across the south of the country.

Beirut, Lebanon, March 4, 2026 —In the wake of military escalations across much of the Middle East, hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel escalated dramatically on March 1st, forcing tens of thousands of people in Lebanon to flee their homes. This outbreak of violence marks the most serious deterioration in security conditions since the November 2024 ceasefire agreement, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian crisis and placing enormous strain on families, communities and aid services.
As of March 1st, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health, at least 50 people have been killed and more than 400 injured by airstrikes that have targeted southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, and the Beirut-Mount Lebanon region. The violence has triggered widespread panic, with families leaving their homes in search of safety, often with little warning and few belongings. Since then, evacuation orders have been issued for over 100 villages across southern Lebanon and parts of the Bekaa Valley, prompting additional large-scale displacement.
A staff member with the International Rescue Committee (IRC), describe…

The UN’s top humanitarian official warned theSecurity Councilon Tuesday that Lebanon is facing one of its most dangerous moments in years, with escalating violence, mass displacement and deepening human suffering pushing the country to “breaking point”.
Briefing ambassadors from Beirut, Emergency Relief CoordinatorTom Fletchersaid he arrived to find “anxiety and tensions at levels I have not witnessed in many years”, as airstrikes and drone activity continue to shake the capital and surrounding areas.
“The situation on both sides of the Blue Line demands not only the Council’s closest attention, but alsoyour collective action to avert an even worse crisis,”he stressed, describing the discussion as “urgent”.
Mr. Fletcher said the humanitarian toll has worsened sharply. “Over the past four weeks, more than 1,240 people have been killed… and another 3,500 injured,” he said, noting that women, children and first responders are among the dead.
More than 1.1 million people were displaced in that time, including hundreds of thousands of children. “A cycle of coercive displacement is …

The Lebanese Crisis and Its Impact on Immigrants and Refugees
Residents in Lebanon — citizens and foreigners — faced a perilous journey to evacuate the war-torn country and reach safe havens in Syria and Cyprus this summer. Before the ceasefire went into effect on August 14, up to 10,000 people arrived at the Syrian border each day, according to a report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in early August.
Other people arriving at the Syrian border included tourists from the Gulf region who were required to pay to enter Syria, as well as a number of poor Palestinian refugees who were rejected.
About 15,000 American citizens (many of Lebanese origin) were evacuated, as were thousands of Europeans and Australians.
Runways at Beirut's main airport, major bridges, and roads were destroyed by the Israeli military in the fight against Hezbollah that began July 12. In major southern cities like Tyre, infrastructure was so badly damaged that people often were trapped without access to food, water, electricity, or medical care.
At press time, Lebanon’s total losses amount to an estimated $9.4 billion, according to Lebanon’s Higher Relief Commission. In cooper…

Lebanon: Mass Displacement as Bombardment Intensifies
Since Monday, 2 March,
tens of thousands of people in Lebanon have
fled their homes
following relentless Israeli airstrikes across multiple areas.
Israel’s intensified airstrikes across Beirut’s southern suburbs and southern Lebanon are causing deaths, injuries, and widespread displacement. This escalation comes after 15 months of a so-called ceasefire that never translated into real safety for civilians. Israeli attacks and incursions have continued throughout—and are now sharply escalating again. Blanket forced displacement orders, alongside ongoing strikes and incursions, are forcing families to flee repeatedly, often with nowhere safe to go. Many are left stranded in the streets or trapped in their towns.
In response, MSF has launched a nationwide emergency operation. Our teams are on the ground providing care through mobile clinics, distributing essential relief items, and supporting hospitals, shelters, and primary health care services.
