The landslides occurred on Sunday night and affected several areas of the camps, Bangladesh’s Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, Mizanur Rahman, told EFE. The fatalities were reported in at least three locations in Cox’s Bazar, divided into 33 highly congested refugee camps, where about 1.1 million people live, according to UNHCR. Rahman said that most of the victims were new arrivals who built shelters on the hillsides as they could not find space elsewhere in the camps. He added that the authorities were trying to relocate them away from vulnerable areas but were unable to do so in the last two days due to persistent rainfall. According to the official, among the victims are four members of the same family, who had dug into a hillside to build their shelter.
