The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has dismissed allegations of internal divisions following claims of rival camps within the party’s northern region structures.
Second Deputy Secretary General Uchizi Mkandawire has said there are no factions in the party, insisting all structures remain intact and operational.
“There are no rival camps in MCP. We are united and working as one team. A few individuals trying to play politics outside party lines does not mean there is a division,” said Mkandawire.
The remarks come after MCP member Winfred Mphande alleged that the party had split into two informal groups—one backing First Deputy Speaker Catherine Gotani-Hara and another supporting Vitumbiko Mumba, who recently resigned from the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
Mumba resigned in June, citing frustration with the composition of the NEC.
He accused the party of sidelining elected members, stating that more than 80 percent of those in the NEC had not been elected at convention and had not even paid nomination fees.

Member of Parliament and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) running mate in the 2025 presidential election, Vitumbiko Mumba, has demanded the resignation of senior Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) figure George Chaponda, saying President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika should dismiss him if he refuses to step down over remarks perceived as targeting people from Mzimba District.

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday, Mumba said Chaponda’s comments had exposed a dangerous mindset that has no place in a democratic and united Malawi.
The outspoken lawmaker argued that the controversy surrounding Chaponda’s remarks is not merely about politics, but about the kind of nation Malawians want to build.
“Given the reckless statement made from a position of great ignorance, I doubt that he can exercise his constitutional duties impartially. As such, the best course of action would be for him to resign, or for the appointing authority to dismiss him,” Mumba said.
He warned that failure to take action against Chaponda would only reinforce public perceptions that the remarks reflect views tolerated or share…

President Lazarus Chakwera yesterday unveiled Minister of Trade and Industry Vitumbiko Mumba as his running mate in the September 16 General Election, breaking his tradition of picking the party’s first vice-president.
Explaining his decision after presenting nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), the President said he selected Mumba—who earlier resigned from MCP national executive committee (NEC) citing non-acceptance by some NEC members—because of his appeal to the youth and his potential to drive
public sector reforms.
During his maiden presidential bid in 2014, Chakwera picked then MCP first deputy president Richard Msowoya as running mate while in the court-annulled 2019 election he settled for first deputy president the late Mohammed Sidik Mia. Both were unveiled more than a month before submission of nomination papers.
On the other hand, in the court-sanctioned fresh presidential election in June 2020 Chakwera partnered UTM Party leader and the country’s Vice-President at the time Saulos Chilima under the Tonse Allia…

A explosive faction within the Malawi Congress Party has just dropped a political bombshell, openly declaring war on their own leader! Calling themselves the MCP Revolution for Change of Leadership, a group of angry members is demanding that President Lazarus Chakwera immediately step down from the party helm.
In a scathing press conference in Lilongwe, the rebel leader Samson Chaziya didn’t hold back, blasting Chakwera for disastrous leadership that he claims kicked the party out of government. He insists that if the MCP wants any hope of winning in 2030, they need to hold a convention now and elect a new captain!
Chaziya calling for Chakwera to Step down
But the drama doesn’t stop there. Chaziya revealed a jaw-dropping secret: the group has been trying to confront Chakwera face-to-face for YEARS! He claims they warned the President back in 2021 ab…

Vitumbiko Mumba has demanded the resignation of senior DPP official George Chaponda over divisive regional remarks. The ethnic stakes ahead of Malawi’s elections are staggering.
The political temperature in Malawi has spiked dramatically as Vitumbiko Mumba, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) running mate for the highly anticipated 2025 presidential election, issued a forceful ultimatum demanding the immediate resignation of senior Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) figure George Chaponda. Mumba declared that if Chaponda refuses to step down voluntarily, former President Peter Mutharika must ruthlessly purge him from the party ranks over deeply divisive remarks aimed at the communities of Mzimba District.
The controversy centers on public statements that have been widely condemned as ethnically polarizing and fundamentally destructive to national unity. As the nation braces for a brutal electoral cycle, Mumba’s aggressive pushback signals that the MCP intends to establish a zero-tolerance policy for rhetoric that attempts to marginalize specific regional voting blocs. The ensuing political fallout threatens to sever…

Kaliati Exposes DPP's Plan for Mutharika's Resignation
Africa-Press – Malawi.
Malawi’s political arena has been jolted by explosive allegations from UTM Secretary General Patricia Kaliati, who claims Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Peter Mutharika is secretly plotting to step down just a month after the September elections—paving the way for his running mate, former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah, to assume the presidency.
According to Kaliati, this cloak-and-dagger succession plan sheds light on why the DPP flatly rejected UTM’s request for the running mate position during alliance negotiations. Installing Ansah—whose tenure at MEC remains deeply controversial over the annulled 2019 elections—would allow the party to “keep the presidency in the family,” she alleged.
But the intrigue doesn’t end there. Insiders allege that Mutharika has already promised veteran party strongman George Chaponda the Vice-Presidency under an Ansah administration, with both figures allegedly earmarked for a Saturday, 1 November 2025 swearing-in. Chaponda, long dogged by the infamous “maiz…

Malawi started voting on Tuesday in an election pitting President Lazarus Chakwera against his predecessor Peter Mutharika, with sky-high inflation and food prices at the top of voters’ minds.
Another 15 candidates, including former president Joyce Banda, are also contesting the presidency, but analysts expect a two-horse race between Chakwera, 70, and Mutharika, 85. If no one secures over 50% of the vote, there will be a second round.
“I have voted for the candidate that I am confident will solve the hunger problem. I am struggling to feed my children,” said Alindiine Bellison Kazembe, a 32-year-old mother of four working as a maid in the commercial capital, Blantyre, who was among the early voters lined up on Tuesday morning.
CYCLONE AND DROUGHT HAVE ADDED TO HARDSHIP
Malawi has faced economic stagnation since former pastor Chakwera was elected in 2020, with a devastating cyclone and a regional drought wiping out crops and worsening hardship. Inflation has b…

In a bold show of confidence and political momentum, senior Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) official George Chaponda has declared the recent IPOR survey results as undeniable proof that Malawians are ready to return Peter Mutharika to power.
Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at Mombo Primary School in Mulanje after submitting his nomination papers for the upcoming parliamentary race, Chaponda said the survey results mirror the growing frustrations of citizens and signal a looming political shift.
“The IPOR findings are not surprising at all,” Chaponda said. “They simply cement what Malawians already know—that Peter Mutharika remains the most trusted and preferred leader. The people have suffered enough under this administration.”

Mumba demands full audit of votes in the affected districts
President Lazarus Chakwera’s running mate for the September 16, 2025 general elections Vitumbiko Mumba has alleged that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has uncovered a scheme where some electoral officials are deliberately tampering with figures in 13 districts including Mangochi, Thyolo and Rumphi.
Speaking on Friday night at a press briefing held at party headquarters in Lilongwe, Mumba said the party has since requested the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to conduct full audit of votes in the affected districts.
“Fellow Malawians such enemies cannot be left unnoticed, un confronted, and unexposed” he said while assuring MCP supporters to remain calm as their vote is secure.
Meanwhile, MEC chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimaja has denied receiving the complaint from the party and has since advised those with complaints to use official communication channels regarding the results being announced by MEC.
