Connecticut | Car Ends Up Waveny Park Swimming Pool - News 12 Justin DeVellis • Jun 16, 2026, 9:41 PM • Updated A group of New Canaan lifeguards are being hailed as heroes after helping first responders rescue a man who inadvertently drove his car into the public pool at Waveny Park. Town officials say the driver was trying to park his vehicle on Tuesday morning around 10:30 a.m. but accelerated instead. The car then traveled between a set of trees, through a fence, and into the pool. "My coworkers and I were setting up the food court umbrellas, and all of a sudden we hear this loud crash," lifeguard Mike D'Urso says. "We turned around, and there's just a Tesla sitting in the middle of our pool." The pool was closed at the time, town officials say. D'Urso was one of the first lifeguards to spring into action. "I stayed pretty calm because the guy was breathing and he was conscious," D'Urso says. "My main concern was that the water level would rise above his head, so we had to get him out before that happened." A driver was rescued from a vehicle after he crashed into a closed public pool in New Canaan on Tuesday. The New Canaan Police Department , Fire Department and EMS responded to the Steve Benko Pool at Waveny Park around 10:38 a.m. on Tuesday for a reported vehicle that drove into the pool, according to the police. Arriving officers and multiple lifeguards entered the pool to assist the male driver out of the vehicle. Police said he was the only occupant in the vehicle. The driver said he was not injured but was transported to an area hospital by New Canaan EMS for an evaluation, according to police. Police said there were no injuries as a result of the incident. The pool was closed at the time, and no one was in the pool. A preliminary investigation determined that the driver was allegedly attempting to park the car when it accelerated and went through a fence and into the pool, according to police.
