Torrey, N.Y. — A fatal crash in Yates County is under investigation on Friday.
Yates County Sheriff's deputies responded to State Route 54 in Torrey just before 11:40 a.m. for a report of a crash.
An investigation determined that a 1999 White Sterling dump truck was traveling eastbound on State Route 54 when the unloaded dump truck braked abruptly to avoid hitting a car that was on State Route 14, which was attempting to make a left turn onto State Route 54.
The operator of the car avoided a collision with the dump truck, but the dump truck was unable to maintain its lane and crossed into the westbound lane and struck a 2015 gray Chevrolet Silverado, ejecting the dump truck driver from the truck, according to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.
The 59-year-old operator of the Chevy Silverado, was pronounced dead on the scene.
The dump truck driver was transported to Geneva General Hospital and later flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital, according to deputies.
The other driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Pitcairn man arrested in Parkway East DUI crash that killed his passenger
A Pitcairn man already facing sentencing in two drunken-driving cases was arrested Monday in connection with what police say was a third DUI incident, this one fatal.
Jordan Bowyer was driving an Infiniti sedan up to 87 miles per hour on the Parkway East in 2024 when he crashed the car, killing his front-seat passenger, authorities said.
Pennsylvania State Police charged Bowyer, 24, on Saturday with felony homicide by vehicle while DUI, homicide by vehicle, two DUI counts and five summonses.
Allegheny County sheriff’s deputies took Bowyer into custody Monday, a spokesman for the office said.
Bowyer previously pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing in two separate DUI cases in Monroeville — one that took place a month before the Sept. 21, 2024 crash on Interstate 376, and a second one two months after it, court records show.
In the case that led to the latest charges, troopers said Bowyer was speeding westbound on the highway — between 80 and 87 miles per hour — around 12:30 a.m.
He lost control of the vehicle around Exit 72B in Oakland, which connects the Parkway East with Interstate 579 and Bouleva…

CHURCHILL COUNTY, Nev. (News 4&Fox 11) —The Nevada Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly three-vehicle crash that shut down westbound I-80 early Wednesday morning near mile marker 88, between Lovelock and the US-95 junction.
Westbound I-80 was closed at Toulon (Exit 93), and drivers are being urged not to take the frontage road because it has several washouts and unsafe travel conditions.
One lane reopened around 1 p.m., after westbound I-80 was completely shut down for more than 12 hours.
The crash happened just before 1 a.m. on Dec. 3, when troopers responded to a crash involving a black SUV and two semi-trucks. According to the preliminary investigation, the SUV was stopped across both westbound lanes of the interstate. A semi-truck hauling a box trailer loaded with pet food struck the SUV, then ran off the right shoulder and overturned, with its trailer landing on its side and blocking both westbound lanes. A second semi-truck, this one pulling a tank trailer full of milk, avoided the SUV but struck the overturned box trailer, severing it and …

According to FHP Lt. Alex Camacho, the crash, which involved 18 vehicles, occurred around 11:25 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway near Ives Dairy Road.
Camacho said a tractor-trailer was traveling south as traffic was congested and failed to stop for the vehicles ahead.
“As a result, the tractor trailer collided into several vehicles causing a chain reaction of crashes,” Camacho said in an email to Local 10 News.

Emergency crews were called to the 200 block of Clairton Boulevard at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday for a
serious collision involving a box truck and a motorcycle
. Authorities later confirmed that 38-year-old Ryan Davin of South Park died as a result of the crash. Local news photos from the scene showed the motorcycle down on its side and the front of the box truck heavily damaged. The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
When a crash between a motorcycle and a commercial vehicle proves fatal, investigators face the difficult task of piecing together how the collision occurred. That means reviewing both driver actions and the condition of the vehicles involved.
Could Driver Actions Have Contributed?
Box trucks often operate in tight urban and suburban spaces, which require constant attention to traffic signals, blind spots, and turning paths. Investigators will need to look at whether the box truck’s driver maintained proper awareness and had enough time to react to the motorcycle’s position. Similarly, witness statements or video footage may provide extra context.
