The US celebrated its 250th birthday with large events, including a super-sized fireworks display, despite a severe heatwave causing cancellations like the Washington parade.
President Trump used the anniversary for political rallies, highlighting threats from "radicals and extremists" and promoting US exceptionalism amid deep national divisions.
The milestone prompted reflection on America's history and future, with mixed public views on the nation's progress and calls for inclusivity from figures like Pope Leo XIV.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Severe weather disrupted celebrations of America’s 250th anniversary of independence Saturday in several East Coast cities, including Washington, where storms prompted a roughly two-hour evacuation of the National Mall. President Donald Trump said he will still speak there later Saturday night.
Elsewhere, severe weather prompted the cancellation of celebrations in Hartford, Connecticut, along with Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Spectators at Boston’s fireworks and concert were told to briefly seek shelter before events later resumed. An evacuation was also ordered in Philadelphia. New York and Pittsburgh moved forward with fireworks but shifted the time to accommodate the shifting weather.

The US has marked its 250th birthday with fireworks and flyovers – but celebrations across the country were complicated by extreme weather.
“The American dream is back,” US President Donald Trump told a cheering crowd during a delayed rally in Washington’s National Mall, before what he described as the world’s largest firework display.
The 4 July federal holiday commemorates the 13 US colonies signing the Declaration of Independence in 1776 to end British rule.
Despite the celebrations, Trump has been criticised for making himself central to the milestone and politicising the celebrations.
The president’s speech, which wrapped up just before midnight, touched on political themes including the rejection of communism, his backing of the Save America Act and the right to bear arms.
“Long live the cause of independence,” he said. “May it reign forever and ever and ever. We will always be on top, we will never let our country fall, we will always be the best.”
Trump capped off his remarks by calling the moment “o…

US President Donald Trump will head to Washington DC’s National Mall on Saturday for what he has billed as a “spectacular rally” celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
The event, organised by a White House-backed private-public partnership, will include flyovers by hundreds of aircraft and a fireworks display organisers hope will be the biggest of all time.
Military flyovers over Washington DC will happen every hour between 13:15 local time (18:15 BST) and sunset, the organisers said, and Trump’s new Air Force One will feature in one of the formations over the capital.
The president, however, has been accused by opponents of politicising the nation’s anniversary event and several music acts dropped out soon after being announced.
Extremely hot, humid temperatures of approximately 38C (100F) and a later-than-anticipated start time may also have an impact on the size of the crowd that attends.
There is also the potential for evening thunderstorms which could disrupt proceedings.
Speaking at an event in North Dakota earlier this week, Trump promised to make a “really long speech” at the Fourth of July f…

Triple-digit temperatures in Washington, D.C., haven’t stopped members of a white nationalist group from marching through the nation’s capital while carrying U.S. and Confederate flags on the Fourth of July.
Hundreds of members of the neo-fascist group Patriot Front gathered in D.C. chanting “reclaim America” as the country celebrates its 250th anniversary. The city’s Metropolitan Police Department hasn’t reported any arrests.

It was almost as if the last 250 years never happened.
President Donald Trump kicked off celebrations for America’s semi-quincentennial on Wednesday night in a speech which implied that the nation’s greatness at this landmark moment was largely thanks to him.
After military jets ripped through the sky over the National Mall, and the ‘President’s own’ Marine band played patriotic hits, Trump emerged on stage, serenaded by Lee Greenwood, and his campaign anthem “God Bless the USA.”
In a more normal time, a president might have chosen to mark the milestone with a rumination on America’s attempts to honor its founding promise, on its failings, grasps for redemption and of the journey still to come.
But a president who sought to reshape the nation’s story as told by some of its greatest museums, seemed more concerned with his personal place in history.
This seemed especially dis…

President Donald Trump mixed partisan politics with patriotic appeals on Saturday as he commemorated the 250th anniversary of American independence, a moment he declared “one of the most joyous and glorious milestones of all time.”
Speaking in Washington after storms prompted a roughly two-hour evacuation of the National Mall, Trump honored veterans, including several from World War II and one of the first Black officers to lead a Special Forces team in combat in Vietnam. They appeared before flags that symbolized some of the most significant and challenging moments in American history, from the one that was draped over Abraham Lincoln's casket to the one that flew on the plane piloted by the Wright Brothers.
Yet Trump also leaned into partisan territory unusual for an Independence Day address, which presidents typically use as a moment to unify the country. Instead, he stumped again for the SAVE America Act, an elections bill that's encountering challenges even from Trump's fellow Republicans in Congress. He highlighted his support for the Second Amendment and revived denunciations of communism, which are bec…

President Donald Trump will travel to South Dakota to deliver a speech and watch fireworks at Mount Rushmore. And in a novel twist, there will be a ball drop in New York City’s Times Square at midnight to usher in the July Fourth holiday with much the same revelry that is typically reserved for New Year’s Eve.
The sound of fighter jets on military flyovers shook the nation’s capital. In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani delivered his own address on the country’s 250th anniversary that cast America as a nation of contradictions “working each day towards the perfection in which it was conceived.”

Millions celebrate Independence Day as Trump put his stamp on the landmark anniversary
Washington: Millions of Americans celebrated the country's 250th birthday on Saturday -- a landmark celebration that comes at a time of deep political division, with a president determined to put his stamp on the festivities.
Washington's traditional fireworks display on the National Mall -- lined with monuments celebrating the nation's Founding Fathers -- has been super-sized, and is being touted as the biggest ever.
President Donald Trump has added a program of roaring military flyovers -- and an unusual campaign-style political rally -- for July Fourth, which marks the anniversary of the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The national holiday comes in the middle of a brutal heat wave, with some 160 million Americans under extreme weather warnings, wreaking havoc with planned block parties and barbecues in towns and cities across much of the country.
With temperatures in the US capital expected to reach 102F (39C) -- and the heat index soaring to 110-115F, the Independence Day parade in Washington was canceled.

President Donald Trump's plans to commemorate America's 250th anniversary of independence with a rally on the National Mall have been complicated by severe storms that gathered near Washington, forcing event organisers to order an evacuation.
"Freedom 250 will share updates on programming and doors reopening," Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez said in a statement on Saturday that encouraged participants to seek shelter at museums and federal buildings near the National Mall.
Plans for fireworks were still moving forward in other cities including Chicago and New York, where tall ships passed the Statue of Liberty earlier in the day, recalling the fanfare around America's 200th anniversary in 1976.
Organisers of celebrations months in the making had to adjust or cancel activities entirely as much of the East Coast sweltered under heat that approached and in many cases surpassed triple digits.

US President Donald Trump used Saturday’s 250th anniversary celebrations of American independence to deliver a speech that blended patriotic commemoration with overtly political messaging, in a departure from the traditionally unifying tone of Independence Day addresses.
Speaking in Washington after severe weather temporarily disrupted events at the National Mall, Trump described the milestone as “one of the most joyous and glorious milestones of all time,” while honouring veterans from multiple eras of US military history, including Second World War servicemen and a pioneering Black Special Forces officer from the Vietnam War.

US President Donald Trump basked in a celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota on Friday, standing before a memorial to some of the most beloved American presidents.
