Nnamdi Kanu
The long-running legal drama surrounding separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu reached a historic climax this week when a Nigerian appellate court dismissed his final appeal and upheld his life imprisonment sentence, marking one of the most consequential rulings against political extremism in the nation’s modern history.
The verdict, delivered under heavy security in Abuja, seals the fate of a man who rose from obscurity in England to ignite one of the most controversial mass movements in recent Nigerian history, a movement rooted in old grievances, fueled by modern frustrations, and ultimately marred by violence.
To supporters, Kanu was a liberator, but to detractors, he was an opportunist who weaponized legitimate Igbo marginalization. To many others, he was a dangerous provocateur who inflamed a volatile region and pushed Nigeria toward another deadly rupture.
Here we have an Igbo woman denouncing Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB for instigating chaos, tyranny, and violence in southeast Nigeria. To start with there is the disruptive Monday sit-at-home orders that paralyze daily life.People being silent afte…

BREAKING: Abuja Court Jails Ansaru Terror Leader Mahmud Usman 15 Years ...
Abuja, Nigeria– The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced an Ansaru terrorist leader, Mahmud Usman, to 15 years in prison.
Usman was found guilty of engaging in illegal mining of California stones without lawful authority, with proceeds reportedly channeled into the purchase of arms and ammunition for terror activities.
Delivering judgment, Justice Emeka Nwite handed down the 15-year jail term and ordered that Usman be remanded in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
On August 16, 2025, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, announced that security forces had achieved a major breakthrough with the capture of two senior leaders of the Ansaru terrorist group.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Ribadu said the intelligence-driven operation, carried out between May and July, effectively crippled the leadership of the Al-Qaeda-affiliated group and delivered “the most decisive blow against them.”
He explained that the operation was jointly executed by the armed forces, intelligence agencies, and other security partners. According to him, the offensive targeted Ansaru strong…

The
terrorism conviction
and life sentence handed down by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, brings an end to a ten-year legal battle. But it opens up a larger political and security question for Nigeria.
Kanu has long championed the
secession of Nigeria’s south-east region
, a demand the Nigerian constitution forbids. The last major attempt at secession, in 1967, triggered a 30-month
civil war
that killed over one million people, mostly Igbo civilians.
Kanu’s campaign for Biafra as an independent Igbo state is rooted in decades of
perceived political marginalisation
and unresolved historical grievances of the Igbo.
The Igbo are one of Nigeria’s three largest ethnic groups – the other two are the Hausa and the Yoruba. Yet no Igbo person has held the presidency or vice presidency since 1999.
Additionally, Igbos feel marginalised because of the way in which Nigeria has organised its regional political groups. The south-east geopolitical zone tha…

Maiduguri, Nigeria —In a dramatic development that underscores the Nigerian Army’s determination to root out internal sabotage, a military court martial has sentenced three soldiers to life imprisonment after finding them guilty of selling and diverting arms to terrorists in Borno State.
The ruling, delivered after weeks of proceedings, has sent shockwaves through the military establishment and the wider Nigerian public, highlighting the grave dangers posed by insider collusion in the fight against insurgency in the northeast.
According to official sources, the convicted soldiers were found to have engaged in acts of treachery by supplying weapons and ammunition to terrorist groups operating in Borno, the epicenter of the Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgencies. Their actions, prosecutors argued, not only endangered the lives of fellow soldiers but also prolonged Nigeria’s decade-long battle against terrorism.
The court martial, convened in Maiduguri, sat under strict military protocols with senior officers, legal representatives, and observers present. Charges against the sol…

Mr Nwite had sentenced four of the five defendants prosecuted by the SSS to death by hanging.
State Security Service (SSS) lawyer, Ayodeji Adedipe, SAN, has said that the judgement of the court on the four convicts over their involvement in the Owo church attack is a warning to terrorists who engage in heinous crimes.
Mr Adedipe stated this during an interview with journalists shortly after a judgement was delivered by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.
Mr Nwite had sentenced four of the five defendants prosecuted by the SSS to death by hanging following the establishment of their participation in the June 5, 2022, attack on St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
The senior lawyer, who described the judgement as “sound,” said it reflected the facts and the law.
“The judge did a very thorough job. The judgment had lasted for over three hours.
“He examined and evaluated all the pieces of evidence adduced and correctly applied the law,” he said.
According to him, they were not surprised because the investigation that led to the prosecution of the case was not onl…

Nigerian court convicts Biafran separatist Nnamdi Kanu of terrorism. The IPOB leader incited violence, leading to attacks and deaths in southeast Nigeria.
A Nigerian court has delivered a significant verdict, convictingNnamdi Kanu, the prominent leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on terrorism-related charges. The ruling by Judge James Omotosho stated that prosecutors successfully demonstrated Kanu's role in inciting attacks on both security personnel and civilians across Nigeria's southeastern region through his group, IPOB.
Judge Omotosho emphasized Kanu's clear intention to promote violence, declaring, “His intention was quite clear as he believed in violence. These threats of violence were nothing butterrorist acts.” During the trial, Kanu, who is 58 and also holds British citizenship, chose to represent himself after dismissing his legal team. His conduct led to him being ejected from the courtroom for “unruly behaviour,” where he challenged the legality of the charges, stating, “Which law states that you can charge me on an unwritten law? Show me... Any judgment declared in this court is a …
