MEXICO CITY - Luis Diaz shined in his World Cup debut, scoring the tiebreaker in the 65th minute and contributing an assist to lift Colombia to a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in both teams’ World Cup opener on June 17 in Mexico City.
The 29-year-old Bayern Munich star also assisted Daniel Munoz’s sensational 40th-minute volley as Los Cafeteros took the lead in Group K following Portugal’s draw with the Democratic Republic of the Congo earlier on June 17.
Jaminton Campaz sweetened the victory with a third goal from Cucho Hernandez’s cross deep in second-half stoppage time before a fiercely pro-Colombian crowd.
Abbosbek Fayzullaev leveled affairs in the 60th minute on a close-range rebound during Uzbekistan’s World Cup debut. However, Colombia thoroughly deserved the victory, outshooting their opponents 15-9 overall and 4-3 in efforts on target.

MEXICO CITY - It was 12 years ago that Colombia forward James Rodriguez announced himself at the World Cup in Brazil — and though he led his side out for their 2026 opener on Wednesday, it was teammate Luis Diaz who showed he could be the main man this year.
Diaz was the architect of his side’s 3-1 Group K win over tournament debutants Uzbekistan at a raucous Azteca Stadium that was filled to the brim with loud and proud Colombia supporters.
Although 29 years old, it is the first World Cup for Diaz as he made a late breakthrough in his career, at the Portuguese side Porto, and Colombia did not qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
He certainly showed he would make the most of his opportunity over the next few weeks as, not long after hitting the post, he sent a sumptuous ball over…

Colombia’s old guard led them to a 3-1 win against World Cup debutants Uzbekistan, ensuring they did not commit the same mistake as fellow Group K side Portugal in underestimating their opponents.
Towards the end of a first half in which Uzbekistan held firm, the deadlock was broken by a moment of magic from Colombia, with Luis Diaz sending forward a sumptuous pass which Daniel Munoz finished brilliantly with his right boot in the 41st minute.

But the central Asian side did not give up and were rewarded with their first-ever tournament goal in the 60th minute after some bizarre decision-making from goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, whose attempted block of Eldor Shomurodov’s volley was headed home by Abbosbek Fayzullaev.
Unfortunately for Uzbekistan, that moment was followed by a goalkeeping howler of their own at the other end, with Diaz’s shot trickling over the line five minutes later after a fumble from Utkir Yusupov.
And substitute Jaminton Campaz put the gloss on the win for Colo…

Colombia winger Luis Diaz has dazzled at a raucous Azteca Stadium as his side marked their return to the World Cup with a 3-1 Group K win over tournament debutants Uzbekistan on Wednesday.
Colombia, who missed the 2022 tournament in Qatar, struggled in the early stages but broke through in the 41st minute when a brilliant ball lifted into the area by Diaz was hooked in on the turn by Daniel Munoz, who had ghosted in behind the defence.
Uzbekistan equalised on the hour mark after a shot from striker Eldor Shomurodov was spilled by goalkeeper Camilo Vargas and Abbosbek Fayzullaev was on the line to head in.
However, Diaz restored Colombia's lead five minutes later by slotting the ball in from the left of the area.
Substitute Jaminton Campaz headed in a third in stoppage time and Colombia top Group K after Portugal and Democratic Republic of Congo drew 1-1. The South Americans face DR Congo on Tuesday in Guadalajara after Uzbekistan play Portugal in Houston.

Uzbekistan vs. Colombia—World Cup: Live Score and Match Stats
Uzbekistan makes its
World Cup
debut on Wednesday night when it faces Colombia—the first time the pair have ever crossed paths.
Ranked 14th in FIFA’s World Rankings, Colombia finished third in CONMEBOL qualifying, finishing level on points with Uruguay, Brazil, and Paraguay but edging ahead on goal difference. Inevitably, Colombia is favorite and arrives at the tournament in strong form, with recent friendly wins over Costa Rica and Jordan.
Uzbekistan, ranked 50th, secured its place by finishing second behind Iran in its AFC qualifying group. Since then, it has produced mixed results in friendlies, suffering defeats to the Netherlands, Canada and Uruguay, but also picking up wins over Kuwait and Egypt to show it can compete at this level.
That contrast suggests Uzbekistan will need a major performance to trouble one of South America’s strongest sides.
