ATLANTA ―
DR Congo
's 2026 World Cup journey continues after a 3-1 drubbing of
Uzbekistan
.
Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre said pre-game his team was focused on playing a good "technical" game against Uzbekistan after a
1-1 draw versus top-ranked Portugal
and a 1-0 loss to Colombia.
Saturday was anything but that.
It wasn't pretty for most of the match ― Congo had 19 attempts on goal; four were on target ― but it was enough to catapult Congo into the round of 32.
Les Léopards
were powered by Yoane Wissa's brace and a Fiston Mayele goal in the 78th minute.
Uzbekistan's lone goal from Eldor Shomurodov in the 10th minute was all that it could muster, and when the final whistle sounded, the juxtaposition of
White Wolves
to
Léopards
on their knees on the pitch was gutting.

ATLANTA (AP) — For 52 years, Congo’s standout World Cup memory was a humiliating 9-0 rout at the hands of Yugoslavia in its only other appearance on soccer’s biggest stage.
Not anymore. Not after a new generation of players made history by advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time and set up a clash with England.
“The weight on our shoulders was hard to bear,” said striker Yoane Wissa, whose two goals helped Congo rally to a 3-1 win against Uzbekistan on Saturday night
Fiston Mayele was also on target in a dramatic second-half comeback as Congo joined Cape Verde as another unexpected qualifier for the round of 32.
“We told ourselves we can’t give up,” Mayele said.
Congo has been one of the surprise stories of this World Cup, with few expecting it to emerge from a group that included Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and Colombia. And history was hardly on its side.
Congo’s previous appearance was when it competed as Zaire in 1974 and lost all three games, including the rout by Yugoslavia.

Uzbekistan led throughEldor Shomurodov's first-half strike that looked set to end Congo's hopes.
But Sébastien Desabre's team, which had already pulled off one of the surprise results of the World Cup by holding Cristiano Ronaldo'sPortugalto a 1-1 draw in its opening game, fought back after the break.
Trailing to Shomurodov's lobbed goal in the 10th minute, Congo equalized in the 68th when Wissa was brought down byAbdukodir Khusanovin the box for a penalty.
Wissa picked himself up and sent Uzbekistan goalkeeperAbduvohid Nematovthe wrong way by rolling the ball into the bottom corner to spark a dramatic finale.

4 Takeaways From DR Congo's Win Over Uzbekistan At The World Cup
After going down a goal early, DR Congo rallied past Uzbekistan and booked its spot into the Round of 32 at the World Cup — it's first knockout round appearance in team history.
Yoane Wissa scored two goals to seal the victory and third place in Group K behind Colombia and Portugal, allowing the Leopards to be one of the eight third-place teams to advance to the elimination rounds.
Here are takeaways from the game:
DR Congo wasn't a debut World Cup team — its first appearance was in 1974 when the country was known as Zaire — but this result was longtime in the making for the central African nation.
DR Congo's road to the 2026 World Cup included taking down African heavyweights Cameroon and Nigeria during qualifying and then defeating Jamaica in the intercontinental playoffs in March – all games that toughened this team in win-or-go-home scenarios.
At this World Cup, DR Congo showed early on it would be a tough opponent. A tough 1-1 draw to Portugal and a tight 1-0 loss to Colombia provided the Leopards with a path to the knockout stage. A talented squad – led by Wissa, who scored three of the team's four goals a…
