NATO Bolsters Turkey's Air and Missile Defense with SAMP/T Deployment ...
In a significant move to enhance alliance air and missile defense capabilities, NATO has deployed an Italian-operated SAMP/T (Surface-to-Air Missile Platform/Terrain) battery to the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in Konya, Turkey. This strategic deployment falls under NATO’s Permanent Defense Plan, reinforcing the collective security architecture of the alliance.
The Turkish Ministry of National Defense confirmed the deployment, stating that the SAMP/T system, provided by Italy, aims to strengthen integrated air defense for the region. This latest addition complements recent NATO efforts to bolster Turkey’s protective shield against aerial threats. In recent weeks, the alliance also positioned Patriot PAC-3 missile defense batteries at the Incirlik and Kürecik bases.
With these deployments, Turkey now hosts a formidable array of NATO’s long-range air and missile defense assets. The current configuration includes one Patriot PAC-2 and one Patriot PAC-3 system at Incirlik, a Patriot PAC-3 at Kürecik, and the newly deployed SAMP/T in Konya, totaling four advanced long-range defense batteries. Further supporting Turk…

The 2025–2027 Defense Planning Document confirms Italy’s ambitious modernization, introducing new acquisitions while consolidating major programs.
The Italian Ministry of Defense has released the 2025–2027 Documento Programmatico Pluriennale (DPP), the annual multi-year planning document that outlines national defense investments and modernization priorities. The new edition details how Italy intends to enhance readiness, upgrade existing fleets, and invest in future technologies across all branches of the Armed Forces, reaching the NATO target of 2% of the GDP.
The DPP builds on the momentum of recent years, reaffirming long-term programs such as the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), Eurofighter Typhoon, the
F-35 Joint Strike Fighter
, and the renovation of the armored forces, while introducing new initiatives.
Among these is the acquisition of six unspecified

(M3A). This is a critical step toward restoring Italy’s long-range anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability lost with the retirement of…

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday welcomed Italy's deployment of its air defence system in Turkey.
The system arrived in the southern Turkish province of Kahramanmaras last week as part of a NATO mission to defend Turkey's southern border with Syria.
Stoltenberg said Turkey's security is important for NATO.
And by being a key ally, the block had already taken on several measures to improve Turkey's security.
"We have different kinds of assurance measures in Turkey," Stoltenberg said during a press briefing before NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels.
"AWACS surveillance planes, we have Spanish Patriot batteries and have more naval presence in eastern Mediterranean. And the Italian deployment of SAMP/T will add and augment these efforts and this is something I welcome very much. It shows the NATO solidarity."
The move came after the United States and Germany pulled back their Patriot Air and Missile Defence Systems late last year and early this year.
NATO's first deployment of the Patriot System took place in early 2013 after Turkey officially asked the block for help to protect its borders from t…

Italy will deploy a SAMP/T air defense system to Türkiye’s 3rd Main Jet Base Command in the central Anatolian city of Konya, Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense announced, a move framed as part of NATO’s standing defense plan to reinforce the alliance’s air defenses. The deployment arrives as the Franco-Italian system attracts mounting international interest from countries seeking alternatives to the U.S.-made Patriot missile system.
“Within the scope of NATO’s Permanent Defense Plan, an Italian SAMP/T Air Defense System will be deployed at the 3rd Main Jet Base Command/Konya for the purpose of strengthening alliance air defense,” the ministry said in a statement.
The deployment adds to a growing NATO air defense footprint in Türkiye. Patriot batteries are already positioned at the Malatya and Incirlik installations, and domestically developed SIPER batteries have also been deployed at select locations.

Italy to Deploy Air Defense System in Central Turkey
Italy will deploy an air defense system in central Turkey as part of NATO’s defense plan, the Turkish defense ministry said on Tuesday.
“Within the scope of NATO’s standing defense plan, and with the aim of strengthening the alliance’s air defense, one SAMP-T air defense system belonging to Italy will be deployed at the 3rd Main Jet Base Command in Konya,” the ministry said in a statement.
SAMP-T is a mobile surface-to- air missile system developed as a joint Franco-Italian project.
The system can be used against fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, and certain ballistic missile threats.
NATO forces based in Turkey have shot down ballistic missiles fired from Iran four times since the Middle East war broke out in February, prompting the alliance to deploy a new Patriot missile battery at Incirlik air base in southern Turkey.
NATO chief
Mark Rutte
said on a visit to Ankara in April that the alliance would do “what’s necessary to defend” its members including Turkey.
Turkey is due to host a NATO summit on July 7-8.

Italy announces deployment of air defense systems to Gulf states
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
Rome, March 5 (SANA)
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Italy will deploy air defense systems to Gulf states in response to ongoing Iranian attacks targeting several countries in the region.
Meloni said the decision aligns Italy with similar measures taken by the United Kingdom, France and Germany, emphasizing that the deployment is strictly defensive.
She said the move aims to protect tens of thousands of Italian citizens living in the Gulf, along with about 2,000 Italian troops deployed in the region, and stressed the strategic importance of the Gulf for global energy supplies and Italy’s national interests.
Meloni added that the United States is permitted to use its military bases in Italy only for operations that do not involve airstrikes, and that any change to this authorization would require government and likely parliamentary approval.
The announcement comes amid ongoing Iranian strikes across the region following
U.S.–Israeli military operations
, raising security concerns for several Arab states. Earlier Thursday, Australia confirmed the deployment of additional…
