Switzerland took a giant leap towards qualifying for the World Cup knockout stages with an emphatic 4-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in Los Angeles.
What had been an otherwise uneventful encounter for the first 73 minutes came to life when 20-year-old Johan Manzambi crashed in a volley just 166 seconds after his introduction, before Tarik Muharemovic was shown a straight red for catching Breel Embolo on the heel as the last man.
Embolo then teed up another sub, Ruben Vargas, to hit a first-time shot past Nikola Vasilj to make it 2-0 and it was three with 90 minutes on the clock when Freiburg midfielder Manzambi coolly side-footed in his second.
There was still more action to come, though.
On just his third appearance for his country, Ermin Mahmic reduced the deficit when he beat Switzerland goalkeeper G…

Switzerland moved to the top of Group B after securing an impressive 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in their second match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at SoFi Stadium.
The two sides went into the break level after a tightly contested first half that failed to produce a goal despite several promising opportunities.
The Swiss returned with renewed intensity after the restart and finally broke the deadlock in the 74th minute through substitute Yohan Manzambi, who scored just two minutes after entering the pitch.
Manzambi continued to torment the Bosnian defence and doubled his tally in the 90th minute to put the result beyond doubt.
Ruben Vargas also got on the scoresheet as Switzerland took full control of the contest, while Bosnia’s task became even more difficult after Tahir Muharemovic was shown a red card for a last-man foul on Breel Embolo.
The Dragons managed to pull one back through Ermin Memic, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished when captain Gra…

Substitute Johan Manzambi scored twice as Switzerland finally broke Bosnia and Herzegovina's resistance, netting four late goals in a dominant 4-1 victory to move closer to the World Cup knockout stage.
Switzerland found the keys to break down a resolute Bosnia and Herzegovina defence with four late goals in a 4-1 win thanks to a brace from Johan Manzambi and further strikes from fellow substitute Ruben Vargas and captain Granit Xhaka with a penalty.
Bosnia, who had repelled all of Switzerland's attacks until the 74th minute in the Group B clash, finally cracked and allowed 20-year-old Manzambi to net the first of his two goals just three minutes after he entered the pitch.
Moments later a red card for Bosnia's Tarik Muharemovic made the team's situation desperate and the Swiss took full advantage with three more goals in the last minutes of the match, including Xhaka's spot kick at the death.

Switzerland have beaten Algeria in the World Cup round of 32 at BC Place, booking their spot in the last 16.
The Swiss led at half-time after Johan Manzambi’s brilliant run teed up Breel Embolo for a close-range finish inside the opening 10 minutes.
Dan Ndoye then doubled the advantage barely 50 seconds into the second half, after which Algeria struggled to get themselves back into the game and always seemed second best after a bright start.
Switzerland will now face either Colombia or Ghana in the round of 16. Those two sides play tomorrow.

And so the Fennecs go home, undone by the flaw that shadowed them all tournament: their soft defence.
They have now conceded two or more goals in six of their last eight World Cup matches — a leaky streak that no amount of pretty possession could paper over.
So much of the ball, so little to show for it — and still no first knockout win at a World Cup. The old defensive questions roll on to another cycle.
