Austria have beaten World Cup debutants Jordan 3-1, after an absorbing Group J clash in Santa Clara.
Romano Schmid curled home a beautiful effort in the 20th minute to give Austria the lead, before Ali Olwan’s own sensational finish five minutes after half-time brought Jordan level with a deserved and first World Cup goal.
Half-time substitute Marko Arnautovic had a goal ruled out for handball in the build-up, moments before another corner saw Yazan Al-Arab divert the ball into his own net with 14 minutes remaining. Arnautovic, 37, then sealed the win from the penalty spot.
Austria joined Argentina in earning an opening Group J win, after the defending champions beat Algeria 3-0 earlier in the day thanks to an historic Lionel Messi hat-trick.

Austria won their first World Cup game in 36 years with a 3-1 Group J victory over tournament debutants Jordan in San Francisco.
Ralf Rangnick's side needed a late own goal and a Marko Arnautovic stoppage-time penalty to see off a Jordan side who were nerveless on their tournament bow.
The Asian team nearly took a 90-second lead as captain Ehsan Haddad hit a volley into the side netting, but their positive start was punctured when Romano Schmid bent in a wonderful 21st-minute opener - Austria's only first-half shot on target.
But Jordan were not deterred by Schmid's stunner as Ali Olwan hit the bar just 113 seconds later with a glancing header.
The debutants deservedly levelled early in the second half as Olwan produced a fine curling equaliser in off the …

Austria have won a match at the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time since 1990 as they beat debutants Jordan 3-1 in San Francisco.
The European side took the lead with a stunning 21st-minute strike from Romano Schmid but Jordan equalised five minutes into the second half thanks to a curled effort from Ali Olwan.
Former Stoke and West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic thought he had restored Austria's lead when he finished a loose ball after Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila had failed to deal with a corner.
However, following an intervention from the video assistant referee, the goal was disallowed as television replays showed the ball had hit the arm of Stefan Posch.
It did not matter as Austria, managed by former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick, went back in front in the 76th minute as Yazan Al Arab flicked the ball into his own net after a corner.
Arnautovic then sealed the win when he converted a penalty in the 12th minute of injury time after Saleem Obaid handled the ball.
