National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday painted a grim picture of Nigeria’s human rights situation, revealing that 268,787 complaints were recorded across the country in May 2026 amid escalating killings, kidnappings, attacks on schools and places of worship, and growing insecurity.
Presenting the commission’s May Human Rights Situation Dashboard in Abuja, Executive Secretary of NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, described the month as one of the most devastating periods for human rights in recent times, warning that the country is witnessing a humanitarian crisis requiring urgent national attention.
According to the dashboard, no fewer than 390 persons were killed, while 202 others were kidnapped during the month under review, with children, worshippers, security personnel, and rural communities among the worst affected.
Ojukwu said the scale of violations recorded within just 31 days underscored the fragile state of human rights protection in the country.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has described May 2026 as a “devastating month” for human rights in Nigeria, following a surge in killings, abductions, attacks on schools and worship centres, and alleged violations involving state actors.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, disclosed this on Tuesday during the presentation of the Commission’s May 2026 Human Rights Situation Dashboard in Abuja.
According to him, the NHRC received a total of 268,787 complaints during the month under review, with violations involving state actors remaining the most significant concern.

Nigeria’s human rights situation deteriorated sharply in May as the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) received a staggering 268,787 reports of rights violations across the country, with rising insecurity, attacks on schools, places of worship and civilian communities emerging as major concerns.
The executive secretary of the NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, disclosed this yesterday in Abuja during the presentation of the Commission’s May Human Rights Dashboard Observatory, describing the month as “devastating” for human rights in Nigeria.
According to Ojukwu, incidents recorded during the period exposed deep challenges to the protection of fundamental rights, including the rights to life, liberty, education, dignity and freedom of religion.

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Anthony Ojukwu (SAN), on Friday, said a total of 55,218 human rights violation complaints were received by the Commission in May alone.
According to him, 3,149 of the complaints had to do with violations of child’s rights, child abduction, harmful traditional practices, child marriage, violent assault, torture, child abandonment, rape and defilement of minors among others.
Ojukwu, who stated these while delivering his speech at the presentation of the May edition of the Monthly Human Rights Dashboard in Abuja, said the commission recorded 18 cases of rape and defilement of minors of which 12 were children below the age of ten in May alone.
He lamented the huge upsurge in human rights violations and complaints.
