Non-Communicable Diseases in Africa: A Hidden Crisis
Non-Communicable Diseases in Africa: A Hidden Crisis Nov 2, 2023 Nov 2, 2023 Africa, often considered exotic and mystifying by the rest of the world, has long grappled with numerous health challenges. While infectious diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis have traditionally dominated the global health agenda in Africa, there is a growing concern that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are being overlooked. This blog explores the potential link between Africa’s exotic perception and the lack of attention given to NCDs, and why it is imperative to shift the focus toward tackling this emerging crisis Africa’s diversity, vibrant cultures, and breathtaking landscapes have captivated the imagination of people worldwide. However, this perception of Africa as an exotic and distant land has inadvertently contributed to a skewed understanding of the continent’s health challenges. When it comes to Africa, many still associate it primarily with infectious diseases, overlooking the rapid rise of NCDs. Africa is experiencing a dramatic increase in the prevalence of NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and respiratory disorders. According to the World Healt…

Non-communicable diseases in the WHO African region: analysis ... - Nature Download PDF Abstract Historically overshadowed by communicable diseases, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has surged over the past two decades, posing a significant threat to public health, and necessitating urgent attention. This study examines the mortality burden from four major groups/categories of NCDs including cancers, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) and diabetes, prevalence of four NCD associated risk factors including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and overweight, availability of NCD essential medicines and progress indicators of the NCD response in the WHO African region. The data used in this study were obtained from the WHO NCD data portal, Global Health Observatory, and Global Health Estimates, covering the most recent available data for each indicator, ranging from 2000 to 2019 to assess how trends in NCD mortality burden have evolved, as well as the current status of the four main risk factors, availability of essential medicines, and key NCD response indicators. The analysis focused on descriptive statistics for globally…

Africa Only Has Partial Visibility of its True NCD Burden, Says WHO ... Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are often described as Africa's "silent epidemic," but much of that silence reflects how little of the true burden is actually visible. The burden of NCDs now accounts for a growing share of deaths across Africa, driven by rising risk factors such as unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and air pollution. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that NCDs are among the biggest development challenges facing the continent, with the number of deaths steadily rising and health systems under increasing strain. This is compounded by systemic weaknesses, including fragile supply chains and persistent health worker shortages. Initiatives such as PEN-Plus have trained thousands of mid-level providers in 20 countries to manage severe NCDs at district level, but retention remains a major challenge, with nearly half of Africa's health workers reportedly considering migration. As global health leaders prepare for ICPPA 2026, attention is turning to what will follow the conference, and whether commitments will translate into funded, staffed and stoc…

Beyond the well-known conditions, a range of less-discussed NCDs are taking a heavy toll, demanding attention and tailored solutions. “The NCD story and landscape is not only about mortality and death,” Katie Dain, CEO of the NCD Alliance, emphasized at the forum. “It’s also about the morbidity that people living with NCDs are facing.” In Africa, this morbidity extends beyond the usual suspects.
